Witcher Nerd talks Female Witchers - Lore & Theories
Feeling better from my cold so time to do a lore/theory video. Thought I'd talk about the history of female Witchers across the various canons and discuss a brand new theory I came up with relating to Witcher 1 and how it could tie into Ciri's mutations in Witcher 4.
So the video was copyright struck due to using Hexer footage. I couldn't imagine they'd still be trying to stop it but guess they are. Replaced them with just some pictures and that's all.

She survived the ToG?
@@lastructchure389 Ciri? It would appear so. Same for Adela and Dragonfly. Rayla survived a very modified version although we know basically nothing about what Azar did to the process besides its outcome.
@@tomjones8859 The Witcher games have always been a different story than books so I'm ok with the fact the elder blood decides to become a witcher and can endure the trial of grass because of her inner power. I won't be mad.
Nice its back lol
Eskil protagonist?? Bizarre 😂 only option besides ciri is new character or customizable
In the events of Witcher 3 it is MANDATORY for the story that Geralt helps the other witchers and sorceresses at Kar Morhen to IMPROVE AND MODFY the original Trail of Grasses to the point that it can be used ON ELVES to physically cure them of a shape-change curse. In Witcher 3, if you played it, we all took part and paving the way open for Ciri to take the trial herself and anyone bitching about it now either never played that quest to begin with so they are just bitching because they got triggered, or they IGNORED that part of the story and want to act like Witcher 3 has to deliberately say the words rather than the 3hour long quests tied to the trial of grasses. Either way, anyone who played the witcher 3 already experienced why Ciri can become a witcher and why there was a ending to the game where Ciri becomes a witcher 3. So yea, if anyone can survive a new and improved Trial of grasses based on Geralt's help in Witcher 3? it would be the princess of Time and Space...Ciri
Great, level-headed and knowledgeable Subscribed
I don’t remember the canon lore saying that adults can’t survive the trial. We had Uma survive what I thought was the most dangerous part of the trial in TW3. What would you say about the argument that she couldn’t go through the trials as an adult?
@@rafegraves1453 Uma only under went the first part of the trial as it would sorta... "soften him up" for what Yen needed to undo the curse. I believe it was actually the safest part as it was more to get the body ready for the main mutations. As for Ciri undergoing it as an adult... I speculate it could be a weaker version of the trials creating ultimately weaker Witchers but with Ciri's other abilities it wouldn't make much of a gameplay difference. Alternatively it could be the Elder Blood or maybe they found a way to make the mutations safer. We'll have to see, but they've said it'll be set "a few years after Witcher 3" so development of a new mutation process feels more unlikely. Not impossible though. Not sure how well that answers your question
@@tomjones8859 The way of the Trials is forgotten, and no one can perform them anymore. While they aren’t completely lost, they are certainly no longer understood. How many test subjects would need to die to perfect the process again, especially for women? Arguing that Elder Blood could help her feels like a cheap trick. Elder Blood and destiny prevented Ciri from becoming a Dryad in Brokilon-why would it help now? There’s no guarantee of surviving the Trials-only 3 out of 10 boys survived. How could you suddenly make it safe? Witcher potions are inherently poisonous, and they called the one in Trailer poison to explain it. I also don’t believe Elder Blood can be "lost"-if it could, the bloodline would be gone. Ithlinne’s Prophecy is unfinished business, right?
The entire quest chain for setting up the trials was establishing, narratively, that they were modifying and IMPROVING the trial of grasses. The only part of the trial of Grasses Ciri needs is to take the physical enhancements...not the magical infusion that does most of the killing
Ciri needs her Witcher 3 style boots back
Love those boots lol. I’m sure there will be many boots to choose from but it would be cool to get those back.
