Duplex Reno | Part 4 - Unit 2 Egress Window & Plumbing
In this video series I share my latest project; converting a house into a duplex. The upstairs (unit 1) was renovated with a new kitchen, foyer and bathroom. All other rooms were re-painted, had their hardwood floors refinished and received new trim. The downstairs (unit 2) started with an unfinished basement and required everything from new bathroom plumbing to cutting through the foundation for an egress window. Follow along as I share my progress, mistakes and triumphs!

White Oak Bed Frame Build
มุมมอง 12Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I share how I built a queen sized white oak bed frame. This was one of a couple of these bed frames I have made over the past few months. The dowel joinery has proven to be very strong and the metal hardware makes disassembly and moving this bed frame simple and easy. While not shown, this bed frame has a fifth foot in the middle of the bed (middle of the central support beam). I ...

    Hey Cal....you never said anything about inspections....you went from wiring to drywall....did you get a permit for this? Additionally, where are you located? I would love to have you join my crew in KY!!!! Rather than place s plain 3/4" piece of wood on the threshold, I would have placed on that was equal to the subfloor, and continued my tile over to the wood floor. Suggestion...use a barn door to hide the washer/dryer.

      Hey Kevin! Im in Ontario Canada. Inspections are done with the city and electrical work is permitted with an ESA permit (both of which I had). In my next videos (about the basement reno) I am going to go into more details about the permitting because it will show all the different inspections I needed from pre-construction to final occupancy. Haha thanks for the offer - next time I'm in KY I'll join you and your crew for a job! Appreciate the design tip with tiles right to wood and sliding barn door!

    I like your dough/pasta board, I’m over here in Scotland, I generally make charcuterie boards. Mainly as a hobbie, but have been asked to make a similar board that you have made yourself. I also noticed that old Diamond Back Mtn Bike in your workspace must be a 90’s model with that paint design. Happy wood working.

    What a beautiful bed. A lot of woodworkers who are picking up the hobby get disheartened by not owning a table saw. You showed them that although the work would be a lot easier. There are other ways to get things done. I respect that. I’m my experience I’ve had a head board split because of wood movement. I had used dominos instead of dowels but the same theory applies. I would suggest what I’ve done to fix that issue. Secure it using dados cut from router. Use dowels on the top plank only and left the middle and bottom plank float freely. But hey, if it works. It works. You might not even experience this. But it’s good to know a work around I guess

    Good workmanship, good video quality, and good results. Cannot ask for anything else. I get the impression that you would enjoy working with more hand tools. Have your thought about adding some planes or spoke shaves to your tools in the future. A small lottery win should give you all you need. A good woodworker to check out on what you need would be Rob Cosman on which ones to start out with.

    • @andrewpinson1268
      @andrewpinson1268 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@calvin.cooper I have a large number of planes. If I could change things I would not have bought so many Lie Nielsen planes even thought IMO they are the best. IF you learn how to sharpen planes like Cosman most planes will serve you. Woodriver would be my top choice because they are not to expensive. Then Lee Valley's Veritas planes are close behind Lie Nielsen in quality. My last advise sir. Keep on woodworking.

    I'm curious if the opposite gran direction of ends caused problems.

    • @calvin.cooper
      @calvin.cooper ปีที่แล้ว

      It does not. Im assuming your referring to wood expansion. The board is designed to allow the wood to expand through the seasons. The reason for the side peices on the ends is for aesthetics and helps keep the board flat over time.

    • @timrenaud8673
      @timrenaud8673 ปีที่แล้ว

      You glued the biscuits that were cut larger in place, thus locking them in place and not allowing the wood to expand.

      the part that sticks up (lip) is a 1.25 x 1.25 inch piece that is glued along the edge to allow it to catch on the side of the counter. I also used 2 screws hidden under some wooden dowels to hold it in place

    Thank you for the great instructions you provide. I really enjoy your videos. However, I have a question. How do we weather proof the sides which back up against the back wall. I’m anchoring my shed to the wall of my house. I have a brick veneer house, but the concern would be the same regardless of it being weatherboard or brick veneer. My concern is when it rains directly in that area (back house wall) or when the wind pushes the rain in that direction, it will rot out the back wall. Does anyone here have any ideas or suggestions to deal with this? Thank you guys in advance 🙏

    • @calvin.cooper
      @calvin.cooper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest having the ice and water guard or some other waterproof membrane lap up onto the side of the house. You could also use a metal flashing sealed at the top.

    • @calvin.cooper
      @calvin.cooper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It is a 9 inch front bench vise. It serves its purpose- it has tremendous grip strength and runs smoothly. My only complaint is if you clamp something on the side, it will rack slightly (the other empty side will be pulled in more making the vise face and bench no longer parallel. Here is the link for the vise: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B078XSLZ3S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. If you have the budget, I would go for a Sjoberg vise. They are very strong and probably the best front vise you can buy.

    Fantastic build! Appreciate both the aesthetics & workmanship. Also liked & subbed. P.S. If its not offending, could you consider not including a ton of background music and instead just keep the sound of the tools themselves? Voiceover is great, but the music fading in and fading out after each sentence is somewhat jarring to my brain :) Could just be me though!
