Static ergs are dinosaurs.
No Erg can truly mimic the feel of the shell cutting through the water. I do admire the effort of this company, though. I'll stick with Concept II.
You are totally right! It doesn't replace the on water experience. And it doesn't support any bladework training. But is does provide the body weigth movement similar as in the boat, and so it does improve the most difficult movement parts (like change of direction, connection timing at the catch and stoke effectiveness, like stroke smoothness and length) of the rowing stroke. And prevent lower back injuries at the same time. The reason most international rowing and high performances teams are using RP3 for their daily workout, next to the boattraining. And more and more club level rowers are experiencing fast technical improvements (mostly with 3-4 weeks), by using RP3 in there schedules, with the RP3 Coach Approach. it is comparable with training for a speedskate event on figure skating skates. Both are skating and on ice, but I always would choose the skates that are used during the regatta.
@@RP3Rowing I appreciate your detailed explanation. 👍
I am an engineer by profession. Never have rowed or swam in life. I wanted to become fit and have run in the past, I wanted to pickup some form of cardio. And rowing piqued my curiosity as I literally dont know what it is. In the last 2 weekends I did a lot of digging around and ended up in this insightful video. My take on this episode is 2 elite rowing athletes (who understood how good rp3s are ) trying to explain the rp3 guys to get more elite athletes onboard rp3 to get more data. Thats the biggest blocker I see for rp3 inspite of having a superior machine. Also after reading a lot about c2 static erg and rp3, it is very clear the old school guys (coaches) are sticking to existing mass of data from c2 users and hesitant to try out new things. A word of suggestion to rp3 guys. Please give us an affordable and a high quality low maintenance model. Then u ll get more ppl on board and ppl start talking about it in various forums.

A longer video with some narration on how to get the best out of the portal would be great. Also an explainer on power v split power and the relationship to watts and split on the Concept2 would be very useful. Carlos did some great videos a few years ago but there have been some software changes since then.
Good idea! You are right, the portal is changed a lot the last year, starting with the launch of the new version last spring (april 2023) and all the new functionality added since then. Now (summer 2024) we do have the beta release of the Advanced edition, with these extensions in this video. Next to the crew and reporting functions. In the RP3 App we have the Power field which represents the power of the stroke. "Split Power" is a calculated field with the C2 formula, from spilt to Power, to sort of compare those. The C2 values are adjusted for higher stroke rates, because of the loss of energy. That is the reason the difference increases when the rates are rising. You can read about it in one of the whitepapers: rp3rowing.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Findings_and_conclusions_Static_vs_Dynamic_power_calculations_1_0.pdf
@@RP3Rowing thanks that’s an interesting white paper. Is that the same Stef Broenink who is about to race the 2x in Paris?
@@anthonyward5329 yes it is!

How does the app recognize the strokes you do in the boat? Or does it just tracks the speed via GPS?
It uses the accelerometer sensor to 'feel' the strokes. Next to the time and distance via GPS and so speed, you can see stroke rate. And heart rate via the BT connection. The basics are provided in the Advanced edition.
@@RP3Rowing thank you.
Не хватает импульса в конце гребка.
Two times world champion and leader in world cup series. Favorite for gold in Paris. Perhaps there is the right momentum in the end of the stroke. Don't compare it with static indoor rowing, where there is often too much momentum in the stroke and you need to perform a sit up not to fall off.
what he ist showing has nothing to do with rowing.
Indeed: what Stef is showing is the effect of moving body weight on the movement and the forces. Training on a static erg is very different concerning bio dynamics comparing rowing in the boat. Rowing the boat is NOT moving up and down, turning weight, pushing and pulling the footplates for not falling off the erg. Moving body weight is using different muscle groups.
As near to perfection as can be? Great commentary covering the essence of the sport. All learners should know that the combination of appearing to be applying little effort while actually applying immense power with technical perfection is the secret?!! Surely these brothers and the NZ pair are the greatest rowers / scullers crews of the modern era?