'Stromford' (in a Nordic language, but it for surely isn't either Finno-Ugric or Slavic) translates into English as 'Stream Ford', not 'Storm Ford'. Blood and Wine, of course, chose to use Danish accents for (the English language localisation of) a story which otherwise references Languedoc, so there's nothing unusual in the developers choosing an improbable accent. Notable that the peasants here are wearing finely woven, well finished clothes with lots of high quality fur and without tears, dirt or patches. Of course these are festival clothes, they will be the best they have, but unless the devs are getting sloppy these are pretty prosperous peasants (they also look well fed). Definitely agree it seems to be the location shown on the coin. Armour very clearly leaves her throat exposed; that's not particularly great, but I can see why they chose it. The monster model appears to be based on a Kikimore, but it clearly has a humanoid face so it is not a pure insectoid, as (I think) Kikimores are canonically supposed to be. So this may be some (cursed?) hybrid. Also, the name they gave it (yes, they did give one, but I too forget it) may be a particular name for this individual, rather than a general name for the species (for example, in the first game, 'Nadir' is the name of a particular Drowned Dead). Canonically, I think that being a Source should enable her to use substantially more powerful magic while drawing on the Force, rather than actual new spells. Consider Pavetta in A Question of Price. Signs are fairly low-grade magic which Witchers are taught, possibly in conjunction with the Trial of the Grasses. If Ciri has done the training and been through the Trial, she can do signs. No canonical problem with that. Related, is cutting off her connection to the Source something which Ciri can actually, canonically, do? How? She may have been in denial about her powers for years, she may have been refusing to even try to use them, but that doesn't mean they've gone away. Even if she truly believes, and tells everyone, that they have. This doesn't feel like much of a retcon to me. In any case, in the Witcher III, Ciri has been jumping around in space and time, so she's already got her powers back right there. I really disagree with you about Nilfgard winning! Mind you, in a war like this, it isn't necessary for either side to win.
Hi, thought I'd try and answer a few of your questions. To start with the peasants clothes, I admittedly didn't really noticed that. I think in fantasy costume designers tend to give peasants more detailed outfits to keep them looking interesting at the cost of historical accuracy. Probably oversight or intentional ignorance to keep outfits from looking to plain. While the monster does seem to be based on the Kikimore design from Netflix Witcher it doesn't match the CDPR design. In both Witcher 1, B&W and Gwent they are 4 legged with no face or even eyes from the look of it. Could be a Hybrid or Cursed like you said but it does appeared to be new so speculation can only go so far unfortunately. I do thought agree that it's name is probably a unique name and not the species name. Being a Source would definitely make Ciri more power than most mages (at the cost of it being hard to control) but how they are working that into gameplay will have to be seen because mages are insanely powerful and I don't think they'd let us go that far outside of maybe some scripted sequences. Signs are low grade, but Ciri still couldn't cast them. Lambert even doubted Ciri was a Source because over her about 2 years of training she still couldn't cast a single one. Re-reading that second of Blood of Elves (Chapter 3, about page 90) Triss explains that a Source has no control over their power and are more like a transmitter so no matter how much Ciri tries she won't be able to cast Aard. However at some point she won't even try, like she's daydreaming and suddenly she'll cause a shockwave that'll destroy a house. Training obviously stabilises that but as I previously said, doubt we'll see it outside of scripted sequence. About Ciri did cut off her connection to "the Power" as it's put in the books to refer to spell casting. In Time of Contempt Ciri used to power to save the unicorn Ihuarraquax but as the fire she drew on to cast the spell tried to draw her to the dark side she yelled "I don't want that power! I don't want it! I relinquish it" which is then followed by to beings, I can't remember who but likely other unicorns, discussing if they should help her. One says in response to Ciri being able to harness magic "It will not be able to use it. Never. It relinquished it. It relinquished the Power. Utterly. The Power disappeared. It is most curious..." It's also referenced in W3 during the quest "Payback" right at the end after stealing the horses if you say "Gifts can be renounced..." although she does respond with "It's not that easy. I tried once, remember?" so maybe they retconned this... My current theory as why Ciri can cast spells again (besides a retcon) is that the Trial of the Grasses, which are meant to grant magic to non-magic users, reawakened that. My thought's on Nilfgaard winning are more that most people would have done the Radovid assassination quest and not let Dijkstra win, and that it lines up slightly better with future cannon. It's not perfect but considering the last game ends with someone winning it would be odd for them to go with a 3rd option. I could so that being that Nilfgaard holds everything south of the Pontar rather than the Yaruga but I also think the world politic being reset back to Nilfgaard being south of the Yaruga means they are restored back to the beginning of the Blood of Elves once again. Nilfgaards victory could lead to some interesting stories including a potential "fall of Rome" kinda thing or of them being stretched too thin and crumbling apart. Redania was meant to more or less reestablish the status quo with returning the former boarders (although I assume they'd keep Keadwin and Temeria) so I find that a less interesting prospect to explore compared to Nilfgaards efforts to erase Northern culture, language and religion and replace it with their own and how people react and push back against that. Hope this answers some of your questions. I'll be real, didn't really know what to say about the location name and accents although I thought Toussaint used French-ish while Nilfgaard as a whole uses Dutch? I'm terrible with accents though.
