Magnacut: The Steel That TRIED To Beat 154-CM

A heavy hitter for you folks today - get ready for the hate comments.
Essentially, Magnacut was designed by Dr. Larrin Thomas and produced by CPM (Crucible Industries in NY, USA) in an attempt to make a more balanced steel than 154-CM. There's been all sorts of hype on Magnacut however they have not been transparent. As I point out, Magnacut DOES beat 154-CM in a few areas like corrision resistance and carbide structure...but at the end of the day, 154-CM still comes out on top for being the most balanced steel. Let's continue the conversation in the comments.

No real comment on steel, but i’ll comment on education. You imply it’s essentially worthless. I do applaud you and others that get things done. You, however confuse higher education and technical school. Higher education is to teach you to think whereas technical school prepares you for a specific job. And yes anyone can go to school, but can anyone be successful there? As as example you can get things done, great, the guy that invented and perfected the cnc machine you depend on likely had a touch of education. In closing you need both, science and folks that think creat the tools and technologies that doers can utilize to do the things they do. Don’t be quite so arrogant, without education you’d likely be standing in front of a furnace with a hammer and anvil.
woodprix scripts includes most of woodworking plans you can find
Dude...Chill...Your rambling and general negativity with virtually EVERYTHING you spoke about shows some real emotional issues, as well as some real sellf esteem issues. You need to realize that time changes everything and although you make asome valid points, the way youu approach it, can turn people away. If you are so. sure about your claims, then do the science and prove to us, via imperical data that your claims are true. As for me, I managed one of two large test labs that the Gov't and NASA use to do qualifiication and failurs analysis for their items. My advice? Take the emotions out of your presentation and just prove the facts, period. Personally I will reamain open minded until proven otherwise.
Why would you want a steel designed to make round things(bearings)?
I think the difference is that magmacut is harder to heat treat. 154cm has been around for ages and the method is perfected now. 154cm is great for me. Nothing I use a knife for would 154cm not be more than enough for. I would never use it to its potential. CMP154 is a powder metal and a completely different beast. The price is also comparable to magnacut too.
As a person so isn’t so steeped in knife culture and just hearing your argument. It doesn’t actually make any sense. You’re doing a linear comparison between performance and price. That isn’t how anything works when it comes to more premium materials. Once you reach a certain point of optimal price to performance, you will see diminishing returns and exponentially so as you get more and more premium. Also after criticizing that you’d trust the work of people who do the work and not just look at numbers and the data.. you go and admittedly make up cut numbers off data.. as well as using interchangeably using the terms 154cm and CPM154.. it weakens your argument’s and credibility. Just pointing out the weakness of the “not rant” and it comes off as very biased and uninformed. Not saying you are uninformed.. you just come off as uninformed.
Ok why don't you prove it. Make 2 exsct knives with both steels with proper heat treat for both and test them both side by side
Magnawagon. Trendies just being trendy.
You wear helly-thats a feminim name unisexual.
Joe x is a fucking weirdo doing stupid, useless shit. He never should have been censored
Buy a pocket diamond stone don't worry about it and watch some Andy Griffith Show. Your argument is commonly referred to as diminishing returns.
Lol US didnt win 2 world wars. They funded them, then joined at the last minute when the allies couldnt pull it off effectively.
If you are talking about 154cm i think it is a decent steel especially on the kizer knives.. and if you are talking about CPM154 then I think it's decent on the Kershaw knives so all in all there both decent steel!
Although I disagree with your assessment of “best steel” by price, you make some very valid points in this video.
16:00
I prefer 14c28n over 154cm in most categories. What is the price difference between these two steels? Cmp154 is a different animal.
I believe Joe X is misunderstood. While I certainly enjoy the entertainment value he provides, his brutal testing methods are actually quite relevant. Few realize that if the situation should ever arise, we expect our knives and other hardware to perform in the toughest of conditions without fail. Lives can depend on it. Also, like our hardware, a true warrior never leaves the fight and he has proven this. Welcome back, Joe X!
Well, this is actually new to me 😮 Here I was thinking that Magnacut is better than 20CV and much better than 154CM.
I could be wrong here, but just for the sake of being argumentative I wanted to comment this. If my understanding is correct, Dr. Thomas made knives out of every steel that he rated on his website. Thats nowhere near as many knives as say a professional knife manufacturer, but it's definitely more than 10. I enjoy different points of view either way, thanks Jack ✌🏼
Hey there! Much appreciated and I certainly hope that is the case…I just can’t find any photos of knives he’s made. Thanks again my friend!
@@shedknives that is a valid point. I guess I just trust that he is a man of integrity. He has a very good standing and is a very big voice in the knife scene. But I definitely understand your reasoning here. And your skepticism. And I respect that. ✌🏼
@@shedknives and to be clear on one more thing, I think we SHOULD be questioning more. We should be eager to figure things out, learn, and challenge our own beliefs. And I think your brand promotes this. Enjoy the weekend Jack!
@@jimbusmaximus4624 well said, that is exactly what I’m about. I question my own beliefs/understanding just as much (if not more) than that of others. It helps cut the noise and illuminates the core of an idea. Keep on digging deep! Much appreciated and enjoy your weekend as well
I do agree the general public has no idea what they want, watching the masses encourage Kizer & Civivi to move away from steels like 154cm, D2 & VG-10 towards Nitro-V, 14c ect, which have similar properties to low grade cutlery steel like X50 always spun me out. I can appreciate the toughness & fine edges the latter offers, but the average user can't sharpen well enough to take advantage of the small gains offered. With all your hands-on experience, I'm surprised you describe 1095 as "tough." I'd put that label on just about any other steel in the 10xx series, but definitely not 1095. Besides the edge it takes & how easy it is to work, 1095 has to be one of the most over hyped blade steels on the market.
