Old Conrail Engine on Rough Tracks
On February 13th, 2024, I decided to take some time trackside on some old Reading Railroad trackage, not too far from my house. But rather than Reading Company power on Reading trackage, it was a beautiful Conrail Blue locomotive in operation. These liverys are becoming extremely rare, so rare that I would estimate under 15 locomotives are still in this paint, so I was glad I could shoot it.
The snowfall of 2/13/24 provided some photogenic opportunities. At our first spot, I decided to video the Conrail engine coming through the snow covered cornfields, our second spot was a side-angle of the locomotive while they struggled with crossing failure, and our third location was in the Alleys of East Greenville at the old Ex Reading EG Station.
I hope you enjoy this short Reading Rail Films Production, Thanks for tuning in.

Awesome video, love the shots. I was riding the train that day, in the departure I’m on the platform side. Pretty sure I was wearing the 2102 shirt that I got back in July of 2022 from the July 2nd Rambles of 2022.
That's awesome. Thanks for the comment.
This is some top tier videography. Showing the details of the location, water dripping, etc. A+! Do you know where the other conrails are?
Thanks for the positivity! Lots of ex-Conrail engines are either out of service, or no longer in blue. Your best bet would be to search something along the lines of "old Conrail locomotives" in the TH-cam search bar. Let me know how it goes!
Excellent video love the conrail Gp10.😊
Is that a Custom Steam Whitsle on 7554 that sound strange
Believe it was the crews custom whistle.
there's an old conrail alco floating around philly. still in the colors.
Last Conrail-painted unit I saw was one of the aborted D8.5-40CW units, and that one was on its way to be scrapped. Crazy to know there are so few out there now... even just 15 years ago there were still so many running on the NS. Anyway, it's cool to see a unit this much older. Nice cinematography, it really captures the atmosphere of a warmup during a Midwest winter.
Thanks for tuning in! Yeah, these things used to be all over the place in the U.S. It's crazy how quickly they quite frankly vanished over the course of a decade or two.
Your channel brings forth some interesting family railroading history. My maternal great grandfather was Yardmaster at the Philadelphia Reading yard during WWII, when smooth and efficient delivery of goods and services was critical to the war effort. Thanks for keeping memories of the Reading alive. Subscribed.
Exposing rail history has always been important in my book. There is so much forgotten pieces of rail history in the east that I feel should be noticed once again. Hard-working men spent all their time and effort to build these rail lines centuries ago, and I believe it is important to respect the blood, sweat, and tears it took to build amazing feats like the railroad industry. Documenting the rail history is one way I find around doing this, reminding those men that their hard work was not forgotten. Cool stories, and Thanks for the comment!
@@ReadingRailFilms You're quite welcome, and thank you!
Great consist with 4004, 1700 etc! I got 4005 with a WFRX Mac last year. Greetings from Tennessee.
Long live Big Blue!
Conrail is the best❤❤❤
is she short hood arranged? the one I work with is from a similar vintage but is PRR and its long hood arranged.
Yes, this locomotive is short hood arranged. Railroads back in the day based the arrangement on their beliefs and what is best for the crew, hence why locomotives with deep history may be different from one another.

@@ReadingRailFilms I apologize. That regulation has been amended, since my days, as a supervisor. In my era of railroad management, it had just become a mandatory requirement.
Hi! New subscriber. YT put you in my mix today. Great wintry and scenic railfanning video.
Thanks a lot!
Nice to see some conrail locomotives. Still active. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, they are fading away into history day by day. Thanks for watching!
SEPTA should reactivate this line.
They own pretty much everything through here, but there is not much revenue that there is to make.
very nice, great catches and a cool old loco :)
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the vid. My old stomping grounds.
Glad you enjoyed it

Fantastic catch of that classic unit
Thanks for the support. She sure is a beauty!
Great video here! You can’t beat that power or that scenery, nice little train they had in tow as well!
Appreciate the comment! There isn't much more of these operations anymore... Best to document now!
I enjoyed the video, but I had difficulty reading what you were describing to me!
Thanks for the feedback. Was there not enough time for you to read, or is the font to small, or other? I would appreciate a note for future reference!
This type of Pennsylvania was the norm when I was a kid. Now it is hard to find. So much new housing and retail. I used to watch the trains go through EG and south and cross 663 I remember when the trains were daily down to Philadelphia Those days are long gone
Yes. Those days were the days, and many trains traversed this once busy line long before Philadelphia developed all these housing networks way out of the city. I'm planning on making a production about "then and now" on the Perk Branch. Look out for that in the future.
@@ReadingRailFilms I really would love to see that
Very nice video! Not just trains rolling by. The scenery and composition are excellent and tell a story. My only suggestion is to get a wind sock for the microphone.
Thank you for the support! Yes, I truly need to get my hands on something that will block wind. I've been working on things, but I've also been busy. Thanks a lot!
Awsauce!!!!
great work
Great catches and awesome video

Love the video i would like to see more of the East Penn
Lots of trains here very busy
Really cool place
8:17, I was standing to the right of you when this happened. I had backed up and let my tripod record but some dude with a camera did not move. Luckily he did and prevented a serious accident!
yes, i remember. He was hella close, I'm pretty sure the engineer was pissed judging by his hand movements.
@@ReadingRailFilms Oh yes he was, I saw the movements lol. I'm all for people getting good shots but not at the expense of safety
Great night catch and excellent video
Glad you enjoyed it

Thanks for watching.
I presume that consist is more than 425 could handle comfortably thus the diesel backup.
your assumption would be correct. Steep grades on the Reading division require deisel backup for 425, especially with wet rails, which they were the day this was filmed
Neat video. I like the headlight effect.
My special needs son loves trains 🚆🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤🚂 he thinks they are highly underrated forms of transportation and that they should be used more often than airplanes ✈ and motor vehicles 🚗🚘🚙🚖🚕🚐🚍🚌🛻🚚🚛🛣🚌🚎. But at the same time he also doesn't want the railroads to have to much work; for them to be overworked, overloaded, overburdened, or run into the ground. He also thinks that the entire Bethlehem branch line should be rebuilt and used again for both freight and passenger trains. But he does not want that to be wishful thinking he wants it to be a reality!
Very nicely done. @9:50 the smoke is what would get my mother so bent out of shape on washing day. We lived at Buffalo NY near the Lackawanna steel plant RR yards. cica 1949-54. I loved it, I was 6+ y/o.
Is that a fouled K5LA?
Yes.

What a beautiful voice she has! ❤
Nothing tops a steam locomotive for me. And I mean NOTHING! All these diesel engines of today look alike to me. A steam engine has it's own unique self and it's own personality.
first lets go, btw that's some great shot of an amazing loco !