@@tomjones8859 Regarding peasant's clothes: clothes of the peasants in Velen and White Orchard (and even Tousaint) in Witcher III look a lot dirtier and more distressed than this. The ealdorman of White Orchard, who must be one of the richest peasants, wears a shirt with ragged sleeves, for example. I *think* the reason the kikimores in Witcher 1 are quadripedal is simply that the Aurora engine did not have rigging for six legged skeletons (yes, I know CDPR did an enormous amount of work on Aurora, but I've built things with both the Neverwinter Nights version and the Witcher 1 version, and they were pushing that tired old engine to its absolute limits). It's the fact that the 'thing' in the trailer has a humanoid face that makes me think that it is not a true kikimore, but something cursed. Nilfgard (in Witcher III) certainly uses something based on Old Low German but I hadn't recognised it as Dutch, I thought it was something they'd just made up! You could be right, though. The problem with the 'Nilfgard wins' ending is that if Ciri is a witcher, the empire is likely in the middle of a civil war -- either Emhir is dead and has no successor, or at best he has been publicly spurned by his heir apparent which has to cause a political crisis. I mean, I think if I were Ciri with the choice between being emperor of a militaristic, over-expanded and politically unstable empire or being an itinerant pest control operative, the latter does sound like the more sensible choice; But it leaves the empire even more of a powder keg than it was before. Anyway, exciting times. I cannot wait to see what CDPR comes up with! Have you seen @glassfish777's work on recovering the 'Yennefer betrays the lodge' sequence at the end of Witcher III? @xLetalis has a video on it. It would be SO INTERESTING to know whether this will become canon!
@@simonbrooke4065 True enough about the peasant clothing. I did recently watch an interview PC Gamer did and they did say Stormford is located far north so maybe they want to try and make even the peasants of the rich nation (assuming it's Kovir or Poviss) look fancier than the other peasants. Admittedly though that would be a weird logic so probably just an error on their part. They also did say that the monster was new, stating it's Serbian inspired (I think Kikimores are more Ukrainian/Russian), feeds on fear and plays with their minds victims minds. Hoping cursed honestly and they talk a lot about the "mist" in interviews so there might be more there. Also Kikimores do appear in Blood and Wine in the quests A Knight's Tale, La Cage au Fou and a couple others according to the wiki and use the 4 legged W1 design so it seems to be their interpretation of it. It doesn't really match the spidery shape the books describe but as you said it could have been an engine limitation and they have just maintained it for consistency. To be fair a Nilfgaard civil war they could build to for a sequel could be cool, but on a lore front Emhyr retires from the throne at some point after 1290 and dies at some point before 1301 according to Time of Contempt so Redania couldn't have won as he gets killed when the nobles turn on him for failing. From a story side, as I said, I'd like the status quo not to reset with Nilfgaard's lose, although not everything would return to how it was before like Temeria and Kaedwen so there is still narrative potential around those regions and their new rulers. Also, to be honest a story on Nilfgaard falling apart would be something I'd be very interested in playing. The outcome of the war is probably going to be the most controversial part of making this sequel because of just how big the ramifications of it have to be but I don't think any ending can line up with the future cannon established because... well the books never planned for there to be a third war. As for Yen betraying the Lodge, I hadn't heard of it although I do watch xLetalis and Witcher George content every now and then so I'll give it a look. Can't wait to learn more about this and I'll try and do some follow ups when we get enough substantial material to make a video on.
