AKIRA: Manga vs Anime - Read It or Watch it?
The ending just proves how hoggly light thought of himself, and that if he didn't win his way... it wasn't worth winning at all. All he had to do is write in HIS NOTEBOOK that his police buddies open fire and kill everyone in the warehouse for him... or any number of better ideas. But, he wanted to be slick and win by outsmarting everyone. His greatest strength was also his greatest flaw.
Awesome video! I think the original anime and manga both have there strong and weak points, and I totally agree people should probably watch/read both. I know you didn’t cover Trigun stampede in this video, but I did not enjoy it very much, and I would not recommend it to someone trying to get into the series.
Yup Stampede is not very good. I covered it in the nightow video if your interested. We will see if there is a season 2....
@ Ya if there is a season 2 I would still give it a watch. I will check out your nightow video for sure!
Well, the fact that the guy who created the manga created the film is kind of impressive
Yeah having to juggle both would be mad difficult.
I didn't know L didn't see Misa's floating hair in the manga. That makes a lot of sense.
Yeah those little things get lost. Not that it was very important though.
10:15 wtf? Worst take in the video 😭
Yeah I can see that. The openings didn't really match the rest of the OST though.
Do both just pretend it ends before the last 3 episodes and cut like the 97 version of Berserk 😂
It's super funny to me that Ohba said that he and Obata had no themes in mind. Yeah they winged the apple motif and the anime made that stronger, but there are a lot of themes. I like how DN presents various viewpoints like the shards of a kaleidoscope. It's deep enough to really sink into and debate about it, and entertaining enough that it never feels preachy or forced. Even so, I think everyone can benefit from throwing away the "The curtains are just blue" mindset. Assuming the author is a genius on your first go through is way more fun anyhow, and makes criticism more interesting. Also, for anyone squirming at what I suggested, art is just as serendipitous as life. While Ohba may not have had much symbolism in mind with the apple, all the Catholic imagery throughout fleshes it out. You'd be surprised how motifs emerge without the author being aware of it until it's too late (queue the Jungians), even when they plan things out. Plus, that mindset makes anime like Kunihiko Ikuhara's works utterly impenetrable. It basically atrophies your brain, as I found out when I first watched Revolutionary Girl Utena. Sidenote: the Mexican dub also rules. Sidenote 2: I also read the manga through the All-In-One Edition. Sidenote 3: No, I don't really think of Light as a fascist. He doesn't fully fit that bill from what I remember (it's been years since I've gone through it, so maybe on my reread I'll think different. In the real world he definitely would be but as for how the world works in-universe, not quite. He certainly approaches it at the very least).
Well said my friend. Im pretty sure Ive heard this before with a lot of mangakas. It seems like a lot of the times they are just winging it, but perhaps they are developing themes and motifs unconsciously. Like maybe it's on a subconscious level. Humans are weird like that, and this story was really only done by 2 people. Its like why did you do that? Then someone says idk, but maybe they do know they just haven't explored the thought in depth yet. Mexican dub? That sound fire lol. All in one is the way to go! It was easier to take notes. You peep the additional stories as well? Did I say he was a fascist in this video? LOL I dont think I did.
@breakingtropes I think the two keep it vague just to not ruffle feathers and seem more neutral, cuz then they'd be asked what they had in mind, which would ruin the fun of presenting multiple views. I'm mainly thinking of Near talking about how even if God existed and presented to him His morals, Near would still decide for himself what's right and wrong, which is a crazy line to see written in a series whose author says he had no themes or morals in mind. And yeah, the Mexican dub is very beloved, much like the American dub. I even prefer it over the American one, especially when it comes to the voices of Light, Ryuk, and L. Also no, you didn't call him fascist, but that's a reading I see from a lot of people. I don't think it's necessarily wrong or completely devoid of accuracy, but Light lacks certain aspects I've seen Umberto Eco describe when it came to Italy and William L. Shirer with Nazi Germany. But again it's been a very long time since I've gone through Death Note. Light certainly embodies the strongman archetype so valued in fascist movements. I also wonder if the authors had Aum Shinrikyo in mind as well given the literal cult following that Kira gains. Sudden wanton violence by a person who believes themselves to be a deity...it just makes you wonder. Probably not, but still. Edit: Also yeah, I checked out the bonus material. I very much appreciated the epilogue. Really ties everything together. It's certainly a messy series, but I've come to appreciate messiness over the years, like with Mawaru Penguindrum.
Am I the only one that doesn’t dislike near and mello not saying their better than l but dang
Na, from what I hear quite a few people did, is what I realized while making the video.
30:59 near actually did it… he straight up made Cheap Kira commit self delete
Lmfao love this comment. Cheap Kira was indeed cheap.
if matsuda's theory is true, this kid made 2 kiras sakujo themselves. near's based af.

Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho: Two Shots/Noru ka Soru ka Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files - Two Shots / All or Nothing
That censorship is so funny
Really that whole scene is kind of funny lol
I've watched the anime a couple of times, and the new 2023 anime once. I've read the three deluxe editions of the manga, which covers Trigun, and the first 6 volumes of Trigun Maximum. The manga has it's good points and there's some stuff I find really interesting, but I find the manga to be extremely difficult to follow at times and I'm not really sure how I feel about it up to this point. I do like both anime adaptations, though.
