Synclavier I: full disassembly and cleaning
When old hardware is acting up, a thorough cleaning job is in order. In this video, I blow out 40 years of university and home studio dust from my rare Synclavier I, the predecessor to the widely known Synclavier II. There were only 13 units of this instrument ever made. You are looking at serial #6.

Recording King lap steel: how bad is it?
มุมมอง 5Kปีที่แล้ว
I complained a lot about the quality of the Recording King lap steel guitar in my previous videos, especially when compared to the Epiphone Electar Century. Now, I am going to set some things straight. I honestly thought fret markers were more of a suggestion and you'd have to use your ear to perfectly play in tune :-). Then again I mostly play a pedal steel without fretmarkers so it's never been an issue. It's important to note, the thicker the string, the longer (only by a fraction) it should be to be properly intonated. This is due to the stiffness. The thicker the string, the further the knot of the string is away from the bending point :-). Give a bass a close look, you can see how slanted the saddles need to be to compensate for string gauge. So changing the strings, despite it being a small change in gauge, can in fact change your intonation quite a bit. I know for pedal steel atleast, you strictly never change your strings to another thickness. Partially due to intonation problems, partially due to the changes being out of tune.
@@BeesKneesBenjamin thank you 😊 don’t think I will ever tackle pedal steel!
Mines great. No triuble with it.
You use the fret makers for note accuracy?😂
@@WillieBeard why not? Are you removing them?
Thank you!!!
Do you know the original price of this overrated DX7? LMAO! .........,"that you actualy buy".
Yep, it was very affordable. You could buy about half a dozen of them for one of these 😆
The music starting at :30 it’s just breathtaking! I’m getting a synclavier ii and hope it’s fm voices can sound this lush
Thank you for the praise. This is some custom code I wrote after reading how Brian Enos piece “Discreet Music” was put together. I am planning to make a video about it, actually.
yoo u deep is voice men
No shit, must have made that after a long night out 😆
I came looking for more information but didnt learn anything new, Exept! i saw the guy pulling with a twicers and i was like hmmm if he did it by luck like that. that means theres a science behind it that makes it work, so i put a pipe into the XLR metal shell and pressured it towards the metal unhook butten, seperating the chell from the metal hook inside the XLR cable, and guess what! IT POPED OUT, so basically i am sharing this comment for information i hope it saves someone from destroying their Tascam
@@JETNEWS-US thanks for sharing 👍
I doubt any lap steels have their fret markers right on the note. You basically have to hear the note you want to play anyway.
Hilarious! The markers on the Epiphone were dead on, though.
@@rootstudio247 I mean, you can't even see the fucking marks half the time you're playing! You're at different angles and such. It's all about being able to hear the correct pitch as you come up on a note. If you can't do that you are never going to be a good lap steel player no matter how the frets are placed.
@@joeking433 😆
I have to agree here - I've always used the fret markers as a guide and use my ear for precision. I have the RK lap steel, usually in open D and it hasn't been an issue for me. I've had other lap style guitars - tricone squareneck and even an old "converted" flattop and I view the frets as helpers rather than precision markers.
@@dummyguava Exactly!
The Recording King sounded much better.
Thanks, I agree.
What even makes one lap steel different from another? They're the easiest instrument to make there is. I've made several and they all sounded great.
I always accepted that a change in gage changed intonation on regular guitar because it always did for me. I always assumed it was due to the changes in the way a heavier string vibrates compared to a thinner one and also that a change in string tension with gage change alter the action slightly. Of course I don’t think the tension/ action would be a factor on a lap steel. At least I never believed it would matter. ??
Most people argue that the change in intonation is because of the change in the arching across the bridge. But I have never investigated further myself.

The theory of the different bending across the bridge is what I heard. It does make sense when you think about it. Also one of the reasons you are supposed to press down on fresh strings right next to the bridge to define the proper intonation point.
