We LOST a PUMP; general UPDATES
This video is part of an ongoing series - like a vlog - about our project aiming to RESTORE soil fertility in Valle de los Pedroches in Andalusia, Spain.
We are located in a landscape called Dehesa in Spanish. It is like an oak savanna and is said to be very biodiverse. However, much of it has been overgrazed and the yearly drought of 6 months with NO RAIN makes recovery difficult. Many good practices from other climate zones with frequent rainfall DO NOT WORK here and have contributed to the bad situation in the past.
First and foremost we are restoring soil fertility and DO NOT AIM to deliver a product into any market at this time. We are not doing agriculture or ranching in order to produce something and turn a profit. We see PROFITABILITY as an OUTCOME that will emerge ONCE we have restored the land.
Learn more about our project at: www.caimito.eu You might also visit our shop there to support this project.

Some simple guidelines for commenting:
- Questions are far more helpful to other viewers than suggestions
- You are watching past events and we might have solved issues or moved on already
- Most people live in temperate climate zones with ample rainfall and good agricultural practices from there might not apply on our land.
- You are watching us learning and we all want to enjoy the journey and knowledge acquisition. Please refrain from telling us how something has to be done as your situation most certainly is vastly different than ours.
- Understand that culture, rules and regulations vary around the world. Be respectful when speaking about the people you see in the video.

Not sure if this can work with your car/trailer, but instead of super duper high capacity pump and rotating sprinklers you may have poor mans emergency irrigation? Meaning: get 1m3 water containers (or whatever you can move with your car to a higher elevation), put it on a trailer. Pump water during the day. Drive to the higher elevation in the evening. Attach some pipe to the above cistern (you can drill holes in it, make it more fancy with multiple pipes etc... Let it flow over the night. If the trailer/car can not take 1t, fill just a half. Yes, I am aware it is a drop, but then it may save at least some trees.

Would it not be better to limit your planting based on how much you can adequately irrigate, rather than planting so much that you have to ration the water? It seems that all your plants are suffering to some extent from a lack of water. You could have had a small thriving area around your house this year if you had not stretched yourself so much. In each coming year, you could spread out, improving adjacent bits of land. It would mean more or less ignoring the rest of the property, but does that matter? You already accept that it will take many years for the land to recover. When things don't turn out well, you often say that you were experimenting. But the truth is, many times, you can foresee an outcome simply by using logic. You don't need to waste time, money, and energy to confirm it. Logic would have told me not to buy cattle in an area where beef was not popular. It would have told me to work on the land near my house first so that I didn't have far to travel each day to do whatever I needed to do and to easily be able to monitor my progress. I know this is not an attempt at creating a profit-making business (though I think you would have done a much better job if it had been), but I wonder why you seem so determined to make it a loss-making enterprise. Nothing you have done so far has been wholly successful, mainly because you have spread your resources so thinly. It pains me to say all this because I have been following you from the start, and I really want your project to succeed. I hope the rain comes soon.

Yes, absolutely. However it is a bit hard to know ahead of time. There is data for commercial plantations of commercially interesting crops but not for a "Miyawaki forest" or similarly unusual things. NOW we do have that data and are planning the next step with it. Learning unfortunately is not the same as copying someone else. It is expensive too. This is a very unique environment and there are many things we try that nobody here even attempts. Desertification and consequences are just accepted and people expect the government to do something about it. There is a lot of learned helplessness. And yes, we are ignoring 42 hectares of land out of the 45 ha we have :-) Beef in Spain is VERY popular. The issue with any animal products is legislation and unwilling public administration that favors big buyers squeezing the supplier who has the animals. Butchers buy packaged meat from wholesalers instead from farmers.

