Various interesting snippets from my work at Onshape. Essentially these are single-take rehearsal sessions as part of presentation prep, practice, or just jamming with Onshape. I won't always provide much context to the videos, though they tend to focus on a couple of key aspects and therefore might provide tips/tricks, background, or (hopefully) some entertainment.

15 Years of Solidworks and I Switched to OnShape. The One thing that driving back to Solidworks is the Cloud Lag and Delayed updates to a simple Drawing Change. I Loath SW and Now OnShape. If I couls afford Simmons or E I would be there.

is it possible to get a copy of Autom8 on OnShape? I did a search but nothing showed up. I want to create a wing that has dyhedral, sweep and the airfoils are at different angles of attack along the wing (BSLD Bowers style)

Is there a keyboard shortcut option for opening up keyboard shortcuts? I found this extremely useful with SW to get everything dialed in how I like it, but it would be even better in OS if I could bring the same shortcuts to all my work stations.
Once you have your shortcuts saved in your user preferences, they will follow you to wherever you login... Even onto a borrowed one, or in a cyber cafe (do they still exist?) The preferences are not stored as registry keys, or downloadable plugins.
@@gregbrown-onshape7555 I understand. It would be helpful for me if there was an option to setup bringing your preferences up using a keyboard shortcut. Right now that is not possible in OS and it seems like a simple fix. I just turned my zebra stripes on Z and it is great. Thanks!
@@5Lax you can just leave your user preferences open in a separate browser tab! Then you can use tab shortcuts to swap to it or just have it up on a separate monitor

It's still early days and I'm converging in on my favorite shortcut setup. I'll be sure to share what I come up with! For now Shift-1 to Shift-4 have new duties: Zebras, Perspective on/off, Translucent, Shade with edges. On my Macbook Pro these are easily accessibly to me without too much effort. For those interested, I also use Shift-Q for high quality mode, Tab for iso view, Option-X for measure tools. e is now Edit curve, and b is bridging curve. The next most import is s for the shortcut toolbar where I have heavily used features plus a handful of my custom features. That's the main stuff. I don't really use keyboard shortcuts for features like extrude, loft - I tend to use the iconsof rthat stuff. It is the in between things (graphics) that really speed me up.
This is such a powerful and well executed tool Greg! It turned out great. This opens the door to so many new workflows. For once I'm actually looking forward to returning to work on Monday! Cheers!🍻😁

It’s available now. Try making a new document. Existing docs take a day or so to catch up.
I just found out how to force the document to update to the latest version of the OnShape feature library. Press the Trash can Icon to "delete" the document. The just moves it to trash, you will immediately be given the option to restore the document. Click that, and it will say that the restored document is using an old version, and give you the option to update. I know that sounds like a hack, but beleive it or not, this is the "official" work around.
Edit Curve not duplicating the original makes me think of adjustment layers in Photoshop (or how RAW photo editors work) - apply editable adjustments but leaving the underlying data unchanged. @10:48 so you're saying that s**t rolls down hill? :)

This is awesome, so good to see OnShape making real, tangible imrovements to the surface modelling tools. I'm only intermediate level when it comes to surface modelling, and I always struggle more than I should have to to get curves and sufaces to behave the way I want. This tool, and the custom features you added last week, really open up surface modelling to intermediate-level users like me. Thanks Onshape!
There's a more to Onshape's surface modeling that many realize - so I'm more than happy to keep peeling back the layers...

Hi Greg, I am an apprentice engineer & fabricator learning how to use CAD. I am looking to design and fabricate my own motorcycle frame and rear swing arm. The motorcycle will be electrically powered but will be based off the geometry of a Yamaha WR450. If I could find a naked chassis cheap enough I would just build a jig off of it to replicate mounting holes and pivot points etc. however this is not a likely find. Would you be interested in helping me in laying out the geometry of a WR450 on a sketch on Onshape? So far I have found relevant stats on rake, wheel sizes and wheelbase aswell as fork travel if that helps.

The quality of this tutorial is simply outstanding. Both how to create these high quality surfaces in multiple ways, and how to use the curvature analysis. Brilliant. I've only been using onshape for about a week and puzzling over these functions. This really propels it forward quickly.

Thanks for the tutorial, much appreciated. I have a question: When Zebra stripes are switched on in the second example, it looks like you are only achieving a G1 result i.e. the zebra strips do not flow between the surfaces as I would expect to see. The splines have a G2 constraint, but the surfaces conditions themselves are set to "match tangent"? I come from PTC Creo, wherein you must also select the surface conditions to be G2/Curvature or G3/Curvature acceleration, is this not the case in OnShape? Looking at the Zebra stripes on the second example, I would not be happy with this result, but perhaps I am missing something? Can you shed any light on this aspect of Onshape please?
This video was shot before the Boundary surface feature was able to take G2 boundary conditions. But that has now been addressed. Loft could have been used (it does support G2 continuity on the profiles as well as the guides) Also since this video, the Bridging curve has been enhanced to support G3 (Flow) connectivity, thus producing a degree 7 bezier (single span) if you use G3 at both ends. Thanks for calling this out. Again this channel might have little things like that as it is not intended as a formal training resource - it is me building, testing and demoing. In any case, I'll put it on my list to update this and release video with G2 boundary surfaces, plus some other curve tricks that have been released in recent times.

hey - fantastic - again... I'm lapping this up - I know what im doing tonight anyway. Question - to turn this into Laser cuttable templates - how do you extract the profile of the diagonal rib-halves into a 2d frame as you need the one side of the taped cut shape in the front, but the other side in the back... if and when you have time id love to see how that's done in the drawing tool.
this is amazing. I'll need to play around with that. one thing I will want to look at is to orient the frame to the skin rather than have a sandable excess of spar as it will likely be covered by a strip of balsa to assist with foil adherence.
Thanks for the comment. It's funny that doing this in Onshape (digitally) takes me back to the high school days of having the sheets of balsa pinned out on my paper plans... The techniques I used in Onshape for both the wing and the fuselage (other videos) were based on those experiences!
So why exactly do we have sharp crease.
The sharp crease is a design exercise. In plenty of cases the primary surfaces will want something like this, and it is (well I think so) interesting to see how Onshape handles it. Final manufacturing surfaces will have a lot more manufacturability treatment done to them (so you don't cut yourself while brushing past such a design!)
Wrong title, to say the least. The video barely addresses how a motorcycle transmission works. Instead, it mostly talks about CAD, in very vague and unstructured fashion. Useless.
I'll be happy to go into all of that but it will take far longer than most people will enjoy. I hope you can get something from my videos though - as the descriptions clearly state, these are just me playing around, prepping CAD demos, they are not intended as engineering design classes.
