The 300ZX TURBO Project *Ep15* Rear Sway Bar Bushings & End Links on my 86 Z31
Hey Glen. I'm going over the front suspension a 85 Turbo that I bought. It already has the converted kyb shocks and red lowering springs. But the springs aren't under any tension and I can move them a bit by hand with the car off the ground. Trying to figure out what could cause this 🤔. I appreciate any input. Thanks!
Well, having not seen them, I would guess they are quite a short spring. Perhaps the previous owner cut them to get his desired ride height. It’s not ideal since there is the risk with spirited driving the strut could reach near full extension (over a crest in the road for example) and the spring could possibly shift out of position when the strut compresses again. Again, I haven’t seen the set up. If you don’t plan on changing the springs it might be worth securing the spring to the lower spring cup with wire or something to at least keep it in position. Many years ago when I built and campaigned a rally car that’s whet we did (of course those cars were often airborne). Cheers
Like watching pait dry !
I've read "Freddy Krüger" nightmares about that 21mm nut in the corner of the wishbone, not to mention breaking that joint loose! And you did it with a little joint fork tool, wow! 👏👏👏 so you must be one of the luckiest E46 owners who ever did this job!
Yea, it wasn’t too bad. I think being a west coast car probably helped a lot!
Looks amazing! A couple of months ago I bought my son a 2000 E46 convertible -- it has the same beige interior, but despite being a very low miles car (< 50K orig miles), the interior definitely shows its age (no tears, but the leather is a bit faded). I think we might tackle this project!
Re-dying the interior makes a huge difference to the appearance. And whilst it’s all apart it makes a deep clean way easier too. Check out my other videos on the rest of the interior restoration. Good luck with the project and thanks for the comment. Cheers
Thank you so much, your series of videos pf this, suspension and brakes were everything i needed to do the job myself successfully. If this helps anyone else with the same problem as me (and kind of in the video), my steering knuckle and struts were REALLY stuck together good. After soaking in pb blaster didn't do the trick, hitting it with a hammer or trying to wedge something in,, ultimately what broke them free was a lot of force using a sledgehammer or really anything with a lot of weight to it while the strut is attached with the bolts under the hood. I had to go from a few different angles as well.
Thank you for the comment. Glad to hear the videos are helpful. I can fully appreciate the struggle to separate the vase of the strut. As I mention several times in various videos I’m fortunate this car has very little rust or corrosion. But I’ve lived and worked on cars in the rust belt so I know the struggle. Good luck with the project.
So I did my brakes about 30k miles ago and the tire shop said the rears were bad already, I didn't believe it but took a look and they are shot. Was I supposed to do this when I put new pads on in the rear? I got 80k out of the past two sets but I didn't install the pads on those. I thought twisting the piston back adjusted the parking brake as well?
I didn’t touch this adjustment when I did my rear brakes. I believe this was needed primarily because there ends up being some stretch in the cable. But having made this adjustment I would check there is no dragging on new rear pads.
thank you for this
Glad to hear the video was of some help. Cheers
Nice video 👌🏻 thanks
I appreciate the comment. Cheers
Thanks Glenn. I have a 85 31 NA that I purchased last year. Will be tackling this soon - probably in the spring. Nice call out in the digital dash difference. Looking forward to more videos. I believe I will be changing my CHTS and this sending unit in the spring. Nice looking ride!
Thanks for the comments. I hope the video is helpful. I did the CHTS when I replaced the timing belt and water pump. The videos are Episode 18 pt 1 & 2. Good luck with the car.
@@boatinglife1 thank you so much! I can’t wait to report back.
W164 2009 Model, I don't even have a wire that provides power to this amplifier!!! I wonder if power is coming through the Fakra cable somehow. A2518701889. <-- Satellite/XM enabled headunit, but I have since swapped out the old headunit for an aftermarket one. I was thinking of swapping out the existing AM FM amplifier for this model and manually supply power as was done in this video.
Thank you for this, I am going to tackle this very soon
I appreciate the comment. I hope the video is helpful. Good luck with your ZX. Cheers
very clean build sir. I hope to achieve this with my 50th AE
Thank you. Good luck with your AE - always liked that edition.
Your video is super underrated it should be number one on the search list
Thank you. I very much appreciate the comments.