Could you say a little more about what you mean by "structure" in the soil? The hardpan, below the harrowed 15cm, is a 'structure' of sorts. One might say that the top 15cms have a 'loose structure'. Do you include the structure created by a healthy soil biome, especially the binding of soil particles by bacteria & fungi? You do seem to be suggesting that the tap-root of the sunn hemp might create, or be part of creating, this 'structure'. How so? Do you mean it simply as a sort of natural 'rebar', preventing, or a least slowing, soil erosion resulting from rainstorms? A sparse cover of albeit deep-rooted plants would do little to reduce surface run-off (and likewise little to reduce the compaction caused by the rain striking on the ground). Nor would it do much against the force of a canalizing torrent. Is it to reduce the gradual 'flow' of soil, as slowly draining water moves through the soil, very slowly carrying the soil along with it? TLDR (again..) Also, since I know nothing about the growth cycles of this plant, I wonder if the tap-root is not developing exactly because you are watering. If it is reliably receiving enough water, why expend the energy of pushing down a deeper root - if this is an adaptation for drier environments, with less (wobbler-) water in what is the rhizosphere/root-depth of other species? Without the deeper root, it might lack the stability for greater height. The seasonal conditions for germination might be very different than the seasonal conditions for growth, in both height & root-depth. [Lack of growth as lack of need for growth] Further, all living things have limited 'senses', limited metrics, and I have seen it well-argued that a sufficient & regular supply of water during the hot & dry season can persuade a plant not to set seed/fruit. It is experiencing wet Springtime conditions, unsuited to these processes, ie Water quantity/frequency may be the metric for seasonality of growth/maturity, rather than a metric of light/heat. If there is still plenty of (Springtime) water for photosynthesis, it can still afford to feed exudates to its buddies in the soil, investing in its sub-surface environment, rather than the alternate, genetic investment - in seed/fruit? [Lack of growth as seasonal investment confusion] Lastly, plants with strong tap-roots are often permaculture-planted precisely because those roots can penetrate hard-pan, improving water-penetration. Wouldn't a native plant with a tap-root survival-strategy actually rely on this ability? Adapt to endure the absence of water, or adapt to securely find that water? As a spur off from the 'seasonal investment confusion', might not sufficient & regular watering of these plants actually be a way to 'hack' the natural process of seasonal investment? If you can 'persuade' the plants to employ their Springtime strategy, and keep on processing sunshine into root exudates, feeding/growing the plant-specific/suitable soil-biome, you might usefully accelerate the soil succession. Granted, you won't get majestically tall plants, but you might get something more beneficial to the soil. Consider: The bacteria-laden root-nodules of clover gradually accumulate Nitrogen, which is then drawn on by the plant when it transitions to seed-setting. Using unseasonal watering to keep the clover from triggering the hot/dry-season response of seed-setting would allow a significantly extended period of Nitrogen accumulation. If being used as a seasonal cover-crop, it could then be terminated, releasing the increased Nitrogen into the soil. There seems to be a lack of consensus on the 'as above, so below' relation, eg. Does a close mowing of the clover, and loss of photosynthesizing leaves, cause a corresponding loss/abandonment of root? If so, then termination would not be necessary for an at least partial release of Nitrogen.

My conclusion for our situation is to actively manage succession and force certain things to happen. Nature is a complex thing but we do know a bit about what will follow if we do X and Y and so I think we can use that to our advantage. Industrial agriculture does have all the knowledge and tools required. One can argue about the goals though and instead of using yield as a goal we can pursue a different one as well. We have now learned a lot about working with plants and animals and I personally have gone from bystander to something else. As shade is a key element we can plant fast growing trees, water them directly and basically do the same as for a regular commercial plantation to kickstart the process. Then we can add other elements towards building a forest instead of keeping a monoculture of just one tree species for commercial purposes.

Hello I have mixed feeling about plowing the field. You manage to get something but far to sparse. If you plow deeper, you will need eavier everything to break the soil. Archimed teaches us than the more you apply a force on the ground with a tool to break it, the more you get the opposing force on the weels to compact it. Please be as modest as usual, create food for the biology on the top layer and life will manage. You need to find a way to have jungle like cover. I will again recommend mineral fertilizer with doze adapted to the available water. (Organic one looks not available and mulch is also out) You still need to find a way to get successfull cover and get the cover always more successfull. I believe you can rely on roots to get a good soil and break compaction, but there is so much way to do.

If it warrants mechanical strength a B and H resin joint with associated filling compound fitted over it will greatly improved survivability.

Be aware that in some specific conditions of temperature and flower species, it can be clogged up. This, coupled with the dropping temperature, leads to some problems. Just be aware of this 🙏🏽
