Light shimmer (glare/shine) FX attached to mesh in Spine 2D #madewithspine
In this video I'll show you how to create an interesting light shimmer effect and add it to an already configured mesh in Spine.
I will show two ways to achieve this effect, using the full sequence or just a few images, and also give some recommendations for optimization.
0:00 The first part of the video is creating a light shimmer (glare/shine) effect in After Effects.
2:15 The second is working with a png sequence in Spine 3.8.
8:59 The third part is another method, in which I use only a few frames from the png sequence (only 5 images instead of 21), which significantly saves space in the atlas, but at the same time increases performance costs (increases the number of vertex transforms).
11:56 And in the end I showed how to apply a png sequence to a mesh (the same as in the second part of the video), but for Spine 4.1+, which introduced tools for working with sequences.

      these are just duplicated layers, offset along the z-axis, I also add a mask in which I adjust the expansion with a script, the coefficient is tied to the layer index, so the closer the layer, the more the mask cuts through it, this creates the effect of a convex surface

    • @megacheak

      I prepared this effect in AE, exported as png. sequence. Then inserted it into Spine, used a duplicate of the shoulder pad mesh, and replaced its texture with my effect (using a linked mesh), so the already configured weights from the shoulder pad were saved for the sequence. With this method, the texture size is not important, it can be smaller, the main thing is that the proportions of the picture are preserved, then the texture is correctly stretched in the mesh area.

    Looks great. How do you feel about optimization? export to sequence 60frames? For example, that's a lot for the engine as for a single element. How would you handle it?

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question. We try to do everything in Spine as much as possible, but sometimes we still use sequences for some elements of the game. In theory, you can make a complex rig, animate meshes (like morphing) and achieve a similar result (3D animation), but it will be very difficult to calculate (render) and time-consuming. Sequence, on the contrary, is very easy to render, the only downside is that it takes up a lot of space in the game's resources. For such purposes, we render a sequence at 30 frames per second, unfortunately this is not an ideal solution, since real-time animation will be played at 60 frames and look smoother...

      I'll add one more thing. As for character animation, after Spine I also don't want to do it in AE, making a 2.5D effect with morphing or other deformations is quite difficult and the project can slow down a lot, it's not pleasant to work after Spine. But as for creating various effects, I always do them in AE, and then use static fragments (or sequences) in Spine.

    Is this background element frame by frame or it's just texture with zoom out and offset?

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi. These are just textures animated with offset by position, rotation and size. There is a fragment with a small sequence (frame by frame) at the 50th second - small stars on the right, but in the whole these are all separate images. Like one layer increases (moves or rotates) and goes into transparency, and the second (the same), starts from transparent and smaller and as it appears increases to the original size. Thus, we get a looped animation for one element. Then we tie it to one common bone (group) and duplicate and arrange these groups.

      Yes, clipping slot could be attached to bones, and weights on it's vertices works like on regular mesh.

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would also recommend avoiding using the mask as much as possible, as it puts a lot of CPU load. And with a large number of animations (characters) with masks on the screen, there may be performance problems. That is, you always need to think about how you can create this or that effect without a mask and only use a clipping mask as a last resort. But if you have only one animation on the screen or are making animation for export to video, then there are no special restrictions.

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was often asked about this... I want to make a tutorial, but I don’t have time yet, I’m very busy at work. But essentially this is a sequence prepared in AE, light sweep fx + displacement map fx, and then you need to render this sequence in the dimensions (proportions) of the mesh in Spine 2D in order to duplicate the finished mesh with adjusted weights and replace it with the resulting sequence (using linked mesh). In this case, the weights for this sequence are inherited automatically, and if the proportions are different, for example the glow goes beyond the boundaries of the object, then you will have to adjust the weights manually.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@megacheak thanks you so much, so the key is render frame by frame from AE to Spine and using linked mesh for using that right?

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. Here's some more information on setting up effects. It is advisable to make a composition for this effect with a large margin on the sides. Otherwise, there may be problems with the Displacement Map, also the layer (solid) with Light Sweep must be the same size (as the composition), and the effect must be in cut-out mode. Then we add the Displacement Map effect, and as a map we indicate the layer with the art, and for the distortion channels we use (light or saturation... try different ones), and we set the value itself to be significant (200-600 pixels, depends on the size of the composition), then, the excess can be cut off with the same layer with the art (assigning it as a mask) or throw the Set Mate effect. Additionally, you can decorate it with some kind of Glow or Star Glow (Trapcode) or Shine. It is advisable to trim the final composition for rendering to the size of the original art so that it matches the texture in Spine, this will make it easier to transfer existing weights.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@megacheak thanks you so much

  •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    hi, can you sharing the method for the FX in background and the shine around the character?

    • @megacheak
      @megacheak 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Regarding highlights on gold, I responded to your comment in another video. The dissolve of the background is fx in AE (dissolve luma or luma key), the shine (rays) behind the character is also done in AE (Trapcode Shine or Sapphire Edge Rays). In this case, in the final it was an export from AE (sequence), but you can also insert these effects directly into the spine, simply edit them into separate sequences, you can make them smaller (for optimization) and increase them in the spine. You can also use not all frames of the sequence, but for example every 5 (or other interval) and animate them overlapping through transparency in the spine (as in my example with the fireworks).

      Hmm... This is not the first time I have been asked about this. I'll try to make a tutorial soon. But essentially this is a light sweep fx + displacement map, and then you need to render this sequence in the dimensions (proportions) of the mesh in the spine in order to duplicate the finished mesh with configured weights and replace it with the resulting sequence (using a linked mesh).