first :)
Didn't have much to say about this one. So much so I forgot to do my normal pinned comment. I liked the expansion out into places beyond the Known World and it was fun that the comic Of Flesh and Flame actually had Geralt and Dandelion travel to Ofir and explore that area. Makes me hope we'll see somewhere beyond the Known World in the upcoming Witcher trilogy. Maybe the Far North, Zerrikania, Ofir or even Haakland, Zanguebar, maybe even the Second Continent depending on where it is in the timeline. The possibilities. Gaunter O'Dimm was such a fun villain but I definitely don't find him as terrifying as some people. Still though, while I'd like to see him again some other time I hope it's only once or twice. Overuse him and he'll lose his mystic. Olgierd von Everec is a amazingly written character and I loved following his story with a great history and Neon Knight did a great breakdown on him in his Every Choice GERALT Would Make series. It's great seeing Shani again and I'm looking forward to seeing her again in the Witcher 1 Remake and Iris' part of the story is one of my favorite parts of Witcher 3. While it's not my favorite Witcher story, I've always preferred the more common problems and jobs of a Witcher, Blood and Wine is definitely my favorite of the expansions (next to Price of Neutrality).
The ending of Witcher 3. Lotta big stuff here. Generally I'll say this, the Wild Hunt themselves are the biggest disappointment in the game I think, which is such a shame. I realised that I really wanted one or two moments that actually acknowledged their motivations. If Ciri isn’t sacrificed then an entire planet of people will die. I’d have liked a moment, maybe before Gearlt and Ciri arrive at Bald Mountain during their ride through Kaedwen where they talk about this. Another thing is that compared to the previous games Geralt doesn’t get to talk to the main villain or any of their lackeys before the boss fight. Comparing Imerith’s fight with the Professor's shows just how much personality the Professor has as he talks about how Witcher’s failed and how they need to be improved while Imerith just talks about how he’ll kill Geralt and get Ciri. Same goes for the King of the Wild hunt, who talks to Geralt a couple times in the 1st game and his conversations with Geralt are much more interesting compared to the barely 3 minutes of conversation they have in this game which boils down to “I will kill you and get Ciri, and I know something you don’t”. As I was writing this Witcher George did a video talking about how their role was cut down so I guess that explains part of it. Novigrad was apparently going to be partly destroyed and he even talks a bit about my next point. A similar thing goes for the assassination of Radovid. Redania is portrayed as pretty bad and while Nilfgaard isn’t exactly shown to be people’s favourites there isn’t much explained as to what the pros and cons between these realms are. Nilfgaard is pro slavery, has equal rights for non-humans and women, they remove the local population and replace them with their own people, they replace most of the culture of the places they take over and would in theory replace their language and gods over time, and women’s right to abortion. Radovid would seemingly bring back the old borders (in line with Witcher 2’s ending, pre Northern Invasion), not interfere with people’s culture and so on, however bring in strong superstition of magic users and non-humans. When it came to the ending I originally wanted to have the bad ending edited in as first, then transition into the bitter sweet ending to reveal she is alive. However when looking at Nilfgaard’s future emperors we see Emyr granted the title of coadjutor of the Empire to Peter Evertsen at some point after 1290 and would die at some point before 1302. This means he can’t step down from the throne to Ciri before this and we know that Jan Calveit became Emperor in 1301 so it removes my favourite ending from canon. Further evidence for the Good ending being cannon is the comic set after the game which implies this although it doesn’t say who won the war, however as with Radovid or Dijkstra winning leads to Emyr dying around 1264 so also can’t be cannon. Most of the comics are set in the period between Witcher 3 (1273) and Blood and Wine (1275) but an interesting fact is that Philippa Eilhart dies around this point or in 1276 as she’s burnt in Vizima. Just an interesting fact about the reason for the hunts but it’s made clear Radovid started this out of his hatred for mages and the events of Witcher 2 however in the books and Encyclopaedia Maxima Mundi, it says it started over a passage of Ithlinne’s Prophecy about The Destroyer who would arise from Elder Blood and hatred towards magic started by Archpriest Willemer who was the one to capture, torture and kill Eilhart. This game generally retconned a fair amount of things such as the fact the Wild Hunt can’t travel between the world freely, only during the solstice when the boundaries between worlds are weakest. Ciri also shouldn’t be powerful enough to stop