Large Format Landscape Photography S3E1: Western Junipers
In this video, I discuss what has kept me so busy for the past 5 months. I also take you out into the field to explore and photograph my local forest.
I'm at the beginning stages of a new photographic project. I really enjoy photographing the landscape but I've been wanting to narrow down my subject matter and make a more cohesive and focused body of work. These are the first two photographs of my new project focused on the Western Juniper, also known as the Sierra Juniper.

Will this conversion also work on a G550?
Yes it will. Check the Schmude website.
Thank you for saving me from yet another Ben Horne episode. But I still think you should get more "Fatalish" and make spend more time "waiting for the light" a bigger part of your already stunning compositions.
Happy to see more of your images and videos. Motivation to get out and shoot more film.
Sir great art question what black and white film do you use.
Really amazing work also very inspiring to see you in the field 👏
very cool, can you tell me the name of this system for opening and closing the drawers, I am a truck driver and want to make something similar for myself, but I can not find this system on the Internet, I will be very grateful
Beautiful trees. The film holders are exquisite as well.
Like everyone here, I'm glad to see you back< Shane. and I'm still hoping for that darkroom tour.
Which brand of 8x10 are you using?
Yes! Glad you’re back. Beautiful craftsmanship all around.
the woodwork is amazing. can we have a darkroom tour please?
Great to see you back Shane!
i'm so happy this is back.
Beautiful wood, the projects are stunning!!!
Welcome back! I finally sprung for a 4x5 and it’s been a lot of fun - thank you for the inspiration. (Not good pics yet, but still fun!)
And here I was thinking you were a professional photographer that did woodworking on the side. This makes more sense. Killer shots per usual, excited to take on this season with you!
It is great to see you back. Thanks for the update and looking forward to seeing more of your darkroom. Are you happy with it? If you don't mind I have one suggestion for you. When you show us your images could you put them on a black background instead of white? The images you showed have wonderful gray tones but with that bright white background it is difficult to appreciate them. It is much worse on my tv than computer but that bright light really takes away from the beauty of your subtle gray tones especially in the back lit images. Looking forward to your third season
Waited too long
I'm amazed don't know what to say?
good to see you back into video! I am also getting 8x10 soon, looking forward to using it soon!
Awesome. Have fun!
Would love to to know more about your tube that you process your film with. I’ve tried everything, tubes, trays, dip and dunk and always have issues.
That's a bummer. I'll be working on a developing film series over on Patreon.
So stoked to see you back! Thanks for the new video, man. This new project is looking interesting and fun for me to follow along.
darkroom and process !!!!!
I always follow you And I like your approach to photography. At the end of the story I wonder Pictures with a 450mm lens look wider than pictures with a 360mm lens.
Thanks for following along! I moved my tripod closer to the subject for the 360mm exposure.
@@shanedignum Thank you
That made my day to see the beautiful craftsmanship and talent of your woodworking, and then to hear the shutter click on your lens on a tasteful subject. Thank you Shane!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good to see you back, are the 450 and 360 the wrong way round or did you change position?
Thank you. I moved closer for the 360mm exposure. The small round boulder in the foreground of the 450mm shot was bothering me. I'm not sure which I prefer.
Awesome. Pleased the break from videos was productive, and not creative block/burnout.
glad to see you back ! needed this season 3
This is a minor point: I think it is more important that we hear the shutter "clicking" than the moody music. Welcome back also!
Thanks! The light was fading quickly, so I had my wife film that whole series on the iPhone 15, but the audio was terrible.
That’s your opinion.
Your carpentry is just pure art. The photography is not bad either. What is next Star Wars?!
Great to see you back with another season!
Welcome back! Love the b&w! Also, I am throughly enjoying the film holder case that you made me! Beautifully crafted functional art! Absolutely love it!
Hey, Tim! Thanks for the comment. Happy to hear that!
Hi Shane welcome back, marvelous wood working and stunning photographs, great!!!!
Welcome back, Shane!! Looking forward to S3.
Finally see you again, we missed you welcome back!!
Missed ya! Nice to have you back!
shane good to see you back
Fine work, both wood and film!
More!
Very nice work Shane well done. 👍
Beautiful woodworking and beautiful photos. i assume a lot of viewers are very curious to see a video about your darkroom and your film processing…
Enjoyed. Welcome back!
That's gorgeous wood working. Great job. I'm happy for you. I hope you sell another hundred!
Nice shots. Yeah, welcome back.
The storage boxes and benches are beautiful Shane. The cabinet sitting behind you (during the intro) reminds me of the chart tables we have on the bridge of merchant and Navy ships. Very practical indeed. Nice to see you back for season 3.
I used to have a 4x5 field view camera and when I would mount the camera on the tripod people would oohh and aww and ask me hundreds of questions. That camera (Wista 4x5 field camera) was a rock star. My wife would sometimes run interference for me and answer questions while I was trying to compose a shot (thanks Lovey). I miss 4x5 or 8x10 cameras like this one.
Do you still have the roof skin you cut out? Interested in purchasing it as the area around my sunroof is badly corroded.
Daaaang that was a nice one with the top of the mesa lit. What a fun looking adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome images. Question? Where did you get the square yellow filter?
Thank you. I have a couple of square filter holders. I use a Cokin X pro and the Lee system.
Shane I just love your quiet laid back style. Especially when you said I don't care about getting those likes on Instagram. Lololol. Totally agree 💯 That last shot was 🔥. Loved it.
