The Camera Setting Every Photographer Needs to Master: Aperture!
Came here to thank you! Watched this awhile back and made the decision to get the Q3. Brought it to a concert yesterday and you know, I'm really impressed with the image and video quality! Thank you!
I`ve shot mostly on a Nikon F2 in the last 15 years. Now it`s the Leica MD 262 that took over. You mentioned about getting better results with the M6 than the Nikon F3. The Nikon is an SLR which in turn causes camera shake (mirror movement) that lowers image quality whilst the M6 is a rangefinder having no shake in the design allowing for better images than a SLR! You mentioned a lens is most important in photography. I could`t agree more. Since my journey was mostly in film photography, the Leica MD 262 needed to be less digital. The solution was the Summicron Rigid. It is not only vintage but renders with less aggressive sharpness for the filmic aesthetics while retaining the detail for the "Leica Look"...!
SLRs cause camera shake and rangefinders don't? Camera bodies don't cause camera shake, that's down to a number of factors like shutter speed, aperture and method of use. And to say that the Summicron 'Rigid' (?) renders with less sharpness for the 'Leica Look' is just nuts. Who would pay thousands of dollars for a camera that creates intentionally blurred images? In the 1980's I read an article in a magazine (Amateur Photographer) where they spoke about Leica 'lens plasticity'. It was then that I realised Leica hobbyists were more interested in the perceived 'legend' than actual results from the equipment.
@ The design of an SLR causes camera shake. The mirror getting out of the way to shoot a picture causes camera shake…!
I have both, an SLR and rangefinder and can easily see the difference...!
I need to try God help me
You’re going to go down the rabbit hole and never look back. 😎
I'm a Sony shooter. And every once in a while, I'll think about buying the RX1r II. It has a great lens, but it is a fixed lens, not interchangeable. And, at this point, the auto focus isn't as good as the current Sony cameras. The price point is also relatively high for what you get. But, I still wouldn't rule out the RX1r II when you want one camera and one lens when out and about.
Love my Q2m!
Great video. I share your love for this camera, and I think that the fact that the Leica is the antithesis of auto-everything also truly contributes to making you a better photographer. And you photographed Rick Beato, cool!
Which Polaroid camera are you using besides the I-2?
It just clicked with me, but instead of spending another $10K AUD in a Leica Q2 Monochrome camera with a fixed lens, it would make sense for me to buy the Rangefinder 35mm film version, and switch between Kodak stocks of colour and black and white negative photos. It just means I need to find a negative film scanner to digitize and colour grade the photos. Epson have a few good ones. What would you recommend ?
I really love my Q2 Monochrom.
The Sony RX1R is better because full-frame is always superior. Never bother with anything less than that, waste of time anyway.
My first roll I got 18 out of 36 that came out good. That's 50% I beat the odds! Beginners luck I guess. It was definitely not the fact my camera has automatic shutter, and aperture control, It was definitely all me 😏
After getting the OG Q3 in 2023 I have been neglecting my A7R5 which i still love.. I try to alternate between the 2 depending on my itinerary for the day
Great tutorial, straight to the point & detailed. Thanks
The M6 teaches patience and preparation for the right shot… its maybe not for super spontaneous modern street photography. If you are the type of human who loves to wait for the magical moment the M6 will help you. It helps because the camera offers you limited possibilities and forces you to make a decision… it was on a walk today when it made ahhh now I understand. Mechanical it’s a perfect german design. Only two LEDs are electrical. The rest including the Parallax~Correction is mechanical. A timeless masterpiece in engineering. Using one has nothing to do with reason. Any digital camera is lightyears ahead. Its going back in time, very calming…
Are you buying it ?
You’re obviously completely new to photography but you have a $6k point and shoot camera? Must be nice. BTW, the sensor in your Leica is made by Sony. It’s the same sensor as you Sony.
In a different camera. And yes, having a Leica is nice.
I started photography in April of '24 and bought the base model in Canon's lineup the EOS 4000D. I'm still learning so a $6,000 camera is something I don't need right now. Besides I started shooting film in November and I like it more. I like the challenge and less tech, it's more fun to me, and personally a better learning experience.
1 in every 100 "never tell me the odds"-Han Solo. I've committed all these mistakes many times. My biggest was not using a polarizer when shooting outside, so my blue skies were just white and had no detail in them. Lesson learned there.