the White Frost as Elder Blood becomes more powerful with every generation that passes. The White Frost itself isn’t a primordial force spreading across the multiverse but rather the planet's unstable orbit leading to global cooling. I think those are the main things but it does bug me, like how Skellige is kinda located around where southern England is yet it's portrayed like Norway. Oh, nearly forgot them saying that at 06:20:45 Geralt fought Eredin’s projection in that dimension, but that’s a reference to Witcher 1 and the final fight there, however that was an illusion and hence why people who were dead could help and other with no magical abilities could appear. Besides all that… not really got much else. Kinda wish there’d been more downtime during travelling like talking to the Nilfgaardians on the one day ride to Vizima about the war and their lives at 01:26:27 or with Ciri around 04:55:57 or maybe some time at sea around 06:32:11. Anyway, onto Hearts of Stone
This part was quite fun to edit once I got into the swing of it. Something I realised was that we have never seen anything like the Crones in the Witcher universe. I feel like it could have very easily not fitted into the world but just about is able to. With the Bloody Baron I generally felt like Geralt wouldn't really care about the Baron's relationship. He wouldn't like him but generally wouldn't care to give out his opinion. I tried to take some inspiration from A Grain of True and did go back to refilm some stuff to better fit Geralt's personality at the end of the books (where he doesn't care about anyone other than his friends) and even cut a section at 02:25:55 where Geralt voiced his opinion on who's to blame because I didn't feel like it was an in character response. It was a middle ground where the Barron's background is explained but Geralt remains neutral. I decided I wanted to have something which helped show Geralt's journey to Novigrad with him coming across Letho and with the Ofier game I took a scene from Heart of Stone so that the Flaming Rose could have some dialogue and I could get a nice reference to one of my favorite Witcher game character, Siegfried of Denesle. This is more of a question than a option but does anyone know why Skelliga is so snowy? It's more or less halfway between Velen and Toussaint with the former being based on Poland's environment and the latter is based on norther Italy so shouldn't Skelliga be more like Luxembourg or maybe the South West of England (Isle of Wight)? I can't remember how its described in the books but if it was further north I'd understand it more easily but maybe its something to do with currents or maybe Sapkowski just isn't very good with geography.
Now we begin Witcher 3. Hot take: this is my least favorite of the games. It's in no way bad, I just don't like the retcons it makes to the lore but I'll get to those later. These as it will become apparent this game is insanely long with Act 1 being longer than any other Witcher part in this saga. With only a 12 hour limit I decided to make the prologue in White Orchard and Vizima its own thing. Like with Witcher 2 this footage seems to be more stuttering than my flied version so I can only conclude its TH-cam's compression which is annoying but I can't do much about besides rerecording the whole video at a higher frame-rate. My general thoughts of this area are mixed. In part I feel it's too long and has very little of value. If the Griffin encounter at 00:21:04 was removed and Gaunter O'Dimm said that Yennefer was heading to Vizima, then skipped to 00:58:19 nothing of plot value will be lost. However, I understand the point was probably to reintroduce people to what it's like to be a Witcher and establish for people who's intro to this series (like me) can understand what Witchers do. Kinda of an interesting note but it's not exactly clear when Witcher 2 ended. Based on dialogue in the Roache path of the game, Chapter 1 ends in either August or September and the opening of Witcher 3 says it May which is an eight month time difference. Now if Chapter 2 and 3 take place over a month each then Triss saying they split up six months ago that would work. However Matters of Conscience is set not long after the game with Triss gone when Geralt would be on his way to Nilfgaard to rescue Yen. Then Geralt and Vesemir did the event of the Killing Monsters trailer and comic happen six months before the game. I've never understood why he wasn't continuing south and instead went all the way to Velen when he knows she's in Nilfgaard, specifically the capital city. They seem obsessed with using Temeria and I feel like I remember that they said they were considering setting the next Witcher game in Temeria as well but the Witcher 1 remake is scratching that itch. (Although I don't remember where I saw that so don't quote me on it). Generally not much more to say about this part. It's a simple set up to everything that will be going on, establishes the political situation and some of the consequences from the last game and shows off what it's like to be a Witcher.