Great video, thank you! I just recently bought a project 300zx. This helps a lot.
I’m glad the video will be of some help. Good luck with the ZX
Thank you for all work that has gone into these videos. I am especially glad I found this very detailed series as I just picked up an 86 Z31 NA and I learned a great deal from you. Thanks again!
I’m so glad the videos are helpful. That makes the work on the worth it. Good luck with your ZX
Very helpful. Thanks
Thank you. I appreciate the comment. Cheers
Good morning . Can you provide an email address with a list of checking ECU codes for Z31? I'm rebuilding a 300zx, your TH-cam videos are very helpful. great job. Thank you
Nice video... good job !! Have a 2007 BMW 650i and some wear on that same bolster area of the car. Cream beige BMW calls it. Not sure I am brave enough to do this tho.
I restored a 2000 BMW E46 convertible and did the entire interior. The colour was hellbeige 2 (light beige). I have a video on my channel of dying the seats and interior panels. The results were very good.
Thanks ..again, Thank you
How much torque did you use for the ball joint castle nut? Can’t find a spec for that… thanks!
Manual says 71-88 ft-lbs Cheers
Is it possible to dye beige black? Mines all beige like yours but I want the middle of the door cards and the arm rest black to break it up a bit.
I haven’t tried a colour change but the people at auto leather dye told me it works well. It may be better to spray the dye to get an even colour change. If you do it send a picture - I’d like to see the end result. Cheers
I don't have one of those cars , just interesting to watch . I can see that if I was watching to learn how to reset the service indicator, I might be a bit disappointed. One of those jobs that's easy if you know how, not so easy if you don't.
Fair - not my finest videography- I’ll probably pull the video down and edit it. Cheers
I appreciate all of the videos you made on this car, and I hope the new owner enjoys it!
Thank you for the comment. I’m hoping it’s gone to a good home! I think it did. Cheers
Very impressive result Glen, she is a stunner! I bet it was super satisfying to take a machine with really good bones and restore it and improve it to your taste then pass it on to the next caretaker. White with Burgandy interior combo is close to my heart. I was lucky enough in my youth to have a ‘86 Porsche 944 Turbo from ‘01-‘07 with the same color scheme. I always thought it was very classy and yes, very 80s.
Thank you - I appreciate the comment. I actually enjoy the planning, the restoration work and learning / improving my skills more than using the finished project. I remember test driving a 1987 944 back around 1990. It wasn’t the turbo but it too was white with the deep burgundy interior. I ended up picking up a 928S but I always think that 944 would have suited me better. Cheers
2. The engine belt is whistling. I hope it's not a pulley. What should I do? By the way, is a Mercedes Benz ML 320 cdi
I would check the idler or tensioner pulley first.
The filter I bought is a little smaller than the original. Apparently it works. Does it matter?
The only concern I would have is if a smaller filter might restrict fuel flow at high loads - wide open throttle or towing - things like that. During normal driving I would expect it would work ok
Hello Sir. Thank you for your videos. I just got 2 questions for you and see if you can help me
Great video!
Thank you. I appreciate the comment.
Awesome outcome Glen! Keep up the good work and I would love to see more!
Thank you - I appreciate the comment. Hopefully I’ll find an interesting new project.
I absolutely love this whole project! I’ve got myself an NA, 1986 in white. I’ve loved working on it. It’s my first car I fully own and it’s my first car I’ve gotten to learn from. I’ve done mostly maintenance because I bought it at such low miles (18k), but so far this Chanel has given me the confidence to really dive in and make smart decisions on what to change and what to keep factory fresh. I look forward to the future of this build and I look forward to my own future with this car.
Thank you for the comments. It’s nice to here the videos were of some help. It’s always great to learn new skills. Keep on working on that Z31!
Really agree with your automotive philosophy. Thanks.
Thank you. That’s what I enjoy about a project like this - making it your own.
NICE
Thank you
Thanks for sharing! I have a W163 and I installed a new head unit and it picks up FM channels but not a single AM channel. I know which connector and pin in the factory radio harness is for the signal amplifier; however, I don't know if it needs ACC power or something like a remote signal to turn it on. I can't find that information anywhere. Hah! I should have waited until the end and you showed it needs constant power. Thanks!
