From Bottle to Brew: Hijacking Coopers Yeast Like a Pro
G’day and welcome back to the channel! Today, we’re pulling off the ultimate yeast heist-harvesting live yeast straight from a bottle of Coopers Pale Ale and turning it into a full-blown yeast starter for your next homebrew. Why buy expensive yeast packs when you can cultivate your own for free?

✅ How to make a bulk yeast starter (2.5L) and store it for future brews
✅ A step-by-step guide to harvesting yeast from Coopers bottles
✅ Pro tips for success-like preheating bottles to avoid temp shock and using kit yeast as a yeast nutrient
✅ Why sanitation is key (because nobody wants a science experiment in their fermenter)
At the end of this, you’ll have a healthy, active yeast culture ready to take on your next brew. Speaking of which-I need your help! What should we brew with this yeast? Vote in the poll on my community tab, and the winning recipe gets brewed next week! 🍻

Great in depth review and explanation video. The inkbird is $21 off at the moment.👍
@@Pokersmith Thanks for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate that! I wanted to make this a proper resource rather than just a quick overview. Glad you found it useful! Cheers🍻
@1337Haza what's your favourite style of beer to brew and what's your go to style to drink?
@Pokersmith Great question! I love brewing pale ales and IPAs because they’re so versatile and fun to tweak with different hops. As for drinking, I’m a big fan of a well-made lager or a hoppy pale ale or even a good stout -in my climate it’s something crisp, refreshing, and full of flavor! What about you?
@1337Haza I am fairly new to the hobby of brewing and mainly brew the clone kit's from homebrew warehouse in Townsville. I would like to get into all grain but the extra time it takes might put me off a bit. I used to drink boring old xxxx gold but now my taste has changed to really enjoying the pale ales. I currently have two real ales in kegs that I put different amounts of mosaic and cascade hops in to start to get an idea of different dry hop flavours.
@Pokersmith Stay tuned for this week’s episode-it’s like a gym membership for your kit beers, but without the sweating and regret!
Thankyou for a fascinating and instructive video. I'd read of this technique, but didn't fully understand the process. Now I'm enthused to try it myself.
Cheers mate! 🍻 Glad the video helped make it all click! Yeast wrangling is a game-changer-have a crack at it, and you’ll never look at a bottle of Coopers the same way again. Happy brewing! 😆🍺
A right treat, a proper how to video about getting and growing yeast up. Well done Billy so easy to follw thanks
Cheers mate! 🍻 Glad you found it easy to follow-yeast wrangling doesn’t have to be rocket science! Appreciate the support, and more brewing mischief to come. Happy brewing! 😆🍺
I enjoyed that! Nice one
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers for watching! 🍻
Get a FastWasher, thank me later. Wash and sanitize 6 cases of bottles in 2h, maybe 1h work. Bottling bucket with a filling wand, gravity filled from the fermenter. Me and a mate do 50 liter batches and bottling day takes 3 hours tops including cleanup, and we use 33cl bottles. One guy fills, the other caps.
That’s a solid system! A FastWasher definitely takes a lot of the pain out of cleaning bottles-might have to give it a go myself. Teamwork makes the "dream work" too. Cheers for sharing! 🍻
Instead of the bottling tree, I put my bottles (neck down) in the dishwasher and run it without soap or rinsing agent. When i'm ready to bottle, I put the bottling bucket on the counter above the dishwasher. Then pull out the bottles one at a time to fill them. Any drips land on the open dishwasher door.
That’s a clever setup! Using the dishwasher as a bottle rack and drip catcher is a great way to keep things tidy-plus, less cleanup at the end. Smart thinking! 🍻 As for running the dishwasher without soap... yeah, I’m not going there with the Mrs. 😆
Another dodgy Aussie. Love the channel already and just about to start my first brew and thanks so much for the bottling tips. Keep up the great work.
Haha, guilty as charged! 😆🍻 Stoked to hear you’re diving into your first brew-welcome to the obsession! Glad the bottling tips helped, and plenty more to come. Cheers mate! 🍺
Hello from sunny Florida! Thank you for your video(s). I have been brewing for years, but am always looking for new ideas and brewing insights. If I may request… I would really like for you to share any tips you may have regarding ‘No-Chill’ brewing. I understand the concept was an Aussie idea. Thank you again, and best of luck with your channel.