You can do composed single pictures with a digital camera, too. IMHO you can even learn more easily because you can control the result immediately and not after a week when you forgot what you even did. You see how everything changes the picture. Using some small cheap disposable camera will not help you learn using a real camera because you have no control and can barely see what you are shooting. That's wasted time and money. If you really want to test film buy a cheap SLR where you can control the settings. You always take single shots if it is a normal not moving object (e.g. a building). Bursts make no sense in that situation. But be ready to use bursts if something is moving. Especially sports (like the mentioned cyclist) are very difficult to get with only one shot. In these cases use bursts to get a selection of pictures. Of course you should set the camera up before and choose the right settings. But what happens in the moment of action is (mostly) not controllable. Getting a lucky shot is exactly that. Only the most experienced sport photographers who watched a sport for thousands of hours may have the intuition to get the right moment with one picture. And even they have no control over everything. I come from film starting with a simple completely manual camera and then got more modern cameras. When I started with Digital I still was in the old mindset and made too few pictures. Until now I rarely use the highest speed of bursts because the film mindset is there. And that is a problem. If there is fast movement use what ever the camera offers you. And sometimes just press the shutter, if something interesting happens. If you analyse everything and try to get the correct settings the moment might be gone. And if you have more than one chance you still can do the considerations. With modern cameras many of the settings can be left to the camera which will get a good result for most situations if you don't have the time.
Tilly Shull, would you consider doing a comparison video between this Leica and the Sony A7CR with say, the Sony FE 50mm F2.5 G or SIGMA's 45mm F2.8 DG DN | C. I think the Sony is the better camera in all but one category; value retention!
Leica Q3 43 the perfect camera? The AF is slower than the Sony and other full Frame cameras, the viewfinder is not much better, it has a fixed lens and it cost so much more than the others. I like the Leica Q3 43 design, image look and the sound it makes when capturing images but "perfect camera" it is not!
Got a Sony half thr price I guess and you know what, the shutter sound can completely be turned off ;) Leica is completely overpriced.
Yeah, but then it’s not a Leica 😂
Please stop encouraging me!
Newsflash: An expensive camera is good.
This camera is worth more than me. Literally it's worth more than my life insurance policy. Definitely too rich my blood, but I have no doubt it is a great camera. I've been saving this joke for a while.
It had better be good, it's $6000!
I dont think the price is justified given sony can do similar if not better with half of its cost l!
Great photos!
Q series is super great, great videos made!Keep it up.
If you like Q3, wait till you try Hasselblad X2D you will never go back. Nothing matches the pure color and clarity and sharpness of a X 2-D try it.
The Hasselblad X2D is the perfect camera!
Hey Tilly, my name is Johnny and I'm a freelance logo designer, would you love to have a logo for your photography business and your channel to have a brand image your audience can remember your contents from and also can be one of the merch print you can sell to your fans to buy and own and share the words about your channel too? Let me know if you interested and I would love to work with you to design these for you! :-)
I love the Q system. Not a lot of people understand it they think it’s traditional point and shoot. It’s a lot more than that.
Let me correct you on that mate,it’s has Manual controls it’s not a point and shoot simple as that👍
@ how are you correcting me? I was pointing out that lots of people reviewing it on here call it a point and shoot.
@@TonyEbikemeJr right ok,point is no point and shoot camera is 5-6k
Yet its over piced!
This camera is $7,000+!!! Go buy an upgraded iPhone or Android and that camera also works as a phone and spend $$6k on other things!! Call it a day. Leica is luxury brand 💩! Stop promoting them!
Oh dear. Clearly never owned a Leica…
Poor man story
I got an almost new one for 4.8k… other pre-owned ones are around 4.5k here in Germany
Oh, dear!. I have a couple of Leicas and I've upset you! What will I do, now?
Beautiful shots! Agree 200%! Its revolutionizing my photography! Price IS WORTH IT! Oh and f/1.7, not f/1.2. :)
I was so tempted to take the Q3 43 to a concert but had concerns of it being called a professional zoom camera so didn't. How did you convince somebody at a concert (that maybe doesn't know anything about cameras) it was a fixed focal length camera?
I showed them the “28” on the lens and explained that it’s the focal length, and it doesn’t have a range so it cannot zoom. I also turned the camera on and showed them that the focus ring didn’t zoom, just focuses.
