People always mistakenly think that death is the way to awaken Luffy's fruit... No it's not, at least not the only requirement. Kaido said it himself, that awakening occurs when your mind and body syncs to the Devil Fruit. When he said mind and body, he most likely mean that mind - personality and mentality, and body - level of haki, physical attributes. Judging from the fact that Gear 5 is awakened AFTER Luffy has learned Advanced COC, and COC can't be trained but only enhanced by developing self, that most likely also means that high level of observation & armament haki are required. In short, in order to awaken the Nika fruit, the user not only has to have a very specific and rare personality, but also extreme high level of haki (ACOC min.). Yes Luffy was "chosen" (probably by the fruit) to eat the Nika fruit, but everything else was his own effort.

This water suffers from hockey being introduced early and you have to now make excuses of why things have been happening did happen. I would simply think someone like Zorro sazi even usab would say wow that's a pretty cool technique what is it and Luffy would tell them about hockey. Actually, The Hito Hito no mi model Nika had a will of its own, like many other mythical god fruits. That means that anyone who tried eating it and wasn't the chosen one for the fruit would fail. So basically the fruit chose Luffy instead of it being an accident.