Witcher 1 is probably my favourite of the Geralt trilogy. I really like the exaggerated character designs and I actually prefer Geralt being uglier. The leather stuffed armour is probably the best armour set made in any of the games with its focus on being almost 'special agent'. All the things he needs are visible on him such as the potions and all the weapons he carries and the satchel. The game does have some retcons such as Alvin gaining some of his power from the Elder Blood but being a boy that shouldn't be possible. Another is only Geralt having the "unusual eyes" and making Ada younger. Piecing the timeline together on this was really difficult. Geralt joins the group that causes him to lose his memories on December 22 or 23rd 1270 and this game begins that same year. We also know time travel wasn't involved. We also know Witcher 2 is set half a year later in August or September of 1271 but those numbers can't add up. I decided that because the month isn't mentioned in my recording I'd stick with my original dates and we'll have to see if CDPR changes the month or not. I went Order for two reasons, first is Rayla's death is written for that path in each one. Having her considered a friend of Geralt's. The other is that the pivotal point is leaving a bunch of villagers to fend for themselves in a big battle. I think Geralt and the end of the books would leave them but as this version has gone through that arch I decided he'd help. Bringing flashbacks from Witcher 3 was done mainly to add some new visuals and have slightly more value to Geralt regaining his memories from the Lady of the Lake.
I really enjoy this game. Out of all the games (not including expansions) this one is 3rd place but it and Witcher 1 are pretty neck and neck in terms of how much I like them, although for different reasons. I love how much the politics of the Witcher world are examined and it's one of my favorited things in the series. While I'll miss Geralt's more ugly face which I think is more book accurate, I kinda get why it was changed. I think though it makes him being considered a "freak" less relevant as because... well... he be sexy now. Regardless I enjoy it's more complex examination of the lore as well and really liked jumping between multiple characters to get a more full understanding of what's going on and wish they kept this for the W3 as I think it allows them to tell a more complex narrative without Geralt always need to be caught up on what everyone else is doing. The choice to open on the Witcher 1 ending was mainly due to it keeping the story more in focused the King Slayer's rather than splitting it. It also makes it fun with it passing into Witcher 3 leading to this one showing off all the graphical changes throughout the trilogy. I decided to put in the trailer (00:08:20) which establishes the main kingdoms as with such a heavy focus on politics and geopolitics and setting up some elements of the plot such as how the boarders will change by the end of the game. This also seemed like the best opportunity to insert this as it explains a little more about what's going on before getting into the thick of the battle. The reason I went Scoia'tael came down basically to two reasons. First is that Geralt takes the path of least resistance. He doesn't care about the cause, or at least won't take a stand on it, and instead it's because they will go to Aedirn now rather than wrapping things up locally first. Second is that it puts Geralt a little more on the "good guy" side which is nice for the protagonist as he's protecting this new society rather than helping crush it. Lastly is that I feel like out of the two options this one is better for a single playthrough and helps more with the next game as Philipa gets a lot of attention as well as the Lodge of Sorceresses. Fun fact: On the Roach path in Chapter 1 we actually here the month the end of the chapter is set in. It's Lammas which covers August and half of September. Geralt does say it's been half a year since W1 started which doesn't work if W1 is supposed to begin in 1270. On the Kingslayer wiki it says W1 ends in November of 1270 while W2 begins in April but this doesn't like up however until I played that section after my recording to get Henselt's footage for Chapter 2 and noticed the dialogue. All I could really do would be saying that W1 has either longer jumps between chapters such as between 1 and 2, as well as 2 to 3. This isn't the only timeline issue, like this game confirming it's set 6 years after 1268 but the year is 1271 while Roach says 1268 was 5 years ago. CDPR seems to be bad at maths. I believe that at 05:32:47 the comet in the sky is actually the Wild Hunt. This is because in the books, like in Lady of the Lake a comet appears in the sky visible from Temeria or Redania all the way down to Nilfgaard and in the North they believe it to be the Wild Hunt. It could just be a comet but it's visible all through chapter 2 and 3 just like how the one in the books lingered in the sky for a week or more (I can't exactly remember). Roach is such a bro. I love him and how he kinda just gets Geralt. It was also great seeing Siegfried again and hearing all his plans. I do find it odd that after being given their own land Radovid dismantled them and replaced them with the less well equip and less well trained Witcher Hunters leading to him losings the whole military arm of a huge religion to be replaced by hunters who wouldn't really fight on the front line. I've head cannoned that the reason for this is because Siegfried wouldn't let the order be used to hunt innocent people and so, proving to be a threat, he dismantled them and now the Grand Master is forming a behind the lines gorilla fight against the Witch Hunters and Redanina Army, but that's just my fan theory with no evidence behind it. The reason for putting Ciri's story at the end was mainly to hype up W3 however I do think it highlights how W2 into W3 doesn't flow as nicely into each other compared to W1 and W2. Geralt and Triss set off for the capital city of Nilfgaard only for about a month later the two of them to have split up while Geralt hunts monsters in Temeria with Vesimir until about 6 months later when Yen contacts Geralt to meet in Willoughby (which might have been the Outskirts from W1). Why did Geralt travel west instead of south? No idea. War didn't stop him last time but this time he just took a major hiatus and I'm not sure why... Anyway, onto the final game, and it's looking like a long video. Might even have to be a two partter!
