Prime Conditions on The Grudge | Rocky Peak Mountain Biking | Simi Valley | January 2023
First ride back on the "Analog" MTB after recovering from a torn PCL. Safe to say the conditions did not disappoint & neither did the bike! Way different than riding the eMTB.

Valhalla MTB Trail Downhill - 2022 Mondraker Crafty SE
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The video starts on the lower half of Valhalla nicknamed "lord of the butterfly's - LoTB". This where where the trail gets steep and technical with sections hitting -42% grade. The steep top sections is manageable at slower speeds but if you commit to a fast pace, there is no slowing down until after the dead tree drop. This trail throws just about everything it can at you. SoCal MTB Hidden Gem - Skyline Motorway Singletrack
มุมมอง 7652 ปีที่แล้ว
Tucked away in the Verdugo Mountains, Skyline Motorway features 2.9 miles of descent with 1,600ft of elevation change. Although this trail is by no means a secret, I would most definitely consider it a hidden gem! This ride was on a 2022 Mondraker Crafty SE eMTB - 160mm of travel with a Fox 38 and Float X rear. Filmed on a GoPro Hero Max in 360 mode, then cropped down. Check it out for yourself...

My Favorite "Backyard" MTB Trail - VALHALLA
มุมมอง 5224 ปีที่แล้ว
Catch a first person view down one of my favorite MTB trails in Los Angeles! Valhalla is roughly 1.2mi long and drops over 1,200ft averaging -18.7%. The lower half mile of the trail drops 800ft averaging -24% with some sections hitting -45%! Make sure your brakes are running good before dropping into this BEAST!

Skyline Mountain Way is an old abandoned fire road in the Verdugo Mountains. Over the years it has slowly turned into a single track. This was our first time riding down! Enjoy!

Hitting The Grudge on lap 1 at Rocky Peak. Although it has been a bit dry, The Grudge is still ready to rip! Testing out the new GoPro Hero 7 Black on a chest mount. Video Settings Below: Shot at 1080 60fps Hypersmooth Protune on - ISO max 800 - Forgot to turn on exposure lock. Oh well! I also have a foam cover over the Go Pro to reduce wind noise.

Respect 🫡 some good riding man
You left back there somewhere, Great riding! Keep shreddin
Good video and nice riding! I was just introduced to this trail recently - so fun!! I did it on my gravel bike. Right now, the top part is a little loose and chunky, but the bottom section is awesome. The only part I didn't ride is the steep pitch right after the switchback before the bridge. It caught me by surprise as I came around the turn, and I played it safe. It was a bit more sketchy than how it looks in this video. Cheers!
Good ole crotch angle
damn sick riding. i felt 4:21 in my bones haha
Thanks! 🤘Yea, I was definitely not expecting the ditch to be that pronounced/wide ha. Was worried about my wheel for a few seconds!
How much of that water pool at 0:33 is pee? I always wanna pee there but I feel bad lol
lol! I'll remember this comment the next time I ride past.
Gross man don’t pee in there 😂
Yesterday was the first time I hit the grudge and some of the stuff you do makes me look bad at mtb💀
Ha! You just have to ride it more to get comfortable. Rocky Peak is a great place for progression. Keep shreddin!
mobbin
Gopro effect does not do this video justice. Awesome riding my dude. I still need to work up the courage to hit some of those small jumps.
Thanks! The trail is definitely running near perfect. It’s a great time to ride it before it gets dry. Easier to build confidence now ! 🤘

