High altitude catchment work

A site inspection of a recently completed work site. We removed alien invasive pinus patula trees from the steep ravine as part of our ongoing endevours to improve the quantity and quality of water flowing in the headwaters of the uMngeni River, Kwa-Zulu Natal Province, South Africa.
The River Monitors Initiative
มุมมอง 247ปีที่แล้ว
Introducing the River Monitors: A small Initiative with big impacts. By employing locals to monitor your stream or river under our guidance, you open the door to future project and funding opportunities. This initiative sets the foundation, at a low investment, which enables bigger things in the future, while raising awareness and providing management information along the way. For more info, v...

Exploring why the entire landscape in a catchment is important in river conservation work. This footage was shot in the upper uMngeni River catchment.
Why grasslands are important

A quick look at a small tributary of the upper Bushmans River in KZN near Giants Castle and a view of why it is so silt-laden.
The Plight of the Poort
มุมมอง 1574 ปีที่แล้ว
A secluded valley hides an impending erosion catastrophe. Many tons of topsoil are about to be washed into a pristine mountain stream. We have not yet found funding for this mini project ....the clock is ticking.
The Furth stream
มุมมอง 234 ปีที่แล้ว
The Furth stream is an important tributary of the uMngeni River. It rises further along the same plateau as the main river, and tumbles down beside Inhlosane mountain to join the main river in the Dargle Valley.
The Poort Forest

And what was so upsetting about this video?

Well, a large portion of the topsoil off the overgrazed hillside has slipped down the mountain, the stream has turned into an erosion gully, and the river has a huge sediment dump. These things don't repair themselves, and even if our country had the resources to fence it off, build gabions and tackle the overgrazing, repair might take a few hundred years. This tends to invoke a depressing sense of loss amongst those who know.

Ah!........not the Dargle in Ireland then.

No @brendancoburn427 , but there is a connection. Our valley was named after the Irish valley by early colonial settlers in no small part due to the uncanny resemblance of a nearby mountain to that of their own mountain back home in Ireland.

This organisation does great work. Nurturing the upper reaches of the river catchments is an integral part in ensuring sustainable water for our growing population. Carry on the great work, Andrew and Co!

Thanks for sharing!! we have these trees in maui. They are fast growing but easy to cut. I have been using hte chips because they are nitrogen fixers, but now i know to a little careful before using them. THink ill let it break down a bit more or using in just certain areas.

Hi. I think you will find that the use of a legume to fix nitrogen relates to the plant's processes affecting the soil surrounding its roots while living, but I don't think that using woodchips from that plant will have any effect on nitrogen in the soil....If I have understood your comment correctly. Here on the Eastern seaboard of South Africa the trees have no natural enemies, and growing conditions are perfect. Trees in our drier regions do not spread, and a friend in Ireland has one in his garden and its seeds don't germinate (it cant spread)...so check out your local conditions...you may be Okay. Thank you for your interest.

Oh no! Just bought a place in the south of France and a quarter of the property is covered in silver wattle and the slope just below it is washing away. Now I get it! Thanks for the explanation. All the more reason to eradicate it as best I can.
