TIPS, TRICKS & an OVERVIEW of our 110 tap MAPLE SYRUP operation using our Smoky Lake Dauntless
I need to try this. I just chew tobacco about 2 or 3 times a week. I pay over $23.00 for 3 oz. It’s like gold. I’ve tried growing tobacco for my pipe but I’m very particular and it takes a long time to age pipe tobacco.
I will say that it was really easy to grow Virginia Gold, and we live in a pretty crazy climate not conducive to growing tobacco. But I watered it and gave it some fertilizer and it grew non stop! Then I hung it in my garage for 8 weeks. It was so easy. Then mix the syrup into it and there ya have it. Thanks for watching, let us know how it goes!
Those donuts look sooooo good!!
They were! Thanks for watching!!!!!!!
Very cool
Thanks man and thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. With prices today, I'm definitely going to try.
It’s well worth the effort. We live in a place not at all conducive to growing tobacco and I can’t believe (with only some fertilizer) how easy it was to grow. So we grew it and dried it and used this recipe to make it and now I have it for free (we have a few videos on how I grow it). And don’t have to drive to the gas station to get more! As long as you don’t live in the arctic, it’s really worth trying in my opinion. Thanks for watching and good luck!!
Thanks for showing your system, and congrats on far surpassing the 100 subscriber mark! I just added one more for ya :) I stumbled across this looking at vacuum filter systems- cylinder vs square.
Thanks for taking the time to write this! We really appreciate and we’ll subscribe to you as well! TH-cam is a grind but like they say, “it only takes one”. Thanks for watching-fingers crossed it’s a great maple season!!!!!
@SweetMapleRidge Indeed... I'm hoping it's a snowball rolling down hill... and I just got the ball rolling lol! Im glad I saw this, the CDL was on my list as an option for this spring!
@@UptoSomethingOutdoors just don’t give up, you’ll get there! As for the vacuum filter…. We just bought a filter press from Smoky Lake Maple Products. We’ll probably do a review of it at some point once the season is over. But we can’t take another year of the vaccuum filter. I’m sorry to say but it’s the worst. Thanks again for watching!
Thanks for sharing 👍 No need to use plastic btw
Of course! True, and thanks for watching my friend!!!!
Press it into a plug and it will keep better, reduces oxidation.
I'll definitely try that next time! Thanks for watching and commenting, we really appreciate it!!
I think you need to rinse your tobacco before flavoring it. To decrease the amount of nicotine. Straight up like that really packs a punch!
It definitely packs a punch! Thanks for watching, and every time we make it it will get a little better. Happy thanksgiving!
❤ heck yea , man I wish I had one lol
Some chew or tobacco plants!? Thanks for watching!!!!!
We always chawed the straight stuff no candy flavor for me.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe plastic or wood tote. To much car board smells like dookie this day and age
That’s a good point! Thanks for watching and happy thanksgiving!
So does the leaves have to he nicotine ?
They do and this definitely turned out amazing. We couldn’t believe how easy it was to grow tobacco, and to dry it. Makes me wonder why everyone who likes chewing tobacco doesn’t do this! Thanks for watching!!!!!
Love this cooking video!
Thanks and thanks for always watching our shenanigans!!!!!!!! Happy thanksgiving!!!!!!!
I can’t wait for summer to make some pickles!
Us too! We’re happy to have you as a viewer! Happy thanksgiving!
I always thought these were just decorative, pretty cool!
They make the most delicious pumpkin pie ever. Try our recipe and let us know what you think. Thanks for watching, and happy thanksgiving!
Very cool.. ty. We will try this next year ❤
Great! Thanks for watching :)
I bet that tastes good
It’s amazing. The smell is incredible too. The best part is it’s from our garden and I can’t believe how easy tobacco is to grow. Thanks for watching!
I noticed you didn't add any calcium carbonate, will the nicotine still be absorbed with out this?
I don’t know anything about that but I feel like the nicotine definitely is absorbed, at least for me. It’s fairly strong (for someone who doesn’t dip anymore). Does calcium carbonate help make it absorb more effectively? Thanks for watching!
Yes. The dips especially and some chews use a very basic compound that helps with nicotine absorption.
I've been making kombucha for years. *do not* disinfect with bleach as the residue from that process will harm the scoby bacterias. Use boiling water to disinfect the brewing vessel. Keep any inorganic chemicals as far away as possible from the kombucha process. If you reuse the vessel immediately after removing the brewed batch then no sterilization has to be performed as the incoming sub 4 ph and scoby will quickly elininatr any small amount of pathogenic bacteria that may have crept in during that short time.
Thank you so much for the info!
How to make kombucha without scoby
Good question, you need SCOBY to get it started. It’s cheap through Amazon! Thanks for watching!
What does the salt do?
I understand it helps to break the sweetness of the molasses and reduced apple cider. You can’t taste it and you could probably leave it out. Thanks for watching as always!
Salt is a flavor enhancer and to most people makes just about anything tastes better. People put salt in bread dough, pasta water, coffee, beer, oatmeal etc
Any chance you can recreate Cope Longcut Straight?
😂😂😂😂😂I wish!!!!!!!! Thanks for watching my friend!
I think they ferment it
You could use something like a small box, I was thinking like a soap travel box. Pack it in there and you can make plug tobacco, like the old timers used to carry. Do you remember the old CUP brand plug tobacco?
I don’t but I’ve watched other TH-cam videos where people have made a square wooden box and packed tobacco in there and left it for a few weeks to turn it into plug. Would definitely be something good to try!
