I don’t think tracing is a bad thing. When you are first learning how to draw, one of the things you learn is tracing at times. Usually to help understand contours lines and shadows. It just seems like when you trace others criticize that it is not art or a person can’t draw. Adding details you own way is what helps it come together and show your own unique side of art.

As much as I like this tutorial it is hard to follow... sometimes you totally don't mention what you are doing, video speeeds up and there is no mention that you create another layer what do you do with it etc. So a little struggle as for tutorial.
