I’m a middle aged weekend warrior who just loves to kayak. If I can do this stuff, so can you!
Canyon Creek, WA, Nov. 3, 2024, 700 cfs, L Scorch--Brooks Foster kayaking
November got off to a fantastic start in 2024, with a generous rain storm that brought Canyon Creek into a nicely padded medium flow on Nov. 3, 2024. It was about 700 cfs and dropping slowly. We had a huge group so I'll forego the usually name callouts. You know who you are.
I'm so impressed with the skill level of these paddlers, some of whom have only been kayaking for a few years.

We had a large group for this Fall lap on the Orletta section of the White Salmon River in SW Washington. The sun was out, the air was warm, and the water was low. Quite a different experience from high water runs in the winter. Having three first timers in the group provided some excitement, but overall it was like a relaxing, playful visit with an old friend. A highlight of the trip was watch...

Sept. 1, 2024. 1.5' at Husum. Pyranha Ripper 2L. I have had a lot of fun over the years leading other paddlers on their personal first descents. This was Henry Sollitt's first run on the Orletta section of the White Salmon River, and this video captures some of our conversations along the way, discussing lines and talking smack. Thanks to Adam Ernesti and Andy Farquar for joining us for the beg...

When the creeks are low in August, Orletta to Husum provides. I'm still thrilled to have found a boat that can confidently run class IV and throw tailies in any decent eddy line. Thanks to Scott Woodhouse and Stephen Cameron for joining me. I forgot to turn my camera on for the BZ seal launch and Husum, but otherwise this video is pretty complete.

We were lucky to have a second weekend in a row with the Deschutes at Benham at 1750 cfs or more which is the highest it has been in July since 2020 so I packed up my trusty Scorch X and Prijon Release and hit the road Saturday morning, driving out from Portland in time for a 2:30 pm putin at Dillon Falls. 95 degrees out with 60 degree water and the best flow in July since 2020. Meadowcamp was rollin'! Thanks to John Cramp, Cobey Weemes, and Kevin Hill for lapping it with me on the weekend of July 13 to 14, 2024. This footage is from all three of my runs. This was my first Truss run since November 2023 so I was a little rusty, but the level of 2.8' was perfect, and I enjoyed putting the Scorch X through its paces. The one where I admire Adam's brand-spanking new Dagger Indra, stubbornly practice my half-slice moves while my creek boater buddies roll their eyes, violently backender in Thrasher just to remember what it feels like, and get stoked when the entire group follows me down the frequently underestimated center-left line at Toby's on an unusually warm Spring day on Canyon Creek, Washington. Cheers!

Canyon Creek seems like a perfect run for a half slice. The drops are big, but pretty easy once you know them, and there is a lengthy warmup section. Also I've done it 50-100 times and it seems like a good way to spice it up. But which half slice? The Ripper 2 L piqued my interest as a playful half slice that can still capably run creek lines, and I opted for it with this run in mind. Thanks to...

After three months of snowboarding it was a perfect day to get back in the kayak and shake the dust off. The White Salmon was at about 3.6' at Husum (and 3.1' at the Truss gauge), making for a nice medium flow on the Farmlands Section upstream of the Green Truss. Nice footage. How do you like your large scorch? What’s your height/weight?
180-85, 5'11". I love the L Scorch. It has served me well, and you can see how it performs on many other videos on my channel. The M Scorch felt too small, and the X is awesome but feels a bit narrow and unstable compared to the L. The only thing I don't really like about the L is its heavy and unbalanced weight when carrying. I have a ton of foam padding around the knees in the L because its knee box is so cavernous. I use a single seat shim and have the seat moved back towards the stern. That makes it feel more responsive but also a bit more grabby so ymmv. It's an extremely capable and high performance creek boat. Fast, edgy, tons of rocker, boofs great, good volume for smashing big features, good outfitting (once customized). I love it.
@ thanks for responding/feedback. I’ve been in a 9R II large for 5yrs or so and have been eyeing up the scorch or scorch X too). I’m 6’1, 195 so I think it’s sized appropriately for me. I’ll have to demo one. I like moving fast and slalom type paddling/river running in WV/western MD. I like the narrower hulls pyranha makes so the X is also intriguing. -Cheers
another great vid! appreciated sir!
I'm impressed, as well. Thanks for sharing this beautiful canyon with us!
I paired watching this with listening to an extended version of "Riders on the Storm." It was perfect!
I’m 185, waka og, stoke, or burn large? Going to run V
@@brianluisi7616 that’s great! OG or Scorch L. You’re probably a little big for the Stoke, and the others should be easier to paddle. Whatever you choose, make sure you get it outfitted properly with air bags and pads in all the right places. These hard chined creepers require a lot of control and are very responsive.
The first one ☝️ is a new 🆕

The water looks high for late July. Is this a dam release?
@@powskier yep. The release is pretty consistent in July. It’s intended to serve irrigators and manage the environment in addition to recreational interests.
@@bfosterkayaking What about August?
@@powskierit’ll probably linger above 1500 for the next couple weeks. As long as the air quality isn’t too bad that is a low but enjoyable flow. Here’s the gauge website panel I use: www.dreamflows.com/graphPanel.php?rid=168