You are right, but don't forget the current /new generation of rowers. We are at the start of the next phase in rowing. Things are changing. Like some of the bigger changes in rowing before, like change from wooden boats, rigging constructions and big blades. Rowing dynamics is about to make a leap. You can already see the first signs of this movement looking back to the Worlds in Belgrade. Paris Olympics will be showing even more.
Why is her back rounded? I thought that was a no no
Who did tell you that? You could look at all the videos from World Rowing. Take the A-finals on the last few world championships. And count how many rowers do have back rounded. let me know 🙂
From what i know it can be a bit dangerous, like deadlifting with a bent back, but in the boat it allows for a little more power by curling the back and straightening it during the drive. Most people don’t do it and probably shouldn’t do it unless they are at a higher level where every bit of power counts. That’s just a guess. I have only been rowing for a couple years.
@@enderawesome4521I just think that the mobility to have a straight back when rocked over is quite hard and most rowers tend to have levers such that it is harder and so they just don't have the mobility and haven't learned as it isn't so important
It is a no no, just some rowers often find that in that postition they can generate more power with less effort, although it is dangerous and you can get hurt
There seems to be much more variation in automatic 500m splits than what was experienced whilst rowing at a steady pace.
please explain some more. Is this about this video or your own workout?
I see there is often a small tick at the start of the force curve - i get that too when I row. What is the reason for that?
it is anticipation of the start of the new stroke, just before the chain movement turns and the flywheel starts to accelarates again. You can ignore it, has nothing to do with your drive. It probably will we gone soon.
@@RP3Rowing thanks for your reply. Yes it’s a bit of a distraction for me and I see a few people on forums questioning what it is. I think it would be best to remove. Thanks
Seems to be working
ice pack?
Front turn so smooth, I'd love to know her outboard
What about when that rail bends? And all the moving parts don’t work. The upkeep. That’s the issue. Lot’s can go wrong.
We are glad to see more and more rowers, specially on the highest and all competitive levels using RP3 for training and preparing best for regatta's. These moving parts are ment to simulate the rowing movement like in the boat, and it works for all of them.

@@RP3Rowingdank voor de verduidelijking 👍🏻
Oh ok. I was going to guess it was the testicles of the last guy she defeated.
Rp3 is good but at the end of the day the erg world record will always be based off the C2.
RP3 and C2 are different. Both are rowing machines where you can perform a rowing movement. But those are not the same. There is a scientific document that explains it: static vs. dynamic. Perfect to go for the world record on C2, but more and more on water rowers are moving towards RP3 for a reason. Olli Zeidler explains it. He is going for gold and optimizes his chances with RP3, as world champion Stef Broenink (in mens double) and his Dutch teammates do.
@@RP3Rowing yes, people are using both, a lot of clubs will have one or two at their sheds. Though globally the dominant erg in national programs is still the C2 and they are the benchmark for testing. Most countries have transitioned to C2 on sliders, eg - Aus (women’s centre typically use without sliders), US, NZL, England, Ireland etc. Benefits are the same as RP3 of movement underneath, as well as being able to use multiple linked together to mimic on water crew rowing. Olli does seem to like RP3, which is good and I’m sure they help. He’s also a genetic freak who was dual world champ, dual European champ, dual Dimond scull champ prior to sponsorship (this while using a C2). The RP3 is a good tool, though I stand by the original comment, the ergo world record will always be based off the C2, supported by Olli himself with him publishing his C2 erg PBs (as well as many many training sessions) prior to sponsorship and during his above notes achievements.
@@Mdgfievf the transition to C2 on sliders says it all, but still is suboptimal (the mass is still to high). You are mentioning IRL and NZL who just switched to RP3. not like the Dutch who are just RP3, but will be going there as the results will be more clear next year. AUS, GER and GBR probably will follow after Paris, because LA will be 1500m which demands other dynamics (even more dynamic rowing and higher storke rates). I don't know your rowing background and your involvement with the big (and smaller) national rowing programs, but I can assure you: things are changing. C2 records are great, but not directly related to World Class (and other levels) rowing on water. The different physics are undeniable clear.
@@RP3Rowing RP3 are very good machines and I’m sure that IRL & NZL are utilising RP3 as an alternative for many off water sessions, however for records and testing it still based off C2… especially during the trialing process.