He has returned
This is personally my favourite Witcher game in it's narrative, writing and acting. I really consider it the one where (if you care more for plot than gameplay) it's the Witcher game you should start with. I really hope they do more of these set in parts of the world we haven't seen such as one set in Nilfgaard during the early stages of conquest or following how Emhyr/the Usurper became Emperor or even one that has you play as a general that builds up to the Slaughter of Cintra on the Nilfgaardian side. This could also be a cool way of seeing places beyond the boarder like Ofir and Zerrikania with Pretty Kitties invasion of the desert nation and just generally being more risk taking away from the mainline series. Anyway, onto my notes. A general thing I did was try to cut out a lot of inclusion of monsters where possible. This means outside of Mahakam and Angren the only monsters encountered are a couple of Ghouls and a Manticore (I think) as the first encounter with Ghouls in Lyria is cut and encounter with the Gravehag and Leshy were also removed to keep this. I did this because in the books it's mentioned that monsters are becoming incredibly rare and often aren't much of a problem anymore. Thronebreaker is clearly set over a long time and even short distance travelled in gameplay amount to days of travel in universe but I still wanted them to be very infrequent and I carry this into all of the future parts. In the books Queen Meve is described as having greyish white hair but a young face for her age, and light green eyes. Her eye appear more blue or grey in the game and obviously she is given a more youthful appearance most of the time. Personally I would have preferred her hair was greying a bit in a similar way to Reynard as I believe they are roughly the same age but it's more of a small nit-pick. For her personality she appears to be quite violent and aggressive at times but sympathetic and caring at others. I generally tried to use the phrase "she ruled with an iron hand, not fist" as my point of reference. Sympathetic towards non-humans and cares deeply for her subjects and people, hates traitors, will sacrifice others to get what she wants. A few of her more brutal moments like leaving a crashed wagon of her men in Mahakam and hanging a cowardly traitor got cut for time and pacing but it does make her a little more kind hearted and caring with few moments of brutality. However between the Northern rulers she is considered the most wise and cunning of them so I tried to keep her smart and understanding. [Spoilers] When Black Rayla leaves around 02:47:22 I was struck with a question as to where this falls in the timeline for her. Rayla is captured in Aedirn by Elves who cut off her hand, mutilated her face, and due to the stress her hair turned white and she became White Rayla. However she can stay with you all the way until the wars end. I can only assume she is supposed to get captured after leaving Meve's army in Mahakam as is captured as she goes back into Aedirn on her way to a pass by the Pontar River towards Redania. Then again, in Witcher 1, despite going by the name White Rayla and being described as scared in the journal she appears as she does in Thronebreaker. This is because her model was made when the game was supposed to be a prequal not sequel however perhaps the plan on retconning her scars into never existing or maybe this was just a slight oversight on the structure of Thronebreaker. Also her line at 02:45:18 about non-humans staying in their lands is either a writing error or an in-character error as non-humans only have Mahakahm with Dol Blathana likely not established yet or only just established as Nilfgaard just took Aedirn. Only the Dwarves and Werebbubs primarily live in Mahakam while the rest live in mountains that are part of human lands. They don't really have any lands for them to live in. As I said, could be a writing error or logical error that Rayla chooses not to consider. In Angren I played around with the order of some side quests before confronting Caldwell to try and start having the tone become more and more grim before getting into Ysgith helping to bring that grim tone that it was going for translate in the video as I think while it's nailed in the game, the cutscenes alone don't manage to bring in as much of that tone for some reason. At 07:34:55 I switched the Scoia'tael encounter and the encounter where the Rivian's slaughter the Nilfgaardian prisoners so