Hell, now I want a chaw...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I started out at 13 , I chewed beechnut and was told they use licorice to flavor it
Very possible! It’s hard to find chewing tobacco anymore, at least where we are. I don’t use it very much at all (I used to several years ago before I quit totally) but I do like it!
I'm from country in KY , northern KY 100 South of Cincinnati
Shelby county was a big tobacco growing country but its slowly dwindled down since the 80 s
It’s delicious that’s for sure. Thanks for watching my friend!
Another thing about the SCOBY is while SCOBYs need care, they’re more resilient than you might think. Even if they dry out slightly or are stored in less-than-ideal conditions, they can often be revived with proper feeding and care. And give them to friends so they can make kombucha too!
SCOBYs are pretty cool! Thanks for watching!!!!!
So how did it taste?
It taste great! Just like Levi Garrett! Thanks for watching!!!!!!

How do you drain the pipe? In 900’ of 3/4” pipe you’ll have roughly 20 gallons of sap just to fill the line.
Good question! It is on a pretty decent slope so it will drain back into the IBC tote. Or we can put in some buckets. Thanks for watching!
At a 40% discount to USD, Canada is cheap eh?
That’s right!!!!! Haha thanks for watching as always!!!!!
GOD POUTINE IS SO GOOD LOL
Oh we definitely agree. Thanks for watching!!!
Not sure who invented it, but it was actually invented for the concrete industry to tie rebar together
I didn’t know that, thanks for taking the time to comment! Thanks for watching, as always!
Alright - you convinced me to pull the trigger on buying one!
Awesome!!!!!!! @smokylakemaple we got you a customer!!!!! Thanks for watching as always!
So how much sap ( in gallons) is left in your line from the lower tank to the upper tank? That sap will also be in danger of freezing .
It’s about 7-10 gallons. But we’ll allow that sap to run back into our IBC tote or drain it into a bucket just so it doesn’t freeze and cause pipe damage. Thanks so much for watching!
3/4” pipe in 900’ is roughly 20 gallons. it’s around .022 gal/ft in a full 3/4”
the twist tye is also used in cement work attaching rebar to wire panels to help the cement harden
No kidding, I didn’t know that! Thanks for watching my friend!
How much sap do I need to collect to make installing mainline worth it? This looks great but I’m not sure I tap enough trees to make it worth it…
I should have kept watching, you answered my question!
@@B-picklesjust 8-10 trees would be enough to put up a system like this. This way, you don’t have to go out and collect buckets! All your sap flows into one big container. Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great way to make things easier 😊
It definitely makes the process so much easier!
hubs developed a spring 20 some years ago. he buried a water tank and all we see is a 4 inch pipe sticking out of the ground about a foot long. central PA, never froze or went dry,
That’s great!!!! Talk about having peace of mind. Thanks for watching!!!!!!!!
I’ve been planting the same seeds I got from my grandmother year after year by saving the seeds!
How old is the variety you plant?
@@SweetMapleRidge My grandmother told me she had been planting the same seeds for over 30 years when she shared them with me a few years ago!
This new setup is a game-changer! No more mud, ruts, or heavy lifting-just efficient sap collection straight to the sugar shack. Such a smart upgrade, and it’s inspiring to see the process streamlined like this. Thanks for sharing your solution!
We are so glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!!!!!!
This is awesome!!!!!!!!
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching sir!
Wow, saving heirloom Zinnia seeds is such a great way to preserve a family legacy! Knowing these flowers will continue to give seeds year after year, and creating a family history, is truly inspiring. Here’s to generations of Zinnias and a garden filled with family heritage! Thanks for posting!
That’s so cool! We are so glad you like it!
I will be setting that system this year. I’m trying to get a couple hundred gallons this year. The Maple dude is awesome. He is from my neck of the woods in Wisconsin. Got a Dauntless this year 😊
That’s great!!!!!! You’re gonna love the Dauntless. I’ll have part 2 of this out soon; how to hang the mainline. If you do this you’ll be in business! How many sugar maples do you have? Are you tapping red maples and sugar maples, or just sugar maples?
@ almost unlimited I have to limit myself to one hundred or so. My neighbors claim they will help collect.
You make it look easy! I can’t wait to see the next steps!!!
Thanks! We’re glad you’re enjoying it so far!
Thanks for this video, I am looking forward to the next one!
We’re excited to share the next one! Thanks for watching!!!!
Bout a pint a minute it looks like. 180-200 gallons a day. It'll help fill a cistern. May have to tap multiple springs if you got a whole house full of people but that spring will give plenty of water for 1-3 people. Especially with a big tank that will hold a little more We got 7 people here so i had to put in a 3rd spring this year because our springs all got low like that during the drought.
For sure, and thanks for watching! Stored and free water is always a good thing!
I have 22 taps and may expand somewhat but to no more than likely 40 taps anytime soon. Is the Dauntless too big of a unit for that quantity? These are all century+ yard maples.
Thanks for watching my friend! We found you need somewhere around 150 gallons of raw sap to evaporate before you’re getting any syrup. It doesn’t sound like you’ll have that much, so going with the Starcat may be better. Last year we had 110 taps and it was well suited for the Dauntless; this year we may double that. Thanks again for watching!
I got a Smokey lake dauntless with a blower kit with a divided pan and a feed pan.
How do you like your blower kit? I think we’re going to add that this year. Thanks for watching!
@@SweetMapleRidge love it they say it gives you 10 percent more efficiency.