Got the same. Nice video - thanks. The soft touch is just a pain really - do you remember the color code?
I have paint that was mixed but the label with the formula is missing. BMW call it Hellbeige 2 (German for light beige). The local auto body paint store mixed it for me. They colour matched off a piece of the interior trim I took to them.
Hi Glenn did the engine light come on when it went to Limp Mode ?
That was quite some time ago but if my memory serves the light did not come on. Just had the total lack of power and ably a few gears available. At first you think the transmission went!
hey glen, love your content. I have a couple questions if you don't mind me asking. did you replace the fluid in the struts? if you've gotten the chance to drive it around, how are the lowering springs? since you mentioned that they seem to be softer, have you noticed better/worse handling or comfort?
So I installed new cartridges so there is no fluid needed - they are sealed units. Regards the springs, I can report a decent ride and great and handling. It’s a little stiff but I thinks that’s the nature of an 80’s sports car! It’s difficult for me to compare to the original set up since the original shocks were blown. The springs seemed to lower the car about an inch.
Thank you for great video! We just did the drivers side control arm on a 2001 330ci. I wish I would have watched your video first because at 17:56 and onwards, you talked about how you first lined up the bushing bolts with the tube dowels and had the knuckle balljoint out while doing that. When we attempted at first, we did with the knuckle ball joint connected. After a little while fiddling with it, we realized the best way to do it was how you mentioned. We were able to align the bushing bolts to the dowels flush, but unfortunately even with new bolts, the top bolt crossed-threaded for some reason. We managed to re-thread the bolt hole using the bolt and tighten really well. The only downside now is if we ever have to do any control arm or/and bush replacement for the drivers side, we may have to always use that same top bolt because of the crossed-threading. A new bolt is likely to just crossed thread again. Thanks again for the great video!
Thank you for the comments. They can be a bit tricky! I’m glad you were able to solve the cross thread issue! Cheers
hello.can you give me the address of the online store where you bought the seat covers . thanks in advance

They complicate it so you have to take it to them to have the work done 🙈 ....Good job man 👊 💪
Thanks. I appreciate the comments. Sometimes it feels like Merc design them to discourage home mechanics!
You the man! Fellow Islander here as well, finally a break from the steaming weather. I have the same issue so I suspect I need to do this rewire as well. My key fobs both stopped working as well just recently...always something with these damn ML's
I appreciate the comment. Yes, there always seems to be something with the ML!
Hi, i tried to do the same, but i did turn the wrong way, and the bolt came off, and i have no more hand brake. Dont seem I'm able to put the bolt in and tighten it anymore. Any suggestions?
I don’t own that car anymore so I can’t even go have a look for suggestions. All I can think is to try to ensure the cable is pushed up from under the car to reattach the nut.
Its a shame the audio is very low. Great job.
Thanks for the tip on moving the coolant overflow tank!
Appreciate the comment - cheers
Can you help me find the part numbers for the clips at 5:06? Mine are broken and I really don't want to have to pay for a whole new armrest assembly when its just the clip. My car has a Schwarz leather interior. Thanks!
I checked and I can’t find a p/n for them. Do you have a helpful BMW dealer close by? They should be able to look up any part number for you.
The center caps seal the deal perfectly.
Thank you
She has a great stance Glen! Can you please share the link for the 20mm hub centric wheel spacers?
Thanks for the comment. I think this should be the link - I ordered them on Amazon. They seem decent quality. www.amazon.ca/dp/B0C5PG2PLH?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 cheers
@@boatinglife1 Appreciate the feedback Glen! Can’t wait to see you take her out.
Yah, I feel pretty stupid. The ‘88 NA my daughter bought came with a set of Z33 wheels. I installed 225/45/17 tires all around. I thought they looked a little narrow, but 7.5” is supposed to be the sweet spot for that tire. I just discovered yesterday that the rear wheels are wider. What a lost opportunity 😢 They had garbage 3mm spacers on the fronts for the center caps. I installed 15mm spacers all around, and I’m really happy with the look. Now to drive the tires off so I can justify getting a pair of 245s for the rears :) I’m liking your look with the gold!
You’ll wear them down soon enough😁.
Love it!!
A HUGE *thank you* for all the detail, including the required tools in the description 👍