Beautiful run. What run is this on AW? I'd love to travel up that way someday. There are a few Canyon Creek runs showing on AW and I'm hope to know where this run is.
www.americanwhitewater.org/content/Project/view/id/94/
I've been thinking of getting a large for this reason, how much do you weigh? If you don't mind me asking
I’m about 180-185 pounds without gear. At my weight the L is fast, easy to turn, and runs lines really well. It’s easy to squirt to about 45 degrees. Harder to get it above that. I haven’t back entered it, but my hips do go under the current quite a bit, as is the nature of a half slice. I have my seat back and wish I could put it back further at least to see how it handles. It’s a really fun boat. I was surprised by how progressive the rocker is since that isn’t the modern trend, but activating it helps it squirt and the stern has a long planing surface that feels great at speed. The Ripper 2 M squirted incredibly but didn’t run lines well for my weight. The L Rewind is too big. The Ripper 2L hits a nice sweet spot for my size.
Thanks for sharing this! Gorgeous run:-)
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for your support, Zach!
Great video! The run looks awesome!
Thanks! Yeah, I think you'd really like it. This is the first time I ever put on to run it without running Hagen Creek first. Another group did two laps. We did one and continued a couple miles down the main Washougal to enjoy the huge Big Eddy rapid and some fun big water.
Right on! I'm surprised I haven't heard more about the Washougal! Looks like there's a lot of great ww on it! Do you run any of the other sections of the main?
@@jeremywells4478 here's some video of Hagen Creek, which runs into the North Fork Washougal, and the Big Eddy section of the main Washougal, which is a short distance below the North Fork confluence. th-cam.com/video/-2oI6TDM6EQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HnX5Yc5T8oWyIa-Z I have run some easy downstream sections of the Washougal with my kids. There is a tributary in the headwaters called Stebbins Creek that is interesting but not as good as Hagen so doesn't get run much any more, and it reportedly has some wood issues. There are several other sections of the Washougal that get run with some regularity, but not by me.
Thanks Brooks! That looks rad too! I definitely need to get down there!
Do you have a seat position preference of centered or back for the Machno?
Definitely centered, not back. The stern is rounded and has progressive rocker that is not designed to carve the way newer stern designs are. The Machno paddles best from the central volume and chines around the knees.
did you scout that first ?
No scouts on this run but I have scouted many of these drops in the past. I’ve been running Canyon Creek since 2001 and paddlers regularly share information about wood hazards when present so it is usually possible to run Canyon Creek without a scout.
Such a versatile boat 😊 lovey R2L
I know, right? For a boat as playful as it is, it runs lines so well. I'm looking forward to seeing what Pyranha does with the ReactR when it finally hits the market. www.thepaddlesportshow.com/pyranha-reactr/
awesome!
Nice one brooks. Thanks for sharing. Also, inane samurai roll at the drop below behemoth! So cool
Interesting you compare the Scorch, Brooks. I'm 6'2, 200lbs, but broad build. I'm actually considering replacing my Scorch L with a Puffy for next season because I prefer the fit so much. Haven't to try them on the water yet, but from everything I read, the Puffy has a lot better initial stability than the Scorch with just as good secondary. Hoping my weight will tame the bobbing a bit.
I think the Puffy is a great option for a guy your size. The Scorch L measures and paddles narrower, which reduces its primary stability compared to a wider hull. The Puffy is a sick boat just a little too wide for my M/L frame. *btw if you want more stability in the L Scorch and haven’t tried it yet, I recommend removing the seat pad. I did that in my Scorch X and it made a big difference. You might also try moving the seat back. That should make the stern perform a little more like that of a Puffy.
@@bfosterkayaking I actually built the seat up some - one of the things I hate about the fit of Pyranha's outfitting is the deep bowl at he back of the seat ;-). I didn't get to try the Puffy or normal Steeze, but the OG is one of the most comfortable high volume boats I've been in...just not fast or fun enough. If I was doing a lot of creeking I'd have one, but I'm up north in high volume water. Thanks.
Well done!
Pretty dope run! Kinda wish you had the video playing at normal speed though and still had the slow-mo where you did
Thanks, I can see why you might say that. Maybe next time I will edit my slow mo clips as replays instead of splicing them directly into the action. I have several other Canyon Creek videos on my channel that you can check out if you want to see more.
nice water, looked cold.
The water in the White Salmon is always cold, but the air was in the upper 40s and we were comfy in our dry suits.
Dang that eddy at the top right of crunch anyway 😂 Very nice lap. 2k is such a lovely flow
Lol. Agreed 100%. It's not the first time I've had to spin a 360 at the top of Crunch because of that eddy.
Beautiful upper zigzags line
Now if only I could figure out the left line at BZ. 😅
awesome! thanks for the vid!
Yeah, buddy. You're welcome, and thanks for positive words!
That was such a nice stroke on kahuna! You were half way down when you finally pulled it 🤙🏼🔥🔥
Thanks, man! I love that move, and it’s even more fun running it direct as opposed to coming out of the eddy. I just started doing it that way.
great vid!
Thanks, man!
Right on
Started looking at the LW recently and trying to decide whether or not is runnable in an oar rig. Seems like it might be but even more so as an R2
I have never heard of someone running the LW in an oar rig. I think that would be much more difficult than in an R2 because of how tight and technical many sections are. I recommend you contact Dan McCain since he has done it in an R2 more than anyone else I know.
That's a beautiful river! Great paddling...the Scorch is such an amazing boat!
You said it, brother! Can't wait for my next run on Canyon Creek when the rains finally bring it up!
