    Don’t get me wrong, this is great music and playing, but it’s in no way original and completely derivative. The later REO was much more progressive and influential. Making hit music is NOT easy, this kind of writing is.

    Wow! I never heard REO Speedwagon from 1971 (never mind earlier). This band's performance in 1971 is very different from later on in the 80s! Thank you for posting this to YT!

    What a great band, and they probably didn't know it. Then the reality that hit records and touring was the way to make money and it was all over.

    Gary never stopped at all, not even 1x to bother with the rest of the wanna b Les Paul players. What a player he was indeed. He and Cronin did make a good team however. Gary was disappointed on what was taking place though within the band, that's why he left.

    And what ever happened to this first bass player who was great ?

  • @sejrec56
    @sejrec56 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I first saw Gary w REO in the high schools playing he had this suede fringe vest flowing with every rock movement on stage, and very colorful flowing shirt. The Epitome of a rock n roll guitarist! He was an inspiration for years even having my brother and I get Les Pauls and fringe vests and colorful shirts , lol

    The REAL REO. Young and fresh, hard rockin' before commercial horseshit ruined their sound. Just my opinion, but this album was and still is, their best output bar none.

    I was very disappointed when Greg Philbin on bass left the band. He was a such a better groove player than his replacement!

    Kevin Cronin saved this band with his better voice and writing talents. But Gary Richrath was a BEAST of a guitarist!!!!!

    In 1978 I was a brand new sales rep at 98FM, THE LOOP, Chicago's #1 rock & roll station. I will tell you all something that most don't know ..... why should ya? But at that time it was still all about these bands being out pounding the bars, hitting the streets, and their people banging on radio station doors and begging them to play their singles. But in the 70's there was one thing that talked the loudest in the industry ...... COCAINE. And that is an absolute fact. I will tell you this, by 78, 79, REO had a lot of money behind them (relatively speaking), and people wanted to get them to the top. And justifiably so ..... they were a great band, with a monumental lead guitar in Richrath and a fantastic lead singer. My point: a REO rep would come into the station back then at least once a month, 3 or 4 times during the day and meet with the on air talent .... and they would give out ounces of cocaine ..... OUNCES! And I watched it happen, so I tell it straight. Now many other band reps did the same, Foreigner, Journey, Heart (Heart reps gave major), and others. But one of our stations legendary DJ's from that time told me flat out, and I think he talks about it in his book, that REO reps sent him to rehab

      Interesting story. Back in 1982 on the High Infidelity Tour they played in a very Unique venue called Castle Farms Music Theater in Charlevoix Mi, very up North of the State. I was friends with a couple local DJ's at the time and they got backstage passes. Instead of the pass saying Charlevoix, it said Charlecaine, which always amused me.

    I loved this reo but alot of people turned off when kevin joined and the music was more pop oriented and ballads!! If kevin didn't join this band might have folded! The label wanted hits and give kevin his dues he made alot of hits!! The best thing u can take out of this is that we got 2 c gary play his guitar!! R.I.P. GARY