G’day from not-so-sunny (at the moment) Australia! 🌧️😂 Cheers for watching! No-chill brewing is definitely an Aussie classic-perfect for saving water and making brew day easier. I’ll add it to the list for a future video! 🍻 In the meantime, quick tip: use a cube with minimal headspace to limit oxygen pickup. Appreciate the support, mate
Thank you so much for the video. I used to brew in South Australia. Enjoyed it greatly. Now in 🇨🇦
Cheers mate! 🍻 Glad you enjoyed the video! South Australia has a great brewing scene-hope you’re still getting some good homebrews going over in 🇨🇦! Stay warm and keep brewing! 😆🍺
Another great video , that Sierra Nevada is a great drop I’ve done the same harvesting their yeast .
Cheers mate! 🍻 Yeah, Sierra Nevada’s yeast is a ripper-great for a solid house strain. Awesome to hear you’ve had success harvesting it too! Keeps the beer flowing and the wallet happy! 😆🍺
Looks like a great channel in the making! You've certainly got the personality for this sort of thing! Cheers!
Cheers mate! Appreciate the kind words! 🍻 Plenty more brewing mischief to come-hope you stick around for the ride! 😆🍺
@1337Haza I'm subbed and ready for it! I'm excited to see some grain to glass videos if you've got that in mind!
Legend! 🍻 Appreciate the sub! And yep-grain to glass videos are definitely on the cards. Gotta love the full journey from malt to pint! Stay tuned! 😆🍺
Dude you are a CHARACTER! Love this
Haha, cheers mate! Gotta keep things entertaining-beer’s meant to be fun, after all! 🍻😆
I quit sanitizing my caps years ago and have not had an issue. I read once that when using oxygen barrier caps, the sanitizer activates them reducing their efficiency at removing oxygen. Also if you have your lovely wife fill the bottles while you cap saves a lot of time too.
Fair call! If it’s working for you, no reason to change. I’ve heard the same about oxygen barrier caps, but I still give them a quick dunk out of habit. And yeah, having a bottling assistant makes life way easier-might have to bribe mine with a few beers! 🍻😂
If it werent for kegging m, i would have quit brewing years ago. So much better, and worth the expense imo.
Mate, I hear ya! Kegging is an absolute game-changer-no more capping bottles for hours. Pricier upfront, but totally worth it for the convenience (and the perfect pours)! 🍻🔥
Great honest review. One those starter kits from kegland or keg king seem better value and have sanitiser and cleaner included. Look forward to your future content.
Cheers mate! Yeah, the KegLand and Keg King kits definitely give you more bang for your buck-at least they don’t leave you hanging without sanitizer! Appreciate the support, plenty more to come! 🍻
Have few 30 litre canoe drums that I have been using for many years. They come with a bung hole to screw a tap straight in. Usually around $30 from your local camping store, Aussie Disposal here in Victoria.
That’s a great budget-friendly option! Those canoe drums are tough as nails and perfect for big batches. Might have to check out Aussie Disposal next time I’m in Vic-cheers for the tip! 🍻
it TH-camErs
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, I definitely need to work on getting it out there more-brewing the beer is the easy part, but promoting it is a whole other game! Cheers for the support! 🍻
my phone must have been listening to me cursing up a storm and bottling last night. I open TH-cam today and this is the first video that came up. where do I sign up for the support group hehehe. cool video, I will be looking into some of the equipment mentioned here. I'm done filling and shaking bottles to rinse
Haha, gotta love when the algorithm actually gets it right! 😂 Bottling rage is real-you’re definitely not alone! Glad you enjoyed the video, and hopefully, some of these tips make your next bottling session a bit less painful. 🍻 Cheers!
Great tips, even greater jokes!
Haha, thanks! I try to keep things light and fun while still providing useful information. Cheers for watching! 🍻
Great info for the new brewers, Cheers

Homless guys undies ha crack me up Mate your videos are really good most enjoyable watched both on the Coopers . I’m ex Townsville 👍

Nice enjoy the video
@@SkeetTennessee Thanks mate! I’m glad you enjoyed it - Cheers!🍻
Gone from bottling beer to kegging my beer but getting right into brewing big time now and back bottling a few brews to take to places. Great tips.
Sounds like you’ve got the best of both worlds-kegs for convenience and bottles for sharing! Glad you found the tips helpful. Cheers and happy brewing! 🍻
Some good tips here. Thanks.