It is in the changing season
wow
Have noticed my posture improve following few weeks on RP3, definitely related to how the core is engaged in the dynamic motion. Feel stronger and more controlled.
I was just curious how this compares to the concept two ergs -- how much does the fact that the flywheel isn't connected to the base effect the experience? Thanks!
also see the short posted last week: th-cam.com/users/shortsPD-g7OEDY1g about difference between static and dynamic ergometer. Rowing in a boat is actually NOT moving up and down, like you do on a static erg. Rowing is getting the boat come and push the boat away again, with the rower at almost constant speed. So watching rowing is an optical illusion. Forces are different on a static erg. Rowing dynamic is being connected with the flywheel and the feet, like in the boat.
@@RP3Rowing Ohhh I see -- so the rush and swing are visible here; its like the slides I have on my concept2
@@justanunverifieduser2075 yep C2 on sliders does a pretty good job of being like the RP3....except when you keep hitting the front and back...and get really annoyed.
@@andyhall7032 pick one rate and then never change it ever lol
Colour scheme is excellent, looks sleek.
Would it be so hard to record someone explaining what these are? Familiar with wobble seat but never heard of coastal.
wobble seat is quite new. Not many people are using it. Coastal Rowing is a new rowing format, where you go our from the beach, thruogh the waves, so a seat to easy stay seated is nice.
what the f**k has she got around her neck? It looks very "ambiguous" in any case😧
i think it is ice in a pantyhose. Is was a warm day in Bled in May
I was wondering what difference there is between a concept2 with slides and this machine. Cool stuff
you are allowed to chose what you want. If you look to rowing dynamics (forces and movement of bodyweight) and want to get better as a rower, it is an easy choice. I would say: if this does apply, just try it!
You obviously don’t have clue about rowing, stick to the CrossFit
@@cannibalholocaust3015 RP3 is very commonly used in national teams, as well as basically all well funded school, club, and university teams as well. Dynamics are useful as you need to connect with the handle in a similar way to on the water which helps with technique. If you're wondering about concept 2, they also offer a dynamic erg, as well as sliders for their regular erg which both achieve the same effect of the RP3, though for standardised erg testing, the regular concept 2 is still the go-to option. I'm not one to go and defend companies, but your comment is just dumb.
@@the_shadow_11100% agree with your comment
this allows you to develop boat feel better than a c2.
I am trying to understand... is this some kind of paralympics?
what do you see is happening? hint: bodyweight movement is impacting forces and dynamics.
this is what the majority of indoor rowers still doing. See the effect of moving body weigth when changing from dynamic (like in the boat) to static in this video. Watching rowing (on water) is an optical illusion. You think rowers are moving up and down in the boat, but it is not. Rowers themselves have the more constant speed and letting the boat come and push the boat away again. That makes the boat go: a dynamic movement of the rower and boat in the 'system.' Training dynamic is similar with moving in the boat. This video shows it.
....it's showing the difference between static and dynamic rowers.
It should work on any machine with the same principle, all it does, is keep the flywheel going, the score is a representation of the flywheel's speed?
But it is not. It does not work the same on every machine. With some machines it measures the movement of the chain. That is often the reason people pulling towards their chin, because it calculates more movement and then you have get a better score. But that is NOT how rowing works. You can't pull your oar or scull towards your chin. Yeah, do can, but the boat will stop going. On all RP3 machines the measurements are concerning the acceleration / deceleration of the flywheel, with are all exactly the same (with 0,009% accuracy) and certified by University of Ulm (Germany).
@@RP3Rowingbut concept 2s work by calculating the speed of the flywheel and if you pull it to your chin the same result will occur as on the this machine. The rp3 also calculates the split based on the flywheel which is affected in the exact same way, so I don’t see this “huge innovation”??
@@RP3Rowingthat’s what someone who didn’t doesn’t actually understand the difference would say…
Her technique on the machine is slightly different to that in the boat. In the boat she connects, maintains body position against leg drive initially whereas on the machine she opens the body a little sooner. Watch at 0.25 speed.
agreed
