It has been a tough year spearfishing wise in Jersey. Lots of bad weather and poor visability. Seems like the UK has had the same. Our club did manage to hold 3 competitions though. Great video. I'm new to Jersey and looking to try spearfishing this summer. Any recommendations would be appreciated!
Lekker video! I really enjoyed how you ID'd all the fish from big to small. As I am only getting into spearfishing, this helped a lot - Cheers!
@kylereeves7568 thanks. Been watching fish for 25 years. I had a book called A Guide To Common Sea Fishies of Southern Africa as a kid and used to read through that 100s of times.
How deep do you go?
Maxed at 14m. Although most fish shot above 8m. 14 is when I miss the spot in shit vis and land on the sand
@@under_jersea Thanks.
👏👏👍👍
Lekka! Looks tropical, compared to up north.
At least you guys have decent pollock I think. Whenever I see a 3 pound pollock my heart skips a beat 😂
@@under_jersea 🤣
what make of gun are you using?
@@andylewis341 homemade from pine wrapped in fibreglass and epoxy. It works. Bit heavy but great for the shallow stuff. Pain to dive "deep" with which I don't bother to d in Jersey
I felt somewhat cheated as I had recently been to the loo before watching your video……
the videos are sick that dude is a poes
@TheOnlyMrMaxHugo fantastic comment. Title of my next video although youtube might ban it 😄
Were you out off the north coast near devils hole last weekend ? 👏👏👍👍❤❤
Not me I don't think
Great shot on that Bream!
Thanks - I can't say they all go that way!
@@under_jersea Know that feeling 😅🥲
Awesome video!
Thanks - only fish we have in the UK that are bigger than SA...Mullet!😂

We call those small fish ( 2:49 ) gorries in the Eastern Cape.
Thank you very much! Always a good day when I learn a new fish species
Nice dive buddy..please can you share the area you dived in😊
Any point with a bay between the Kei and Port St John's during the sardine run will have similar fish life
I would recommend diving behind the wave line further out so u don’t get surprised by the waves
Yup a good option. Unfortunately all the fish I was seeing were in the surf zone. Further towards the bay was sand which held far fewer fish. Tbh I should have been surfing not diving!
what thickness wetsuit do you use and any tips for starting off in jsy?
Best to start off in a 5mm spearfishing specific wetsuit. You will get cold very quickly in a surfing Wetsuit. Best way to start in Jersey is stick to the shallows. The safest time in Jersey to dive is two hours before low tide to low tide. The current is generally ok. Stick close to the shore in sheltered bays like beuport, petit port, rozel. Stay inside the bays until you are very confident on the current. Good luck
@@under_jersea appreciate this 🙏
👏👏👍👍❤❤
So cool that you got to see thin lipped mullet during breeding. Never seen anything like that myself. Nice vid😊
Yup I think they come to Jersey to breed. We only see them from around August to October
The sea gives and the sea takes... Great vid!
Thank you❤ you have done a few dives in SA I see. Hoping to get back in Feb and visit my dad who lives in St Francis
@@under_jersea Cape st Francis is BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD!!! I might see you there in FEB 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 Wheres the video on surfing the wild coast... KOOOOOOOOKING SURF! Can just imagine ... very jealous. If you ever fancy some spearfishing of surf up north, give me a shout!🤙
@@StaunchIndustriesyup we got a few waves as well. Don't really enjoy watching myself surf 😅
the diving is phenomenal i would to do this but i lack the great depth of view that this water has :/
Exciting place to dive. Lots of different life to see. Nice vid😊
Thanks - very exciting!
What size speargun do you usually use over here(jsy)?
90cm mostly. 75cm for bad visibility. Gun in this clip is a 90cm
SW was loaded with Mack’s last night. Everywhere over Low. A huge feast. School bass within the shoals. And the white bait being pushed onto the rocks. Good video mate 😊
Yup think I need to go later in the day
Have hit a few mackerel around the south/east from the boat the last couple of weeks, bit sporadic, but there's a few around.
Excellent stuff. Really entertaining and educational. It does make me even more keen to get back in after a trip abroad and stupid hours at work. 👍
The water will be warm for your return. 17.8C on my watch last dive.
Nice video mate! Like you say lots of bait but no mackerel atall really! Bass fishing hasn’t been great either.
Yup been waiting for the mackerel. Haven't seen a single one this year. Had one decent bass around 5 pounds and that's it.
Nice day out👌 Try epidemic sound. Music&sound effects for a small price pr month.
