Day 2 Metal Detecting this Former Farmstead and the The Coins and Relics Keep Getting Older
This was our second trip to this field that we knew had a house on it from at least 1877-1977 . So we knew we could find some nice items from the past century. The first trip netted several Indian Head Wheat pennies and other cool finds, but day 2 blew those finds away as we may have stumbled onto an older area then what we were expecting. Finding another seated half dime, my second Large Cent this year and some incredible relics of the mid 1800s. Thanks for joining us and Let's Go Find Something.

Metal Detecting Remnants of an old Farmstead and getting excited over a first time Silver Coin.
มุมมอง 1.1K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
We are so excited to be able to hit more fields now that most of the farmers have combined their beans. This time we took a couple days to scan a farmstead that was dozed decades ago, but has ties to the late 1800s. The field did not disappoint, with a little of everything, including some first time buttons and a first time silver coin we had yet to detect. Thanks for joining us and Let's Go Fi...

With an afternoon to kill, we decided to hunt a new area some friends told us about. There were a lot of obstacles in the way so we will have to go back if they are moved, BUT still there was a lot to be found . The ground was still very dry and very hard as we had not had much rain in a month, but we scanned it anyways. Some things we knew their identity, and others we are still curious about ...

THE BEANS ARE GONE. The ground is still bone dry, but we are back in a field that gave us old buttons and coins last year. This year it gives us some more of the same with some new surprises. We saw a Facebook post from a friend asking if anyone had a metal detector... And since we have a couple, we offered our services. She was doing a photo session and her friend had lost her ring that went back at least 3 generations in her family . They had searched and had not found it. We also had received 3 in. of rain. So we asked if we could come to the rescue and save the day.... #metaldet...

We got permission to detect around the site of an old church that burned several years ago. We think it may have been detected before, or else the ground was to dry for deep hits, but we still found some unique items and coins. We also were able to introduce detecting to another one of our teens. #metaldetecting #coins #history #oldtoys Looking for Detecting, Panning, and other treasure hunting...

We decided to visit an old church we detected last summer in hopes we missed something. After a couple of hours there, we moved to a timber where there was an old house that had not been lived in for around 70 years. We didn't expect to find any coin there as the previous owners were believed to be poor farmers, BUT we knew there would be relics of history and a lifetime long gone. So sit back ...

      We actually get asked that a lot. I am not an coin expert either, only what i have researched from our finds, but these Seated liberty series were made out of silver and came in Half dime, Dime, Quarter, Half dollar and full dollar. The silver half dimes were minted until they started making them out of Nickel plating, then they were referred to as Nickels, but they came in 2 increments, 3 cents (following the civil war Trime) and 5 cents replacing the Half dime although they were both being minted at the same time for a short while.

      Interesting, we have seen some while visiting antique stores, we will see what happens once i knock some rust off them. It is interesting to see how worn some of them get with all the use and sharpening, but when you are cutting wood for a house and then for a Northern Missouri winter it would get a lot of use. But a lot of them also have stress cracks int eh handle well. But i am looking forward to shining a few of them up, planning to do the same with some of the other tools we found, like the old square handled grub hoes.

    Nice finds, but you might want to spray the coppers with rubbing alcohol, not water. Or just brush them gently. One of them may be an 1877 or 1909 S-vdb, or a 1914D and it will seriously degrade the value.

    • @muddyrelics
      @muddyrelics 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks and thanks for the tip, will the alcohol take off the corrosion build up, most of our coins are from heavily tilled farm fields and have a nice build up on them. We tested peroxide on a few lincoln wheats and zincs coppers that were pretty well gone, but have not tried that on good coins .

    • @jeffersonbacon894
      @jeffersonbacon894 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@muddyrelics I'm not sure it would remove corrosion, but I know water removes the patina and with it the details on a copper coin. Green mountain Metal detector uses alcohol on his coppers and the look pretty good afterwards. I personally use a toothpick (skewer) to clear as much dirt and corrosion as possible.

    • @muddyrelics
      @muddyrelics 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      interesting, We will have to look into that . Thanks for the info. I have started using Pencil graphite and soft wet pencil wood to try to remove some of it and that has been beneficial in taking care of some of it without leaving any marks, has worked on buttons and tokens too.

    Very nice Hunt there. I seen the short video Congrats on the 1900 Barber Quarter. Love the Spoons and Suspender Pieces especially the ones with the Pat Dates. Really good Haul There. I haven't hit a spot like that in along time. Congrats on all your finds. Hope all of you will be able to go back again to that spot. Take Care everyone Crazie Digging

      Thanks. yeah we love anything with dates to show we may have something of age... dont know if we will go back or not, may wait a couple seasons and go back after it is tilled to turn more stuff up.. It was spread out over a pretty large area so there is a chance more is out there.

    I think it's actually called a Runner. But most people call it the slide

    • @muddyrelics
      @muddyrelics 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      i googled both, the slide brought up similar items of age, where as the runner brought up the same concept, only in modern items.

    Nice hunt/finds! Got my oldest quarter this year as well....1900 O, i have the penny (1887), the nickel (1890) and the dime (1875 S) but...STILL looking for that 19th century quarter, so close! Also a bucket lister this year, dug a 1902 O barber half which i was expecting to be a clad half (w/ my luck)😋 once again, thanks for putting out your vids, i do enjoy your hunts!

      We appreciate you watching. This was our oldest quarter as well and the first in the Barber line. After looking up it's value, it is no wonder why they didn't drop and lose them like they do today . .

      @muddyrelics I hear you on the wheels. I've only been out a few times since November. Worked 27 days straight at work. Short handed. Then it snowed. Temps 0 to minus degrees in the mornings here. Right now 4 degrees. I can only do the Southside or the hills here but very patchy in areas. Frozen. Hoping to get out next week. Take Care

    Hey Guy’s nice hunt. Nice coin spill Racheal. Andrew the item with the glass in it is a drip oiler. It goes on a piece of antique machinery. You just fill them with oil and it would drip oil on a bearing as the machine ran. They could be used on hit n miss engines old stamping presses stationary machinery from back in the day.

      thanks for watching. and thanks for the info, That is very helpful. I have worked around old machinery all my life on the farm, and had not see anything like this before. I knew about drip oilers, but had not witness this type. Again thanks for filling in that blank.
