I am coming back to this video after being blocked from writing poetry, accepting that I want to be a speculative & confessional poet hybrid. I want to just have faith that I can become the poet that I want to be as a career that I want to be and able to do full time.

I'm both excited and afraid to read Martyr because I love Kaveh Akbar's poetry and I'm psyched to see what he can do with novels but I'm also afraid because what if he's not half as great of a novelist as he is a poet and I'm disappointed. ): I had a similar problem when I bought my first Patricia Lockwood poetry book because I loved The Rape Joke but I heard that it was totally different from the rest of her poetry and I was afraid I wouldn't like the rest of her poetry. But when I finally read it I loved it all so so much so I need to get over it and read Martyr and probably love it lol.

What a beautiful collection; very happy the algorithm led me to you! And as a Mona Awad stan/apologist (I rated Rouge 5 stars) I totally agree seeing her books translated into films. I think many people overstate things as being Lynchian, but I really feel there is something very Lynchian about the world building and philosophies of her books.

Thanks for the interesting recommendations, some new to me. I love the sound of your favourite book. I am obsessed with poetry (especially contemporary), but I also read a lot of fantasy, magical realism & thrillers. I must read Toni Morrison, been meaning to now for ages - my next mission. I'll never forget the first time I read Ralph Ellison's 'Invisible Man' - very impactful. I am an old fella who's been lucky enough to make poetry, review writing & literary essays his career. Yes, I know, I am very fortunate. Really looking forward to following your adventure with books. Thanks for the bookish inspiration. (Ah, Mary Oliver - yes, love her poetry to bits!) PS: yes, I'm a slow reader too - an absolute indulgence!

Yes a piece of any kind by Sayaka Murata would get me reading that magazine just like that! 👍 At this point anyone who includes her instead of crying about being confused by her has passed the literary test in my view. Your review of "Small Worlds" was brutally honest starting out with raves but cooling later despite your admiration of the author in general. I don't know if I do that myself, once I love an author, like Murata again, I might well defend them no matter what 😆 What happened at the end so rude of the video to cut you off like that, I know you can't take that guy anywhere, right? 😸😆