Glad you found the tips useful! Cheers for watching! 🍻
Found your channel today and subscribed and loving the content. I have been homebrewing beer on and off for ten years. I finally made a four tap kezzer out of an old deep freezer. Now making heaps of beer and cider. Kegging beer is so much better than bottling. Now thinking of getting into all grain brewing soon.
That's fantastic-it's great to see a fellow homebrewer getting back into the game with a kegging setup. You'll love all-grain brewing!
cool video - tyvm
Thanks for taking the time to comment - I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It means a lot to know that you enjoyed it - Cheers!
4.5 litre oxebars do it for me now - but i am very lazy
Sounds like you’ve got it figured out! Those 4.5L Oxybars are a great middle ground-way less hassle than bottling but still portable. Nothing wrong with being efficient (or lazy 😉). Cheers! 🍻
@@1337Haza yeah i can drink one of those in a day no problem!!
@@garyballared2077 Haha, now that’s the spirit! 🍻 Gotta love a session that lasts just the right amount of time. Cheers! 😆
Keep up the good work! I would be interested in a video with your experiences with extracting the maximum amount of aroma from hops (hopstand VS dry hopping, pellets VS hop flowers etc. )!
Thanks mate! That’s a great idea for a video-there’s a lot to unpack when it comes to getting the best hop aroma. Hopstand vs. dry hopping, timing, temperature, and even the form of hops all play a role. I’ll add it to the list! Cheers 🍻
I made the switch to kegging about a year ago, but recently brewed a stout with my brother in law that we plan to bottle and split between us. Good tips, thanks a lot
Nice one! Kegging is a game changer, but there’s something satisfying about bottling a good stout to enjoy later. Hope it turns out great-cheers! 🍻
I fixed my issue with 50 12 oz bottles…. I use 64 growlers and stainless steel gallon mini kegs… I’m done in half the time and don’t regret it or dread it. Three the 12 oz bottles away, well except for a few 12 packs I use for trials/friends.
That’s an awesome setup! Switching to growlers and mini kegs sounds like a massive time saver, and stainless steel gear is always a great investment. I hear you on the 12 oz bottles-I’ve kept a few around for the same reasons, but it’s hard to beat the efficiency of larger containers. Cheers for sharing your approach!
Thanks for the info. Thinking about switching to growlers for my next batch.
Thank you for the great video. Cheers!
@shawncoffin1153 Thanks for stopping in - I’m glad you enjoyed the video. It means a lot to know it was helpful-cheers for watching!
Hey bud, looking forward to your videos. Maybe some proper brewery tour in the nearest future? Your brewing setup looks very decent, subscribed already 👍
Thanks for stopping in on the Channel Page - Great idea with a a bit of a tour of the dog house - I will definitely see what I can do for you guys.
Yes I enjoy my neck oil and never too old to learn from other like minded people . The price of a good drop has gone through the roof lucky I enjoy making it and consuming the fruits of my labour Cheers …John .
I store my empty clean bottles upside-down in a beerkrate instead of that drying tree. I clean them in a dishwasher before brewing, clean them with starsan than dry on the tree after a visual inspection. I don't use carbonation cubes, I mix sugar with hot water and add that to the beer filled bucket. (More control over carbonation levels.)
@@hetspook666 Thanks for the comment! Bulk priming is definitely a great method, and I’m glad it works well for you. I totally get what you mean-I wanted to keep this video focused on beginner-friendly tips without diving too deep into sugar-to-CO2 calculations. Maybe a future video could cover more advanced techniques like bulk priming in detail. Cheers for watching and sharing your thoughts!
More chance of getting oxidation with bottling bucket.
Liked your video I was kegging for years now bottling again some say I’ve gone backwards but I’ve adopted the KISS principle 👍subscribed
Thanks for the sub and the support-really appreciate it! Going back to bottling definitely isn’t “backwards,” especially if the KISS principle is working for you. Sometimes simple is better! Cheers for watching and happy brewing! 🍻
@Sailor426 that is true, but if your not using co² to pre fill the bottle there will be oxygen anyways. The yeast while eating the sugar will use that oxygen. Most off flavours will be gone after 3 weeks stored warm. It doesn't need a lot of movement to mix it.
Thanks so much for the video. Well done!