Sweet thanks. The commies have our trails in SB closed so heading down to Simi!!!
If you ride RP 80% of the time and Laguna steeps and like trails all the time, would the rise be enough bike? Not sure if the HT angle would be ideal.
It definitely has a solid foundation and potential, but as it sits stock you'd be hurting a bit. Definitely would want to upgrade to 4 piston brakes front and rear first. On the H15 I was riding the 150/140 felt good but requires a lot of work. I know plenty of people that went 160/150 and love it. The HTA doesn't bother me as both of my 160/150mm enduro bikes over the past few years have been 65.9. With that being said, I have been spending time recently on slacker bikes and have enjoyed it. If RP and Laguna are your go to, the Kenevo SL is where you'd want to be, but that SL motor is not cutting in todays market and I foresee Specialized coming out with a more powerful SL motor in the near future!🤘
@@austenczapla8630 got it. Thanks for the thorough response. I’m on a Giga now, 180/170, and I feel going down and still trying to ride the same trails won’t be a good idea and I’ll regret it.
Rippin' 🤘👊
Zoomin' down on the Crafty SE!
damn... u are scootin that trail !!
Great riding Austen- you make the sketchy sections super smooth. Hope to see ya on the trails soon R
Straight bombing the downhill!!
where you park and climb up? The Brand motorway is closed.
I would just use the Brand motorway. The barricade at the bottom of Brand Motorway have been moved slightly to the side by someone. I have seen and met several people biking and walking up and down there since it became closed. Around 3/4 up the trail there are some rock slides that covers it. It's already a path over the largest one. The other rock slides have only left a few big rocks here and there. Edit : fixed a few of my typos
What do you think of these brakes?
They honestly aren't too bad and I'm not a huge fan of SRAM brakes. On eMTBs I prefer Magura MT7's or TRP - Something with a bit more modulation.
@@austenczapla8630 I'm glad to hear this. My bike arrives next week and I have doubts about these brakes. I don't ride really hard and I'm not heavyweight so I think they will be fine.
And what do you think about the bike, geometry and suspension system kinematics?
@@helderfixe Compared to everything else I've ridden, nothing beats it. My confidence on the bike AND confidence in the bike itself has been noticeable. I'm also a huge fan of the 30mm stem - keeps everything tight and snappy on the front end. The only thing I would change are the tires. I prefer 2.4/2.5 over 2.6 front and rear.
Dude that is like half my time, lol 😂
Ha! It's running really good right now. I'm sure you could get a faster time!
Is this in La Crescenta?
It’s above Burbank on the front side of the Verdugo Mountains.
would this be safe for a person with a regular amount of bicycle experience to attempt? Kinda new to the area thinking about getting a bike.
It's a pretty easy trail for most MTBer's. The only challenge is from 2:20 - 2:38 in the video. That is the section of trail that washed away years ago and it's been very narrow ever since. If you are not up for riding it, you can walk the bike. Hope this helps!
That looks awesome
Where is it located? I looked up on MTB project and nothing came up under that name.
Valhalla is an unsanctioned trail on top of tujunga near the free way
You Fuck Faces were flying!!
Do you have any videos on jumping the trump wall in LA? New to the area been looking for a place with some variety
Dude, That is so fast. I hope you're wearing a full helmet!
Only a half shell in this video. At the time, I did not have a lightweight full face!
Are there any safe trails near LA? Every video ive seen appears to be on a super dangerous trail
In all seriousness, no, 90% of them are like this. I live in Pasadena and just about every trail is like this, you ride on the edge of a cliff. Some more so than others. Mountain biking never clicked for me until I went and rode in Arizona because of this. There are some fire roads and such in places like the Verdugos and Cherry Canyon that aren’t quite on the edge of a cliff but if you try hard enough you can still fall 400 feet.
what kind of bike do you have? what bike do you recommend for trails out around there?
What kind of bike do you have? I'm trying to get into MTB and hit up the trails around here too. What would you recommend?
I currently ride a Rocky Mountain Instinct BC Edition 29ner. It is a 160mm Enduro/Trail bike. I recommend something with at least 130-140mm of travel. That amount of travel is great for most riding in Socal.
How do you get there?
You can access this via Verdugo Peak. It should also show up on Goggle Maps if you search Skyline Mountain Way Burbank CA
@@austenczapla8630 where did you park your car Sir? Did you go up on a fire road or something?
@@austenczapla8630 Isn't the trail damaged now?
@@graveyard63 It's been repaired
@@socaljoe How do you know?
Amazing video Austen! Skyline Mountain Way looks like a fun place to bike with amazing views of Burbank! Where do you plan to ride next?
Thank you! It definitely was an amazing trail with an even better view. Rocky Peak in Simi Valley will be the next stop!
