United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ต.ค. 2020
I’m the founder of How To Harp and Principal Scottish Harp Tutor at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. I’ve recorded albums and performed all over the world but I discovered early in my career that teaching is my main passion. I LOVE it!!
I want to help you become a better harpist, not simply teach you tunes. I want you to learn in new, exciting and successful ways. I want you to develop better technique and sound production so everything you play sounds fantastic. I want you to be inspired. But most of all I want you to feel confident and happy in yourself and your harping.
Top-level teaching from an experienced professional should be available to everyone no matter your level, budget, background or location, and this is why I created How To Harp!!
Qualifications
First Class (Hons) Bachelor of Arts in Scottish Music
Postgraduate Diploma (with distinction) in Scottish Music Performance
Master of Education in Learning & Teaching in the Arts
Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

The second video was about why you need a big gap between your thumb and fingers, and what happens if this goes wrong. th-cam.com/video/rcyNcQYTF_o/w-d-xo.html
This video goes over why you need to keep your resting fingers in your palm when you tucking, why this will help, and what happens if this goes wrong.

You’re my favorite tutor in learning the harp. I like your style of teaching. Thank you.
Oh…good reminder!🙏
Exactly! 👍 Easy one to forget and pick up bad habits.
Beautiful!!
Thank you! 😊
As usual, this is a great demonstration
Thank you! 🤩
As a self-taught adult, I’ve wondered how long should one place a beginner piece before moving on or adding another? Is there some sort of sign that you’ve “mastered” it? Or is mastering not what we are after in the beginning? What is the goal for each piece in the earliest stages?
This is a great question but is one of those 'how long is a piece of string' type questions. In essence, your goal is to master the skills in the tune, mastering the skills will allow you to play that tune, and others proficiently. And will prepare you to move on to more advanced tunes, with more advanced skills. But you want to think about what your over-arching goal is. Do you want to continue to challenge yourself, or are you happy playing tunes at the same level for a while? Everyone wants something different from their harp journey, so you have to answer that very personal question before you can address the questions you asked. Hope this helps! The main thing is to enjoy the journey!!
I have long fingers and been struggling with my thumb placement for awhile so this was great! Thanks so much!
Amazing! So glad it was helpful!
Love this! So, so helpful! Thanks ever and so 🙏
Thank you! Glad it was helpful! Work through the series and if you have any questions pop them in the comments. x
I’m so glad I found your channel. You really explain techniques to the tee. I’m very newbie at harp playing and my harp has not arrived yet, 😂LOL!! I like your style of teaching. For sure, I will be watching your channel again and again.
Welcome! Glad you are enjoying the channel. If you ever have any questions just pop them in the comments. x
A newbie here. This is very helpful. Thank you. Subscribed.
Glad it was helpful! Welcome! Work through the series and if you have any questions drop them in the comments. :-)
Thank you so much! Wonderful and so very inspiring. Loved the bit about going blank during a performance. I have done this as a dancer and as a musician and have always managed to keep going without the audience noticing. My daughter and I both "forgot" the same section of a choreography during a performance together- we just raised our eyebrows, smiled and picked up the dance according to the music. No one knew but us.
You are so welcome! So interesting to hear about the similarities between music and dance. Lovely to be dancing with your daughter too. 😍
Both beautiful and peaceful! Keep it up 👍👍
Thank you! 😃
Of course 🙃👍 can you tag me when you play the advanced version?
The full versions of all three are already posted!! Here is the advanced - th-cam.com/video/BFZWVdkLk3U/w-d-xo.html
@HeatherDownieHarpist oh, my bad 😅 thanks 👍
Great explanation; thanks for distinguishing the differences in finger length!
Glad it was helpful! All hands are different and all teachers should acknowledge this but so many learners are told they are doing things wrong simply because they physically can't do what they are being asked to do. X
Stopped by to say that I love your sound and your hair looks very stylish ❤
Thank you! 😊
Really interesting interview, thank you.
Thanks for listening.
This is fabulous. Lovely voice ❤ 🎉
Thank you. 😊
I love this song!
Me too!
That's a sweet piece! There's also the duet between Jack and Sally at the end. (My husband and I sang that to each other on our anniversary!😊👩❤️💋👨)
Awwwwwwww.......that is lovely!!! 🥰
Very informative, thanks. I just wish you demonstrated that chord you were talking about 😊
Thanks for watching! I cover this in detail in my level 1 harmony course but this would actually be a good idea for a live. I'll put it on my list as you'd need a full video to go over tuck nine chords. x
What a lovely interview! I'm looking forward to Amy's live Concert and Q&A, in the How To Harp Membership next Sunday!
Can't wait!
Congratulations on your Master's degree! 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!! 😊
So mystical. So magical. So wonderful. Thak you for sharing your talents with us.
Thank you so much! 😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
🥰
Flo is absolutely beautiful, and your playing is even more so! Thank you for blessing us!!
Awww....we both say thank you!! 🤩
Very helpful!! I’ve been playing for almost 20 years & I still struggle a wee bit with “tucking”. Thanks Heather!🎶🎶
You're so welcome! It really helps to go back to the basics once in a while! More videos on this coming soon!!
@@HeatherDownieHarpistGreat can’t wait!!
The whole concert was gorgeous but I am dying for this arrangement/interpretation of What Was I Made For?. I LOVE that so much!
Thanks! Glad you liked it. x I'm still improvising around the chords each time and working through my ideas with it but when I have a 'final' version (which never really exists lol) I'll make an arrangement.
@@HeatherDownieHarpist I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If there's ever an arrangement I'll take it to the Voice of Germany :-) Maybe that will help.
Oh I'd love to see that!!!!! 🥰🥰
I need the rest of this please
I've not finished working on this one, hoping to start playing it in performances soon!
Oh what a wonderful concert! What am I made for still my favourite as I relate to it so much, if you ever do an arrangement for it, let me know, but I don't sing!😅 Just a great way to spend an afternoon. Thanks ❤️
Thanks! If I ever do a full arrangement I'll let you know! ❤️
❤❤❤Great concert. Loved every bit of it. Nice job William you made our lady shine.
Thanks for listening and for all the support and kindness! x
Bravo! Thank you so much 💐
Thank you for watching and the lovely comment!
I loved the whole concert but especially The Dowie Dens O Yarrow!
Ohh.....I like that one!! Thank you!
How lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful concert! 😍
Thank you so much!! 😊

Beautiful ❤️ is the harp connected to reverb? Is it carbon fiber?
Thanks!! Yes, and yes!! At this performance I think I used EQ, compression, reverb and delay on this track. And yeah, the harp is carbon fibre.
Honestly, both you and the harp are breathtaking!! literally!! Maybe the way you talk.. like in love with Buckley
Lovely❤
Thank you! 🤩
Beautiful.
Thank you!
I had a bad day. This made me feel better.
Sorry you had a bad day, really glad this made you feel a bit better. 😊
Such an interesting interview!
Thanks!
I just can't wait to be an advanced harpist!
LOL! With good technique and a supportive community everyone can get to an advanced level!! Go for it!!