Magnacut is good Only when it's HDR 63+
Some of the things you say are absolutely correct, and your opinion is of course yours, I do think you are missing some points in magnate though, dr Thomas made a steel that was designed to be better than 154, he achieved that at a big cost, it’s expensive. It has less chromium than 154 and because of the use of other alloys he keeps it in solution meaning that it is not forming big chipping chromium carbides and is keeping the blade covered in chromium oxide and scratches will have chromium oxide forming too (preventing iron oxide-rust). The cost is ridiculous though. 154 is made for ball bearings-they tend not to have edges. USA army did not do so well vs Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan, they actually tried to stay out of ww1 and ww2 but got dragged in, the win was a joint effort. Final point not sure you should call a knife the tuatara if you are not from here, if I called a knife the bald eagle you might think I was American and not a New Zealander. Not being mean, just suggesting you may have over looked a few things. Bob was legendary, he tried different things, kept his mind open…
I agree . 154cm is better than magnacut but magnacut has a better name . I ve always said maganacit is so overrated people are insane . I thought it didn’t perform well at all . I also thought Rex 45 from spyderco sucks as well . M4 is much better . 154cm is very good . That’s why Kizer uses it a lot . They have that heat trust down for that steel . What I’ve found is some steels hood the edge better like maxamet native 5 is a good knife imho . 14c , even 8cr has done right by me . The thing is people who don’t use their steels think they know what’s up , lol .
8cr is complete trash.
I'm always gonna be a simp for 14c28n, uwu.
Thanks for sharing. What type of carbon steel are you quenching in this video ? I love working with 5160, 80crv2, 1084, and 15n20 especially. What kind of oil do you use. I mostly work with with parks 50. I love that stuff. Parks AAA is great to for slower quenching materials. I like parks 50 so much that I generally make sure the steel I'm using is best for 7-20 second quench.
Most kmife makers use someone for waterjetting services ...doesnt make you any less of a knife maker.
.187 can be simplified in fraction by saying 3/16" ...its a pretty standard blade stock here in USA
I think you have misunderstood quite a bit about the steels that you're bringing up. I'll be happy to talk with you about some things if youd like, although it does appear that you've taken a premature stance. I find it funny that people argue about stainless steel at all. None of that junk will hold a candle to High Speed Tool Steels and anyone that's looking for superior performance....and knows their 🫏 from a hole in the ground has long sense abandoned stainless steel as a viable option. Gimme somethng that'll patina. Gimme something with a heat treat in the high 60's ....gimme an acre in ecuador. I'll take 5160 or 15n20 over a stainless 7 days a week...but by george if superior performance is what I'm lookimg for...i shop in the adult section. Rex 76 - K390....14c28n is a better option for hard use outdoor stainless than 154 cm , and there's not a reputable knife maker on the planet that wouldn't have a second guess before arguing that. Good luck Jack. Watching your progress and i agree with your decision to heat treat your knives. My wife's resiliance tested at 17 hrc. We of course knew you werent heat treating your knives at that point because you told us, Bob Demarko , and Scab. So no harm no foul , but its exciting to see you choose to sell a completed product for your 24 models. 😎🤘🤘
Thx
Nice, I have one recently, I hope reach your knowledge in CNC
It's so awesome to see this in action.
It's been a privlage good sir
I own 154CM, D2, m390, 8670, 1075-1095, and 14c28n they all feel similar in tastes with very minor differences what I find the biggest difference is in sharpening or how easy something rolls or chips by far the top 3 I own and my favorites are 154CM, m390 and 8670 keep up the awesome work jack!
GREAT feedback - 100% agree. Most steels, no matter the hype, will function the exact same in 80% of regular use. The other 20% is really sharpening & harder objects (rolls), like you said. I appreciate you man and thanks again.
yo homie decided which steel you gonna talk about 154cm or cpm154 they are not the same steel homie , and you switched back and forth talking about cpm154 in one instance and 154cm in the next , cpm154 will be tougher and contain a finer starting edge.
Yeah your totally right My friend! 154cm and CPM154 are 2 different steels! So I don't know if he is confused or what... but I was just about to say the same thing about that but I am glad someone did....
I don't get why these machines don't have high pressure coolant. The ones I work with blast the chips clean off the table
I totally agree. This might just be because it’s a fairly beginner CNC machine, but a better pump can’t be that hard to obtain. This is also an upgraded pump from Tormach too 🤷♂️ Works for now. Thanks for watching!
I like many different knife steels!!! To each their own!!!
100% 🤝
Never going to buy a knife because the steel is more “cost per cut” effective. Back to your car metaphor, a Honda Civic is more “cost per mile” effective than a Ferrari, but I’ll take the Ferrari thank you very much!
Different perspective, I like that! Thank you for watching
Wild
Yes 😂
Ha ha ha, that's one way of putting it.
I rely on smarter-than-me people to show me the statistics and testing when comparing knife steels. I think your saying that magnacut is better in SOME stats, but not 40% better than 154-CM in everything... so it shouldn't be 40% more $$ than 154-CM. I've seen some tests where magnacut cuts twisted sisal rope and stays paper cutting sharp for double the amount of 154-CM. I've whittled wood with magnacut and was surprised that it was still paper cutting sharp after making a small figure. Anyways, thanks for bringing this up. I'll have to review some other reputable tests between the 2 steels. Thanks
Fair point! I do the exact same as well for statistics. I did post a video on chopping/batoning wood with my 154-CM and I had the same razor sharp result. Just wanted to mention for both you and anyone else looking for physical testing on the 154-CM side of things. Thank you for watching, keeping the conversation going, and doing your research!
Magnacut money grab