👏👏👍👍
Too bad the three turbot weren't bigger. The best food fish out there, if you ask me. Nice video 🙂
Tough to get them them here above 30cm. I haven't seen one bigger than 30cm in 4 years. Every few years we seem to get a few bigger ones that move close enough to shore that we have a chance.
👏👏👍👍still a bit chilly for me 😁
Where is this? When I see Jersey i think New Jersey USA. But is this in the UK?
Yup this is the uk
👏👏👍👍
Thanks 🙏
Everybody’s a spearo these days
…And well done Guy for recording the event for those of us who couldn’t make it. Epic soundtrack good shooting and a touch of comedy. What more could we want.
Thanks Neil - I would have liked to get more footage at the weigh in but only getting around 45 min from the go pro now
👏👏👍👍
really enjoyed that. i have not been out for ages diving. thats probs because fishing as been so good for me on the rod. maybe i will try get out before Close of season this month
You have had some good fish. Tbh it hasn't been a very good season for diving. Not a lot of days with good visability. We have had a lot of cancelled comp dives.
Really love these little video mate. That was one of my favourites ❤ 😊
Thanks. Unfortunately that Pollock wasn't in shore casting range. You guys have been out there on the kayak though!
@@under_jersea nice man. Buzzing for ya tho some lovely fish about in this cideo
Great footage and editing. Nice shot on the Mackerel too.
Thanks Neil 👍
Well amazing my friend ❤❤❤
great spear-bending action 🦾
Yup shaft still seems straight. I guess it's not exactly a 30kg kingfish in New Zealand😅
nice to see some pollock on the reefs - something ive strugled with this yeat to get a run of good ones. let alome more than two over 30cm in a session. Are these in casting range on the SW coast
Yup casting range for sure. Tbh this is the first school I have seen all year. You know this spot well! Pretty sure you have fished it in a couple of your videos!
@@under_jersea oh. 😂 ah that’s great to here. Short lived this inshore pollock these days
Lovely videos all around. Visiting Jersey the following days, and got the car packed with gear as well as 5 years experience from Denmark. In Denmark we mainly use wind to determine potential spots. How do you approach the tide? Is there a tendency towards some spots being better at high/low? Cheers!
Hi - yes same things apply in Jersey. Try and find spots with an offshore wind. Also watch out for swell. In terms of safety the best time to get in is a few hours before low tide and then dive to the low tide. Generally speaking diving around low tide is more productive here as you can find areas where fish group together. The east coast of Jersey is shallow with strong currents. In the north and south you can find deeper water closer to shore with less current.
Let me know the days you will be in Jersey. I might be able to meet you for a dive depending on work. Find me on Instagram if you have it @Under_Jersea
@@under_jersea Thanks for the answer. Got a lovely dive at Greve de Lecq, got a medium size sea bass. Cheers!
@@Oggyoskar well done 👍 nice spot to dive
Nice one. Glad to see the flatfish coming in close with so many spider crab around the north coast
Yup having a slightly better season for flats then the past couple years. Nothing like how it was in 2015.
Lovely footage… 👌
Amazing lovely creature
you'll have to take me out one day...
Sure - although I think you may know these areas better then me😅
@@under_jersea only some i do, I`ll get you out in the boat this year if you fancy
@@andylewis341 sounds great👍 quite flexible this time of year so let me know when
How do you get closer to those fish for a shot next time? I find myself in a lot of similar situations recently!
Sometimes fish are moving and there isn't anything you can do. The 10m plus vis we have been having isn't helping either😅
Hi there, lovely video again… thanks for posting. I’m heading to Jersey this week and will be taking my gear. I’ll be based in St Helier but may have access to a car. I’m not very experienced and can only dive very short periods and shallow. Any tips on where to go? I’m not looking for marks, just general ideas of perhaps where the vis is best and safe for shore diving? Thanks for any advice in advance… Fraser
Hi Fraser - thanks. Wind will be your problem this week! Very strong NE for the week. What I would suggest is you wait for high tide and then try a little bay called Petit Port. It is sheltered from the wind. You get the a few mullet swimming around close to the slip at the high tide. Unfortunately there are no many other spots due to the wind.
@@under_jersea Thanks for the tip, I’m sure it’ll be fun whatever… cheers 😊
Marvellous.
Thanks Neil
Perfect, I will start end of June in Scotland. May I ask- do you have to dive deep in Jersey waters? Planning some holidays and as per my age prefer a bit shallower parts. In my place is a big Pollock, but deep, dark and cold :)
Pollock tend to be a deeper species. Everything else in Jersey you can see in 5m of water of less
@@under_jersea Thank you. This is what I'm looking for.
