The Sarawak Veterinary Services started as an Animal Husbandry Branch in the Department of Agriculture in 1953 and in the year 2000 the branch was upgraded to one of the five Divisions of the department. The Veterinary Public Health 1999 was passed by the State Assembly on 6th December, 1999 and enforced on 1st June 2000. The State Veterinary Authority (SVA) was appointed on 5th May, 2000. It was reported in the World Organization for Animal Health Office of International Epizooties (OIE) Performance of Veterinary Services (PVS) Evaluation Report that the capacity of the Veterinary Division within the Department of Agriculture is unable to adequately cope with rapid changes and needs of the animal industry as well as the Veterinary Public health.