Baloney! Actually the Allen Organ company invented the first digital computer musical instrument in 1971. This predated the Synclavier by 6-7 years. The Allen Digital Computer Organ was based on Rockwell Digital Technology. Allen offered offered the RMI Keyboard Computer KC-1. Introduced in 1974, the Keyboard Computer was the world's first digitized portable musical keyboard instrument. The advanced technology used in the Allen Organs was incorporated into a portable case, with it's own unique voicing. This instrument also predated the Synclavier by 3-4 years. The KC-1 was the FIRST digital SYNTHESIZER you could buy.
Thanks for your input. The RMI was earlier indeed, but it was a hybrid instrument.
Not only does it sound excellent, but I’m digging those disk drives.
Thanks. Would have been nice to capture the mechanical noises of the disk drives, too, but I recorded the line out signal only.
I actually have a Synclavier 1, which I got from a guy at Anthrocon, who bought it from En Esch (from KMFDM) in 1998!
Good for you! Hope you are still putting it to good use 👍
As far as I know, there are only 2 surviving Synclavier 1s. This is one of them. The other one is owned by the (ex) furry youtuber Odin Wolf. I was able to play his at Anthrocon a few years ago. Interestingly, his was once owned by David Bowie.
I have been able to track down four of them. At least three of those are working. I am not sure about the other one.
I just bought one of these and like it very much. It seems very well-made and has wonderful tone. It was a real bargain at $220.
Good choice 👍
I believe you are correct- the Epiphone strings are very light. I had to switch them for C6 tuning as they were too light.
It's a given that with any new Lap Steel , you need to replace the string like objects , with a proper set for your prefered tuning . The HB on the Epi is wound such that it is capable of good bright clean tones . Unless you are primarily playing heavy distorted blues rock , the P-90 on the RK is much more versatile than their dark HB . The RK Steels randomly come with either solid or slotted Headstock. Doesn't make a difference in the playing Conspicuous in its absence in this market segment , is the Gretsch 5700
@@BlakeHouse-j3u thanks for the info- I am new to the instrument.
You spit krouts always stealing out culture
Always put new strings on any instrument....
Awesome video! Thank you so very much for this.
Glad you liked it 👍
1. Yes , these are * Different * , and are their own instruments . Other than both having strings , very little to no carryover from conventional Armpit Guitar 2. Whatever string like objects come with them from the factory , they should imeadately be discarded and replaced with approprate gage strings for your intended Tuning . There are a wide plethors of tuningd , many of them requiring strings . Manufacturers can't read your mind , and often as not ship with whatever they ship with regular electic guitars . 3. In your videos I've watched I didn't hear you explicitly say what gages you use , but when you discussed strings generally , everything you talked about was waaaay too light . You're not fretting or string bending . You want the strings to be firm under the tone bar . For open D/E/G & usually A , a good starting point are Dobto gages ( ie 16- 56 ) , for a full 25 inch scale length . For these shorter scaled it can still be loose , and you could want heavier . ( The typical C6 tunings have very different gages , and specific C6 string sets ) No , you won't find Lap Seel strings at regular music stores. . You'll have to order them . If you know what you want , the usual intermet sellers of only strings will have a good selection . If you're starting out , Morrell Music of Bristol , TN marks their sets for the relavent tunings , and have helpful website . As to scale length , oversimplified - Full Length is 25 inch , csrriec over from the predecesor instfumemt. Short varies , but thnk 22.5 inch +/- an inch . Shiorter helps facilitates radical slants within the limits of the human wrist . Longer ( in theory )helps intonation slightly , but in real life is usually Dobro players who want to match muscle memory , and to fascilitate switching back snd forth song to song , between Steel snd Dobro .
Thank you for the insightful comment - greatly appreciated 👍
This is really helpful...thank you...Just for any new arrivals (like me)...rather than having to convert your wave file to 32 bit in Audacity (or similar) you can now export from Logic Pro in 32 Bit (floating) and the RC 500 will accept it. Been doing it this morning .....Go, File....Bounce...Project or Section....(then specify 32 bit, 44100 etc before bouncing to desktop)
Point well taken. I just wanted to show how you can do it using free tools.
