Our Recommended Cabin Gear
OREI American to European Plug Adapters-So many cruise ships are equipped with 220 European plugs which are useless unless you have the right adapter. These are what are in our bags every time we cruise or travel to Europe. They come in an affordable six pack which you can find at this link: amzn.to/44ixS0U
Strongman Tools Strong Magnetic Hooks-A couple of these 6- pack set of hooks are always with us when we cruise. Each individual hook can hold 30lbs of weight and is ideal for hanging coats, hats, and even the hangings shelves described below . Get your set of these useful magnetic hooks at this link: amzn.to/3UDrVbJ
Whitmor 5 Section Closet Organizer-Unfortunately, drawer and shelf space are sometimes limited in some cruise cabins. That’s why we always bring at least one of these inexpensive closet organizers which gives us plenty of room for our folded clothes. We’ll usually use a couple of magnetic hooks described above to hang these from the ceiling in the corner of our room. Here’s the link where you can get yours: amzn.to/3w3GvQn
Our Recommended Camera Gear
DJI Osmo Pocket 3--You’ll usually see Tracey using this in almost all of our videos. Love this wonderful, small and versatile camera. Basic Camera: amzn.to/3UDJJDF Creators Combo: amzn.to/4beP6OP
GoPro Hero12-This is the best action camera we’ve ever used. Whether taking videos on the Zodiacs in Antarctica, snorkeling in Papua New Guinea, or scuba diving in Bonaire, this camera is always in our hands. Find the link to get yours here: amzn.to/3UkTcy1
Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap-If you still carry a DSLR or Mirrorless camera like Jan does, this is the perfect strap to use. What is great is that this fully adjustable strap can be configured to be worn across your body, putting the weight of your camera across your back as opposed to your neck. Plus, it offers a bit more security when traveling through high pick-pocket areas. Get your Slide Lite Strap here: amzn.to/3xW6pWR
Our Recommended Cruise Wear
5.11 Long Sleeve Shirt-This long sleeve shirt is perfect for excursions in cooler climates are perfect for this long sleeve shirt and the multiple, large pockets is the reason why it is Jan’s go-to shirt when flying. Passports and boarding passes fit effortlessly in the breast pocket. Get your 5.11 Long Sleeve shirt here: amzn.to/3ybg5wr
UNibelle Linen Beach Coverup #1-This is one of the two coverups that are always in Tracey’s luggage. Not only is it great for hanging around the pool, but it is also great to put over a tank-top when out and about in port. Get your UNIbelle coverup here: amzn.to/44ngiZu
UNibelle Linen Beach Coverups #2-This is the second coverup that Tracey always has on the ship. Just like the coverup above, it’s great whether by the pool or into the port. Get your UNIbelle coverup here: amzn.to/4a5j8n8

Also, while we were disappointed with the atrium and the main dining room, we liked the food court and love the Ocean Boulevard. I have a question. It looks like y’all have been on several different cruise lines. Which cruise line is your favorite?

    • @janandtraceytravels
      @janandtraceytravels 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We have been blessed to have been on 10 cruise lines--we have 3 more booked in the next 18 months that will be new to us. We think that cruises are like clothes. What you wear may not fit us and what we wear may not be your style. When we were younger and had kids in the house, we loved NCL. In fact, it is the cruise line that we have sailed on most (and have 2 more cruises booked, sans-kids ). Carnival and MSC receive lots of angst from cruisers. But for families or those on a budget, they are lines that are good fits. Although we love the Yacht Club and think it's probably the best value at sea (spoiler, we just got back from the MSC Seascape in the YC and will be bringing those videos soon). We've sailed once on Royal Caribbean in an Owners 1-bedroom suite and thought it was a fantastic deal. However, as we are now in our 50s, we are gravitating towards smaller ships. Our one cruise on Viking Ocean was fantastic (less the food) and look forward to finding an itinerary where we can sail on them again. They have perhaps the nicest (free) thermal spas and the ships are gorgeous. That they include excursions in every port is definitely a plus. We sailed Explora Journey's Explora 1 and have the Explora 2 booked and were blown away. Our only concern is that when this new line begins to fill up to 100% capacity, we worry that some of the venues might become too crowded. Regent was the first cruise we ever did on our honeymoon years ago have taken a total of 5 cruises with them. They are probably the best cruise line, but have pretty much priced us out of the market. So, to (finally) answer your question. It probably comes down to Oceania and Atlas. We've done three cruises on Oceania and 2 of the 3 have been amazing. Our Oceania Regatta cruise had plenty of ups, but something just wasn't quite right on that cruise. That cruise review comes out next week (fingers crossed). We did Atlas twice including our Antarctica cruise which was the best trip of any type we've ever taken. It's a small expeditionary ship with only 150-190 passengers. We just loved the vibe of cruising with a small intimate group of active, well-traveled passengers. Sorry to wear you down with a long answer. But it's a question that we find to be very involved. Thanks for watching!