Yeah, those panels in the manga are such a pain to read through at times. The anime is just more organized.
That ending, screw you man xD
You can't screw someone who is dead!!!!
Only 120 chapters 💀 loves your videos though
Thanks!!! Much more to come.
Honestly if you really want to get the full experience. I say watch the anime until L death then read the manga
Yup this is acceptable. I would add on by saying, make sure to read Ls death as well.
The scene where L wipes Light's feet reminds me of Jesus stooping down to wash His apostles feet. Of course one of those apostles is Judas who betrayed Christ. Jesus and Judas were actually very close friends but Judas betrayed Him. L kind of the good guy here is serving Light who will betray him. And though L was lying about light being a friend despite what the writer says I believe there is some truth in that. Light is the only person Ryuzaki probably ever felt close to. The only relationship in his life that could even come close to being considered friendship even though he didn't consider light an actual friend. Also after Ls death you've got near and mellow to take down Kira. A little symbolic of L coming back to life similar to Jesus resurrection after His betrayal.
Yeah I was under that same impression, until I read that interview with Ohba and really until I read the manga. L just seems more determined in the manga, so it makes sense for him to lie. But, I get it. There are for sure religious undertones in that scene.
The mentality I have come to have is to enjoy mangas and anime adaptations as two completely separate universes . It works so well to allow me to enjoy a story in its fullest. Akira the manga is so much of a whole world experience I get lost in. And Akira the anime is just awe inspiring and an artistic and cinematic masterpiece
Well said my friend.
it's simple - watch it.
Is it though?
@@breakingtropes of course dawg, the scene in which mikami writes first names in notebook so hard that he had to walk back to the desk is fuckin hilarious XDD, you won't get it in manga, also manga ending sucks imo
its sorta sad Near sorta just doesnt bother beinf mad at mello for killing most of his team
Hmmm yeah, I think maybe it's just because he's so locked into the case??? Or he knows that being emotional will put him at a disadvantage, kinda like how Mello is.
theres also a kira after c who got farther but was trolled by ryuk
Yeah that was way after the manga. I liked the main character of that story, but I wish it was longer. I don't really see it as part of the original story though.
•Every time the bell rings in Death Note I think of the Taco Bell commercials where the bell rings people stop what they are doing and go to Taco Bell. Then I end up wanting Taco Bell. •Actors playing the part of Misa and Light: Director to actor playing Light: Hug Misa menacingly. Action. Actor playing Light hugs actress playing Misa: 😀*while laughing almost evil* Actress playing Misa and Director: 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♀️ •Lion King: Instead of “everything the light touches is our kingdom.” It is “Everything the Death Note touches Dies.” •Trying to read subtitles and the rules of the Death Note while watching Death Note is like trying to read the words of a silent film. There would be a scene of people talking them the screen would show the a grey background with the words the people said. U have to speed read the words before the next scene. It also reminds me of trying to take notes in class while being a slow writer.
Not to be rude. But anime came to the U.S. in 1961, the movie was called "Shōnen Sarutobi Sasuke." Anime became well received when "Tetsuwan Atomu" and "Tetsujin Nijūhachi-gō" aired in the US in the early '60s.
Wow did not know that, will have to look into those works. But I meant it as bringing anime to the west for its generation and for a lot of people. It was one of the first works that got me into anime. Part of me thinks these things come in waves. I remember reading somewhere that anime was not as popular in the west before Akira and also it was not as accessible. But my memory is a bit hazy on this.
@breakingtropes Here are the American names "Astro Boy" and "Gigantor". Also Speed Racer (Mach Gogogo) was aired in the US during the 1960s.
@breakingtropes Also, Robotech (Macross) was dubbed by Harmony Gold in the mid-80s and aired on syndication.
@@miguelsonofzeus Harmony gold was ass lol and terrible at dubbing from what I know. Astro boy, speed racer are of course well known and were popular in America. But did their popularity stick up until Akira made its way to America? Not to mention these works were tamer compared to Akira and more mature anime. I would say that Akira was one of the main works that brought the mature aspect to American audiences. But, I am just speaking from my experience. It be interesting to know how many people viewed anime like astro boy and speed racer as anime, and not just regular cartoons. I had no idea speed racer was anime as a kid lol.
@breakingtropes I believe Akira was the first adult oriented anime to be released in the US. Speeder Racer and Astro Boy were meant for kids, and they were profitable. Speed Racer's Japanese dub and manga were actually meant for general audiences. Akira was artistically way ahead of its time for the market it was meant for. Its detailed animation, dubbing, and storytelling were what made it more popular than it was meant to be.
First time I was introduced to Akira had to been in 1994 or 95. My friend's brother had gotten a some VHS tapes for his birthday one of them was Hokuto no Ken (1986) and Akira. And of course we watched them when our parents weren't home lol. My buddy and a girl we knew were grossed out but I thought it was cool.
