Hellbent to Return
The hellbender is a giant, aquatic salamander native to much of the eastern and central US-but it is in deep trouble. Populations across their range have plummeted, but a parntership in southern Indiana has made impressive strides in restoring these amazing giants.
Written, filmed, and edited by Zach Truelock. Animation by John Buffington, and editing assistance provided by Andrew Hoffman.
Thanks to Nick Burgmeier, Shelby Royal, and Dr. Rod Williams for their assistance and dedication to saving this endangered species. Check out ag.purdue.edu/department/extension/hellbender/index.html for more info on this project, and ways you can help.

Is the Streamside Salamander a Valid Species?

The highly localized streamside salamander is nearly identical to its more broadly distributed relative, the small-mouthed salamander. How can we be certain they are different and what is a "species"? A special thanks to researchers at the Jezcova lab of Miami University for their assistance and valuable contributions to this video! This is not the 'Daddy Long Leg" that are the venomous ones, they are talking about the Cellar Spider which is venomous and is also called Daddy Long Leg but can't bite because its fangs are too short.

Just like many people, I have a fear of snakes. Nonetheless, I live in a fairly rural area (unbelievably, only one hour from New York City!), and we get all kinds of wildlife here: bears, foxes, turtles, turkeys, deer, mice, and snakes. I see a lot of garter snakes during the warm seasons but, although they give me the frights, I know they’re very good for the environment. So I just tell them, “You go your way, and I’ll go mine!” My dogs are very curious when they find them, but they instinctively know to stay away. I filmed this recent encounter with one of my dogs th-cam.com/users/shortsMDKXtI_AEsI?si=WPxIczhxl0oq41yJ

Growing up in Tulsa, we always called them "eyed elaters." I don't really know where the name came from, except perhaps "elateridae" being the family name for click beetles. They were unique, as most of the click beetles in Oklahoma were less than an inch long, and then there was this Jurassic beast, many times larger. It was always a joy to find one.

Born and raised in San Diego (Oak Park) I literally just came in the house from taking my dog out in the backyard and searched this vid because they're everywhere right now 😂 I grew up catching them and I can tell you they're completely harmless lol if you observe them long enough you'll likely see them repeatedly crashing into your house, flipping over onto their back, and needed your assistance to fly again 😅

Great video! I first saw a dark fishing spider on the outside of our house a few months after moving in. It was HUGE! The biggest spider I’d ever seen. In a panic I asked my husband to get rid of it. He used a broom to knock it down and it made an audible thud then swept it off the deck. After that I had to know more about this spider. Now I actually search for them on the house some nights just to see how many are out and take pictures of really big ones. If some get into the house I catch and release. Learning about these spiders has definitely helped my fear of spiders in general.
