    This is an excellent tutorial. Can you also do a tutorial on how to make a mask smooth, not polygon like? I do product photography and I need hard, straight lines in some areas of my product image and then I need half-circle, round like lines in other areas of my product. Some programs are good at selecting straight or round lines, but some programs are not. I am not talking about feathering.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you! ON1 does have Line Mask tool (Shift P), though it doesn't let you adjust around curves like Photoshop's Pen tool. ON1 also gives you different options when Refining a selection. Instead of Hair/Branches, consider trying Hard Edges.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you and I am happy that you were able to follow along! Yes, you can replace the preset. Once you select a new texture for the background, you can right-click on the preset and select Update Preset with Current Settings. Another option so that you don't overwrite the original preset, is once you change the background, go to Settings and select Save Settings as Preset. This will save it as a new preset.

    Can you use Reablum without Photoshop?

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can use Reblum as a stand-alone program. Just like I showed when using it for a batch of images, you can use it for a single image too. No need for Photoshop or a program like ON1.

    • @RDJim
      @RDJim หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TomCheswick I have On1 but was wondering if Reablum works as a stand alone plug-in for ON1? or just stand alone?

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the follow up question Jim, but I am not sure if I am understanding it. Stand alone programs and plugins are two separate types of programs. Stand alone means the program runs by itself and does not need a host program like photoshop or ON1. A plugin works within or is launched by a host program. Reblum can work either way. In the video, I used it as a plugin in ON1 when I was retouching individual images. ON1 launches Reblum and then Reblum automatically adds a new layer in ON1 with the retouching. Then I used Reblum as a Stand alone program when I did a group of photos to show the batch capabilities of Reblum. I hope this answer helps, but if not, let me know and I can try again.

    Question for a future topic. I love ON1 as an editor, but I don't use the DAM because Sync 360 in a word, SUCKS. I've been using Mylio as a DAM and it works great for that, allowing me to sync all my devices and even pull down originals when needed. Do you happen to have a recommended workflow for this? I'd really like to have both apps pointing at the same set of photos.

    Tom, thank you for another helpful video. I am curious though, is there any particular reason why you use the opacity setting under blending over expanding the opacity section within the local adjustment or effect to change opacity? From what I can tell they are linked and perform the same function.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question Schuey! Your way is much better, it is quicker and easier then going into the properties panel's blending tab. Thanks for pointing that out. I do a lot of masking where I will need to change the blending mode from Normal to something like Overlay, Softlight or Color. I just got in to the habit of changing the Opacity there too. In the future, when I am just adjusting Opacity, I will use your way. Thank you!

    How did you remove the grey line on der right arm? You didn't show that....

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Carl, are you asking about the grey on the edge of her arm at 10:52 in the video? If so, the skin has a soft edge so there does appear to have a soft grey transition on the edge. Since I am replacing the background with a background that has a similar luminosity, the grey edge just goes away. It may show up if I was to make the new background white or black. I will have to make a more advanced masking tutorial on how to deal with halos or when the cutout isn't very clean. In the mean time, my best advice is if you know that you want to swap a background, select the background before the shoot. If it is really dark, shoot on a black or dark grey background. Be sure to have edge lights so there is good separation from you subject and background. If the new background is really light, shoot on a light grey background. And in this example, a medium grey background was the right choice. Hope this helps, but feel free to follow up if I didn't answer your question.

    I've had a large and small WhiBal since January of 2006. While doing what you've shown in this video is great, you can also set a custom white balance in your camera using the WhiBal BEFORE doing your shoot, which will then make all your shots perfectly balanced in camera and giving you one less step to do in post processing, as well as being "baked in" to your JPG's, if used.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great suggestion when using the large WhiBal! I just got the one that is about 8x10" and also set custom white balance in camera.

  • @rexhoss
    @rexhoss 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I tried content aware cropping in a very similar way, to create 8x10 dimensions. I generally shoot in studio with muslin and solid color paper backgrounds. Unfortunately, when the program fills in the areas, the results are blocky, like big pixelated areas and the results are unusable. Very disappointing since I crop most pictures. I hope future versions of this feature work better because it's causing me a lot of extra time to get decent cropped images. If you have suggestions on how to get better results, that would be helpful. Otherwise, count me very disappointed in this feature.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just tested out a gray muslin and had very good results. I then tested out a shoot that we used a pink roll of paper and that just gave ok results. I would have to retouch some of the new pink background to make it look good. ON1 is good about improving their software so hopefully Content Aware Cropping keeps getting better.