Having it on VHS is dope AF, your friends brother was ahead of his time. Yeah it was a bit horrifying to me when I first saw it lol. But, super interesting.
Been drinking orange juice on ice ever since I was a kid lol
Taguro would be proud.
The movie is like a spoiler less trailer for the manga. It grips you by playing with your emotions, it has a good soundtrack and it is reaaaaal purty.
The manga is way better in the aspects you didn’t like. The paneling is togashis strong suit so it flows much better
Yup this does not surprise me at all and I'm sure there is a lot less running going on.
@@breakingtropes the anime came out when the manga was ongoing so it was their way of not passing it
@@beanos9 Makes sense. If I ever do a manga vs anime on this, Imma need to have a discussion with you lol.
I did both i feel like the manga tells its story better but obviously if you dont like reading you can just watch the anime
Well said!
Bleach would be a good one to cover but it is lenghty
Geeez Im already in the middle of another long Shonen so, Imma need at least a 100k subs for that LOL. That would be a good one though.
@@breakingtropes lol i look forward to it
Bro lost me saying the intro music isn’t good. There bangers
Man people ride for their intros. How about if I say that it doesn't really fit with the rest of the soundtrack?
It actually inspired the concepts behind Hunter xHunter, which makes sense because it’s created by the same Mangaka.
Yup a lot of parrels between the two for sure. I know Gege was inspired by Togashi as well.
The best arc in yu yu hakusho

The first manga I ever dropped. Started off promising but got worse the more I kept reading. If I remember correctly I dropped it about 80-90 chapters in
Wow. I guess everything aint for everybody....
If you campare the landing to the recent MHA ending. Not only does YYH stick the landing, but it actually does summersaults and cartwheels.
Huh was the ending to MHA that bad? I stopped watching right around the overhaul saga. I will say Shonen usually has bad/rushed endings unfortunately...
I want season 2 hope
For which series?
Monster @@breakingtropes
Read it! End of discussion
Distress shows that there were efforts to try and assassinate Krista though potentially. The fact bandits in similar styles were sent to kill Mikasa (an Ackerman) AND Krista (a person with royal blood) is enough for me to think they're actually contracted by the royal court.
Hate the second half of the anime they can press it down and change the ending but the first half is great and I just love the ending to the manga all of lights just desserts got to him at once
I'd say read the manga in full then the anime. It's amazing to see the story come to life in the anime but the manga is the real deal here. I found the manga first and the anime later, the differences stand out more that way (I think) but you can really appreciate what you're seeing.
29:18 Knives has nothing else left. He lost all the plants. All he has is Vash and what Vash believes by the end. He chooses to end his existence at the tree because it’s the closest thing to Vash he could do
Also a huge mistake to rush the action. Some of those panels are so DENSE in storytelling, you really underplay them
Sometimes one panel contains three or four separate things to talk about as per what’s happening and it could turn into a ten minute explanation for one panel
@@brainofjtd Its hard to know what you are talking about in the video. But, If you are talking about the story section, I dont want there to be too much summary of the story. Because if there is, then people won't read the manga. That section is designed to be as brief as possible and I just want to hammer in the differences of the story without explaining everything in detail. So summarizing battles and going through plot points is my overall objective.
@@brainofjtd Yup thats exactly why I shorten it. The overall goal is to compare the manga with the anime, not to analyze each panel or even the manga or anime. But, to analyze the differences more so.
such a good video dude!! keep it up💪🏼
Thanks man. Comments like this keep me going!
The Musical kinda rocks
Okay. Def gotta check that out!
The anime is 100% worth it, I own the blu ray dvds as well as all the manga (in all editions) and the novels :)
Can you make a video of l changed the world novel
Hmmmmm is it good? I don't know about something based on a live action adaption.
@breakingtropes ok can you do the los Angeles bb murder case
@@vihangahiggoda5101 hmmm maybe. Low key you are actually putting on a lot of extra content I forgot or didn't know about lol.
@@breakingtropes ok I understand
Lost Girls OVA confirmed Mikasa's abilities to manipulate the timelines
So essential it was foreshadowing lol. Well shit, they could have made it more entertaining.
@@breakingtropes I know right. That Cabin "Dream" was actually Mikasa's memories of the past timeline(Manga backs this up). Eren(The Founder) cannot manipulate the memories or mind of a Ackerman(proven is S3). So Eren could not show her the "Fake World", that's why Mikasa always got those headaches, because her mind remembers past timelines as well
The levi ova has some of the best ODM gear scenes
Facts. Those scenes in the underground city were amazing.
REEEEEAAAAAADDDDDDDDD BIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLY BBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTT!

Thats what I did too. In fact, it inspired this video lol.
@@breakingtropes lol. Priscilla was on my hit list. She had to go and I had to find out how
@@johnsw224 Right! But now I feel kind of sorry for her. Oh the irony. She was actually kind of a hero.
I don’t really like the new redesigns
The characters? I mostly had a problem with the titans to be honest. I thought the characters looked as good as they could have without Witt being involved.
Literally just ordered vol one from Amazon like 10 min ago I can't not wait 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