      Wow! Are your B2B's on the Sky or what other ship is it? In September 2026 we are nearly doing 5 S2Ss. We'll have a night between the 3rd and 4th cruise and 4 days between the 4th and the 5th. Cruises 1-3 will literally be getting off at one terminal and having Uber pick us up and taking us to another terminal. 77 days sounds fun. We assume you've done something like this before? True. However, unless I'm (Jan) mistaken, the Sky has always operated under NCL and had previously been refurbished at least once. Additionally, as we noted, we've sailed on MSC which, like Costa, is an European cruise line largely focused until recently on the European market and our European cruises on the line had more 110 outlets. It's not a deal breaker or even a hard negative--just an observation. Thanks for watching!

    The food can be really good on their ships. From my understanding it all depends on the head chef and how much of the staff changes over between itineraries. With the included excursions, it's hit or miss how good they are. I have been on some that were phenomenal, and one where I thought it was a waste of time.

    • @janandtraceytravels

      The port is about 7km from the area where both the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque is-but it is in the other side of the strait. So, I think your bet is to either take a taxi or even the metro. There is a metro station about 300 meters (ish) from the port Tracey took the metro in to the spice market and said it was easy. The security when we were there wasn’t any more severe than most any ports. Have your ship card (don’t remember if we needed our passport also-take it along in case. ) Once you get to the Haggai Sophia and Blue Mosque lines can be long. However there are always your guides in the area drumming up business and the can get you in (including the Cisterns which are also nearby) without much wait. Be aware of the times of prayer as you will not be allowed into either mosque while they are going on. You can stay inside-as we did-if you are already inside, just cannot enter. Have a great time and thanks for watching.

    Nice video. U guys had done your homework. Frankly, you can outperform our local guides. Chinatown has its name for the convenient for westerners if I understand correctly. The chinese name 牛车水, literally translated as bullock cart water. Chinatown got its name from a scene where many bullock carts were carrying water from house to house as there was no tap water then. I do hope tourism authority change Chinatown's name. In western world, it carries a different connotation. Instead of making easier for westerners, the name create some confusions. It is like having an American Town in the heart of NY City.

      Thanks for watching. We debated quite a bit on what we thought about the concierge cabin and while there are some perks, they just didn't seem important enough to us. We do have friends, however, who always book a concierge cabin every time they sail Oceania. It all comes down to what you want in your cruise experience. Thanks again.

    We just got off the Mars May 12. I’m with you, 15:26 the food was par. We r not big drinkers so we just purchased. The cruise shuts down at 10 ish. My big down was the coffee cups!! as Americans like to drink coffee I took two sips and it was empty very frustrating, especially to me in the morning one of the big big pluses that I’d never seen was the laundry mat on each floor complementary that was a complete score. We could’ve brought a quarter of what we bought.. I think we definitely will go back on a Viking but with saying that the food was not just Yum Yum Yum we didn’t eat a lot so call it whatever. I cannot go from America back to Europe. I never got adjusted to the time change never so we did not get to enjoy everything.The Mars ship. Next time we’re gonna keep it a little closer so a time difference is not so severe of seven hours. and I wish they had a like a little commissary. I wanted a bag of chips. There was nowhere to get a bag of chips. I know that sounds silly, but there was nothing even close to that small little commissary would’ve been just lovely even if you had to pay a little something for it trust me there’s pretty the room on the ocean cruise ships to put one .thumbs up for Viking Ocean

      Thanks so much for not only watching our video but taking time to provide such meaningful comments. We would encourage you not to write off Europe. We now try to take a couple days for a pre-cruise before we board a European cruise specifically to help assuage the effects of jet lag--which can be a bummer. Of course, taking a transatlantic cruise to Europe also helps gradually adjusting to the time difference ;-) Europe is so rich in culture and so many wonderful experiences, its one of our favorite travel destinations. Once again, thanks for watching and for your considerate observations!