That’s a very large Yamaha DX7😆
Yes, two huge operators 😄
thank you. That is very helpful.
Thank you 😊
THANK YOU!!!
Danke Michael 😊
thank you for making this- I was torn between the two and was leaning towards the Epi.
You are most welcome 🤗
Neither - both these are duds imo. Their scale length is too short, string spacing too narrow and pups are poor
A bit strict perhaps. Don’t think these are useless, but if you can spend more, yes, you deserve a better instrument.
Good stuff, thumbs up appreciated!
Thank you 😊
King sounds better to me too
I dont care for the white fret board on the RK.Asthetics do come into play for me, unfortunately.
The Epihone is definitely the prettier guitar.
Cool vid! Interesting stuff with the different wave forms.
Thank you 😊
Thank you. Good comments. I have just bought the Epiphone and converted it to Left handed without any problems at all. A little filing here and there at the nut and 'bridge' . It sounds great.
Excellent 👍
Can you upload a longer sample of the moog noise oscillator? Perhaps its my imagination, but I kinda hear a periodicity in it: `taptaptap..tap`, `taptaptap..tap`.
That is just your desire to hear some pattern. It is totally random.

Informative.. I like the sound of the Recording King as well... Good Choice. 👍
Mein Atari ST4 hatte damals besser gegroovt. Aber damals war SC State of the Art 😊
This instrument cost the price of a house …. Now a days even a used MacBook for about $200 Bucks could probably do what is was able to do … and then some ../
Yes, that processing power could easily emulate it while you’re surfing the web at the same time 😎
Excellent work, helped alot! @4:02 That image should be on the wall of every venue XD
Ha, maybe I should sell posters 😀
I got it for my birthday present
Good for you! That’s the best way to get one 💪
I have the Recording King, I love it
Same here 😊
On mine, I found the harmonic to be right above the twelfth fret marker. I think that means it is okay. I was thinking about replacing my humbucker. Are you satisfied with the stock pickup?
Yes, I’m happy with that pickup.
@@rootstudio247 Thank you. 😊
In order to get a pure square waveform, the pulse width adjustment needs to be exactly at 50%. Anything else will sound like a pulse wave, and not a square wave.
Yes of course! I definitely made sure it wad 50%. You can easily train your ears to tell when it is square.
@@rootstudio247 I'm sorry but my trained ears tell me that the P5 is not precisely adjusted to get a 50% duty cycle. The Moog is.
@@AlainHubert interesting! Still the Prophet sounds better to me, no matter where I put the Moog‘s knob. There must be more to this.
@@rootstudio247 The Moog Rogue doesn't have a pulse width adjustment knob. On the waveform selector switch, OSC1 has a fixed 50% duty cycle (square waveform) and OSC2 offers 85% duty cycle (pulse waveform).
I was astonished to learn that only 13 of these were ever made. Through some unusual circumstances, I ended up owning TWO of them for a while-actually two synthesizer units and a single ABLE computer. With a bit of hardware and software hacking, I was able to get both synths working (doubling the number of FM voices), and also got them to do Casio-style phase distortion as well as sine-carrier FM. I eventually passed the hardware on to Jon Appleton (one of the NED co-founders), who had helped me obtain needed parts. I’m curious to know where they are now, after Jon passed away early in 2022.
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Maybe through my videos I will eventually find all previous owners. Great to hear from you 👍
Thanks a bunch for the research and digging deeper..love the analogies..you saved us a lot of time much appreciated!!
Glad it was helpful!
Hello friend, what is the tuning of your instrument? As a reference from the thinnest rope to the thickest rope, from high to low it would be, thanks for giving me that information in advance
Both instruments are tuned to Open D in the video. Epiphone should have been tuned to Open E. Just wanted to switch back and forth between instruments and play the same thing.
Just followed and figured out how to get an XLR shell out of my MixPre using your video. Much thanks!
Excellent 😃
