Tampere is a Finnish city and the provincial center of Pirkanmaa, located on the shores of Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi. Tampere is the third largest city in Finland in terms of population and the second largest urban area in Finland with its surrounding municipalities. Tampere is also the largest inland city in the Nordic countries in terms of population. The population of the city of Tampere is 255,066 and the population of Tampere city center is 349,553.
The central part of Tampere's downtown area is located in the lake and ridge area on the isthmus between Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, through which the Tammerkoski flows from Näsijärvi to Pyhäjärvi. Tammerkoski's fall height is 18 meters. The red brick factory buildings visible on its shores tell of Tampere's industrial history. Historically, Tampere is Finland's first and largest industrial city. Tammerkoski's rapids landscape has been named one of Finland's national landscapes. Gustav III founded Tampere in 1779, but the city only started to grow after the middle of the 19th century, when it became an important industrial center. The textile industry was especially large. Since then, industrial production has moved out of the city, and Tampere's economy has focused on services and high-tech companies.