      What we thought we knew about cruising and food has been challenged greatly by the post-pandemic cruise experience. In our experience, there was a period through late 2022 through 2023 in which we felt food across the industry was sub-standard. We had sailed on the Oceania Marina and thought the food was exceptional. We have an upcoming review of the Oceania Regatta in which we were disappointed with the food. Yet, we've seen food in 2024 begin to pick back up. Our NCL Prima had some flashes of the cuisine we used to enjoy. Our Atlas Navigator trip to Antarctica had exceptional food as did our Explora Journeys. We just completed a transatlantic on the Oceania Vista and the food was also back on top. (Yes, we have a backlog of lots of content to get out). So we like to think that the industry is finally correcting the food and we do look forward to another cruise on Viking. Thanks for watching and caring enough to comment.

      We've heard that Viking has great food on their other ships. We found that food can be very time-specific based upon the ports that they provisioned their food and who was the head chef for that cruise. We were on another premium cruise line which is known for their cuisine and found the specialty restaurants lacking. Yet, friends of ours had great food on the same ship just a couple months earlier. Hope for the best. This ship is so wonderful that even with the food we had, it isn't going to dampen your experience. Enjoy your cruise!

      One more question: because the room is high and a little forward, did you notice much movement when sleeping? I’m bringing Bromine and those behind ear patches (just in case).

    • @janandtraceytravels
      @janandtraceytravels 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question. Yes, you will feel a bit more movement precisely due to the reason you stated, but we didn't have what we would consider tough seas on this particular voyage. However, last fall we did a cruise from Scotland-Dublin and the seas around the northern part of Scotland had about 5 meters of surge which even on a large ship could be bothersome for some people (we were on a much smaller vessel so we really felt it). Modern cruise ships all have stabilizers which may take a lot of the of the side-to-side rolling out of the equation--but the ship can also yaw and pitch as well as roll which the stabilizers don't necessarily remedy. But depending upon how the surge/waves are striking the ship you will still have motion (if it is likely to be really bad then you'll start to see barf-bags being put out by the elevators). We have used the patches before but not Bonine (which is what we think you meant). They are effective. Now, we are NOT doctors, but we recommend cutting and wearing half of a patch. For us (n=2) a full patch gives us very bad cotton mouth. If you are not sure how you will react, put a 1/2 patch on before the ship casts off and have a great cruise.

    • @OldBroadAbroad
      @OldBroadAbroad หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@janandtraceytravels Thanks for the tip about half a patch (I will not hold you responsible if I have to up it to a full patch 😆). And glad the smoking area is sheltered. And I will definitely check out the spa. Any tips on the best ways to cover up by the pool or spa, but be able to slip in discreetly? I’m a bit over weight and quite modest. Just thought you might enlighten me to how people dress around the pool and spa. I hope I’m not bothering you with all these specific questions, but you are uniquely in a position to inform!❤️

    • @janandtraceytravels

      When walking to and from the pool as well as around the pool, I (Tracey) usually have a beach coverup on. We have added links for the the two that I use in the description of our Viking videos (you'll have to copy and paste the link into your browser--TH-cam doesn't allow clickable links anymore in the descriptions). Both of the pools on the Viking Sky have ladders to get in and out. I simply take off my coverup and walk to the pool and get in. The reality is that no one really cares, especially when you are in the water. Just have a great time!

    I"m so surprised about the food. We just got back from a 7-day Mediterranean cruise with Viking Saturn and we absolutely loved the world cafe. So many choices, so fresh, so interesting. We ate all lunches and dinners there, and ate breakfast at Mamsens, which was totally outstanding for breakfasts. Maybe our expectations are different from yours, and maybe we aren't as much "foodies" but we just loved the world cafe and Mamsens.

    • @janandtraceytravels
      @janandtraceytravels 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no. We would never assume that our tastes or expectations are unique as I'm sure you did have great food on the Saturn. We operate on the idea that food from one ship to another--even on the same cruiseline can be different. In fact, even from one cruise on the same ship to another these things can change. All we can do, especially when we've only done Viking ocean cruises once, is report on our experiences on this one ship on this one cruise. The reality is that we do love Viking and are more than willing to try it out again (and again and again). Thanks for watching and caring enough to comment.