that the line "for the queen had grown weary of choosing between two evils" to fit with the fact that you don't make any more actual choices after that point. In the games order you get the line that she is done choosing and then have to choose again. Kinda thematic but I think would have worked better if she still had to choose in the sicario the line was brought up in. I move the epilogues on all the characters to before the reveal that it's Borch (the Golden Dragon) telling the story as that felt more like the proper ending moments and the epilogues on each felt a little tacked on in my opinion. The choice to end with the Witcher 2 flashback is basically so there is a little more lead into the "what the next part" kinda feel. Show the story isn't over and a new one is just beginning. Another reason is because the opening of Witcher 1 feels strange when it has a 5 minute backstory to it only to transition into an opening narration briefly explaining the last few years of the world. If you watched them back to back you'd still experience it but I assume most people would watch more in segments. Anyway, those are my notes. I hope you enjoyed the video.
For the saga I will explain certain editing choices and RPG decisions along with a few behind the scenes details for achieving certain effects. [Spoilers below] The reason for borrowing footage was simply because I didn't have the Rogue Mage for Gwent and despite enjoying Thronebreaker the standalone Gwent game I didn't realize enjoy. The reason for blending two together was because the only YT version I could find cut into a few scenes too early or late cutting some off. The other one with, in my opinion, better editing (not trying to bash the other person) only had Polish subtitles. I blended the two together and used the Polish one to fill in some of the visual gaps which is why you can occasionally see flashes of it in the text. I had thought of placing the Witcher 3 opening comic after Side Effects where I could remove the edit that cut out Emyrir however tonely didn't match up. Even though Witcher 1 is getting a remake I will likely keep this version the default. It fits the feel and I think Lambert looks better in this version (I think he looks older than Eskal in W3 despite Lambert being the youngest). Also I think Geralt almost looks perfect. If it was that face and hair with W2 body and the Hexer green eyes and he'd be perfect. The reason for going with the bad ending for the Price of Neutrality was three reasons. The first is I think it helps set up the Witchers who try to stay out of things and add more baggage to Geralt's encounter with Renfrie later in his life as he breaks that neutrality. The second is the title as we don't see the price if they don't stay neutral. Third is that I think it's a good tone setter and to not expect the right or good outcomes to be guaranteed in these videos. Some of the years tied to these books are speculative on my part as we don't get clarification for all of them. Showing Gaunter O'Dimm here was because I not only wanted him to appear much earlier but was because it shows some of the history of Nilfgaard and Emyrir as well as tying to A Question of Price. The Gwent story with Geralt and Dandelion was placed here for two reasons. First is I'm not sure where it would fit outside of here besides maybe between Witcher 2 and 3 as there is roughtly a year gap between the two games. The main reason for putting it here is because I think he's not very well acted, directed or written in Side Effects and in my opinion makes the flaws of his personality not funny but instead makes him kinda a dick. I think in the rest of Witcher 1 he's written well enough but just not very well performed. Side Effects is stated to be a year after the curse was lifted off Ada however people talk about the first invasion of Nilfgaard and the Battle of Soden Hill. In the Witcher one they changed when the curse was lifted to (I assume) make Ada younger for the first game. She is probably about 31 in the Witcher 1 but based on CDPRs timeline she'd be 19 which better fits how she is written and acts in the game. I presume in the remake it will be placed in the correct year if they remake this expansion which might get put into an updated part 1. I'm not sure yet. Overall I think this one helps give more lore and context before the Second Invasion even if it's story isn't that interesting. Also the man at 01:41:12 would become Ramsmeat in the Witcher 1 which is fun.