Your work is so beautiful, Tilly!!❤📷 I just picked up the original Q for a bargain and I absolutely love it!! On a side note, I just wanna mention that while the Q series are single-lens cameras, they are not point-and-shoot cameras. The user may have complete control over the exposure and focus🙏🏿
No, it doesn't have IBIS...
Apologies, I misspoke, it does not have IBIS, but it does have optical image stabilization built into the lens.
Quick info, both Q3 and A7R are using the same sensor because Leica bought the 60MP sensor from Sony and amended it slightly to change it to a sensor that does not auto focus. So tbh M11, Q3, or any Leica rocking the 60MP sensor are just extremely over priced Sony cameras. The last good Leica sensor was M9 and M10 variants.
Doesn't really matter who makes the sensor, sometimes they design them but most never manufacture them. Leica is all about lenses and design
The fly in the ointment is the price, I have a Nikon Z7II and Z8. I can drop a 28 or a 40mm lens on either, better value and close enough in image quality. The Leica Qs are great but who's got $7k to drop on a point and shoot. I want one too but then I have to stop myself from going $7K in debt. Nice review.
That's definitely a better value proposition. However, only the expensive Nikon glass approaches the quality of Leica glass. Personally, 28mm is too wide for me for an everyday carry (not interested in cropping). If I was a rich guy and had enough to blow on multiple cameras, I'd get the Leica Q3 43mm version and a Medium Format Hasselblad with a few lenses.
@@Daniel_Zalman I agree if I could shoot Leica and Hasselblad I would. I used to shoot hasselblad in the Film days and loved those cameras. Now I use the 24-70 2.8 and 14-24 2.8 alot but I still use that 40 F2 and the 35 F1.8S and I still like the images out of those lenes as well. Man a square Hasselblad was a great thing!
@@arndtbc Do you use the 24-70 for work or for personal stuff? I've always loved the idea of a 24-70 f/2.8 (it's the range that I like to shoot in and 2.8 gives enough of a shallow DOF when I'm looking for that look) but I found the weight prohibitive for just a day out in the city. I can carry one, I just think it becomes a chore after some time (maybe I'm wrong). For now, I mostly have the 50 1.8s mounted on my z8 and carry a 35 or 85 in my bag, depending on what I think I may want to capture that day.
@@Daniel_Zalman I have used a 24-70 2.8 for many years so I'm used to it. Its not light but the glass is high quality and the range is perfect for me. I use on on a Z8 mostly. I also have the 35 1.8 S, 58 1.4G and the 105 2.8 S macro. I love them all but Its just as easy to carry the 24-70. It feels like a pro level lens in the hand, no compromises, aside from its a bit heavier. I used to do Professional work but these days I just do photography for me, It makes me much happier. I also use the Z7II and use the 35, 40, 58 on that camera more.
It's more than a P&S, and buying used (that's what I did) helps. Still not cheap, but worth it, IMO.
colors on the x100 series cameras in my opinion are terrible.
Hmmm..... Ok
No lie nail on the coffin here with the concert pictures! reason I've ambassodered the Q for years..... You can go to shows with it! sports events with it! no problem! the 43mm only makes it sweater for the crop with 60mp if you seats are mid! Great point here!
The widest aperture is f/1.7, not f/1.2. This camera is as phenomenal as Billy Strings.
Are you yet another youtuber that forgets to turn off the mirror effect on the front facing camera or is this ironic? God I'm so tired of mirrored images. May 2025 take them away forever
What are you talking about? This was not shot with a phone
@@cristibalutayour shirts words are mirrored… 🏴
I'd be curious to know what you think of the Sony RX1 series & Ricoh GR line-up. Unrelated, that's a cool nail color that you make look great.
Perfect besides the price haha. And maby for a camera this expensive i would expect top class 2024 autofocus performance but its still an amazing camera. The rendering is so good.
Such a sick camera. Great results as well. Are these straight out of camera?
Agreed! Yep, straight from the camera. The black and white are in the monochrome setting too.
Oh yes! I bought one of these last year and I will NEVER sell this or upgrade. I also own the X100V and I do like that too because the built-in flash is very convenient for family get-togethers.
Which Polaroid would you suggest to buy in this case? Thank you for the video!
Does Ilford offer an HP/HP5 in 100ISO? How would you compare Delta 400 to HP5 400? THX
It just feels like a film camera. I’ve been shooting since the 80’s and I just got a Zf. It’s incredible.