    • @rexhoss
      @rexhoss 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @TomCheswick thanks for checking it out. I've tried it on a Mac and PC with various backgrounds (mudlin, paper etc. ) and it 99% of the time gives unusable results that have to be worked a lot, to be usable. I agree with you, I hope they improve the feature. I bring it up to hopefully draw attention to the fact that it's unusable as it currently is. That's the only way the company will know that the feature is woefully bad and unusable.

      Thanks for the suggestion and I am happy that you like the video. Most of the time, you get halos when trying to replace a dark background with a light one or replacing a white background with a darker one. It is best to replace a background with a another background with a similar brightness. If that is not an option, then you are going to either feather the mask's edge, use the Chisel Brush or the Masking Brush to manually remove the halo. Another way is under the Masking Global Settings is to slide the Levels buttons. I find sliding the middle button left or right works well for me.

    I'd completely forgotten the camera profile and, sadly, never knew I could bring erase and clone together under the favorites. Like you, I use clone regularly and it was a minor pain having to dive down the menu over and over. Thanks. This got you a like and a subscribe. Also, thanks for getting me to see a new function for the clone tool in relation to dark circles. I had the same problem you voiced with using the dark circles slide (even worse when the subject isn't facing the camera evenly. Another thanks for a very, very helpful video on using my favorite quick edit/touch up approach with Luminar Neo.

    Great video, Tom. Very helpful. Just one question regarding your thought process with applying a LUT last, after you have done all the other adjustments. When colour grading videos, a common approach is to apply a "look" (LUT/Power Grade etc.) at the timeline level to establish the overall look and then apply primary and secondary grading under that look for final adustments by clip. By applying the LUT last like you did, I woud think that a lot of the adjustments/edits done beforehand may be wasted since you may need to adjust them again after the LUT is applied. Of course, there are lots of ways to acheive a result and workflows are personal preference. I'm just interetsed to hear how you approach an edit and the reason behind it. Thanks again.

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You make a excellent point! I do sometimes have to make exposure adjustments after applying a LUT so I understand why others would choose to apply a LUT in the beginning. If I had a clear vision of the finished version, I would do that too. I find that when I do use a LUT it is because I am near the end of my editing process, and want to explore additional looks to see if I like them any better or if I still prefer the colors that I am getting using the camera profile that I selected in the beginning of my process. Great question and hope that my explanation better helps you to understand my thought process.

    Thanks for sharing your workflow. For 24 years I have also followed an “old School” organization with project folders and subfolders instead of using the “keyword and database” approach. Your video is the first time I have seen a clear way to use ON1 PR in this way. Hurray!

    great video Tom. And all of my camera profiles are there except I shoot a lot of images with my iPhone 14 Pro in Raw and ProRaw. Those camera profiles are not in the folder you showed but they are in the folder above that is called Adobe Standard. I hoped that copying those dcp files into the camera folder it would add the iPhone. It did but they are the dcp profiles I expected. Do you know how to get iPhone 14 Pro camera profiles into On1?

    • @TomCheswick
      @TomCheswick 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry, I don't. Hopefully, someone else will leave a comment with the answer. I would also contact the support team at ON1. They have always been super helpful answering my questions.

    • @ednsb
      @ednsb 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      thank you Tom but I have been working with On1 since the beta. They say they are working on it but right now On1 doesn’t handle ProRaw images well. Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic have only 2 profiles - one is simply ProRaw and the other is ProRaw BW. I have even contacted Adobe to see if there is a way to export them in a DCP format but never got a reply. The camera profiles for the phones don’t seem to be camera-related but rather lens-related in any case when I copied them in the camera profile folder they did show up in On1 but did freaky things to the images so I deleted them out of the folder. What I am hoping is someone made their own DCP for the iPhone 14p Pro. I do not have the equipment to do that. @@TomCheswick

    • @ednsb
      @ednsb 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      on further research, the ProRaw profile in Camera Raw is an XMP format based on right-clicking on it to see the information. So it is an XMP which I am not sure if On1 could even process IF I can find its location. @@TomCheswick

      I am happy that you enjoyed the videos! It is actually a camera stand that I have had for almost 30 years. It is a Regal/Arkay Regalite-Six. You might be able to find them used, as they last almost forever. Then there is an inexpensive ball head attached to it, the Manfrotto 486RC2. The ball head is not really made for commercial photography but works well for my studio portrait shoots.

    You can use bracket keys to make the brush smaller or larger, but you can also use CTRL-ALT-MouseScroll and SHIFT-ALT-MouseScroll with the mouse.

      Thanks for the tip, I did not know that you can change the brush size with the MouseScroll wheel. I do use it alone to to scroll up and down and Option/Alt MouseScroll wheel to Zoom in and out.
