The naivety of toby & josh. It costs more to ship things to dangerous unstable areas even in Europe. Take sending something to France vs sending something to Ukraine even Poland which is stable & generally without conflict is all fine & dandy but once you get the item into Ukraine or France it's two different stories let alone if your "government" is barely hanging onto power. I agree pills of any type shouldn't cost 10 each in any country let alone in poorer ones & especially when it's literally life saving pills like heart medication verse Viagra or something but come back to reality. And as they point out HIV/AID medication is at least in the time of the show a combination of pills that need to be take several times a day for the rest of the patient's life. Aids/HIV still isn't curable. I'm happy to pay 20 a pill especially for something not lifesaving but only life improving so that somewhere else in more need it can be sold cheaper & more priority then where I am but unfortunately there's lots of factors along the way to both places & most if not all aren't controlled by the big bad corporations. Who by way probably help provide jobs to the very people trying to buy the drugs. Unfortunately in reality it's not as easy as toby wants to think or make it.

  • @craighanson-rc1md

lol considering you can't especially back when this was filmed cure aids or HIV be it white or black or purple it doesn't really matter. People though really do over look things in pricing to fit their narratives & I don't believe either the evil corporate guys were directly implying that the president was corrupt or that he knew who in his government or country were. They are just pointing out that there usually higher international taxes on things in Africa or south America then say Europe or the Middle east. Any that's usually because of special unofficial taxes or bribes etc and that's not a black or white thing it's a government stability thing & security thing. I promise you that shipping something to France is cheaper then shipping something to Ukraine particularly now while it's in a war for survival just as this president may feel he is in at this moment yet aids & hiv are not gun fights & bombings in the same way. Also good at getting emotions though. I'm by no ways supporting the evil corporations just stating reality & facts. BTW I'm sure shipping anything to Nigeria or South Africa is cheaper then shipping things to Sudan or South Sudan & all these countries are majority & controlled by non whites. So if there's a price difference between Nigeria which isn't a real stable country but has a government & around 90%+ non white population, while even less stable in a war sudan with its similar factors is probably more expensive. Because there's a war & pirates & terrorists affecting shipping increasing costs & risks across the board.

"Are you implying endemic corruption and incompetence?" "We've gotten reports of that sir" Poverty and corruption shouldn't be shameful or offensive discussions in any policy debate. They're obstacles, factors that need to be considered by any reasonable decisionmaker and stakeholder. Solutions should take this into account: instead of giving millions if not billions for the drugs themselves, perhaps a more impactful, feasible, solution could arise through fighting corruption and improving the source of the problem such as education or infrastructure. You need to be able to discuss it all freely of course, which I think this clip showcased

The scene is nonsense. You don't ask corporations to give away/massively discount, INCREDIBLY expensive products to develop. Though, I am certain, many of you idiots reading this, strongly disagree. If Bartlett is SOOO desperate for these people to get these drugs? Then he should either go to Congress or go to the American people and ask them to fork over money to buy the drugs for these people. And if they refuse. That is that. Going to the corporations and saying 'give us stuff' is passing the buck...pure and simple. These corporations spent 's' loads of money to develop these drugs. If they think that the government can just force them to give/massively discount their products...whenever they feel like it? Then guess what losers? Those corporations will stop developing the drugs...or ANY drugs in these areas. As it will not be worth it to them any longer. And then where will you idiots be when you truly need a new drug? Governments should never, EVER get involved in businesses or economies (outside of war). Because when they do? They always. And I mean ALWAYS...screw IT UP!!! ☮

This is a nice sounding, but ultimately false comparison. Americans don't have a constitutional right to have guns. There are no government agencies obligated to give all American citizens weapons. A person's access to guns is limited by the same thing as their access to medication: money. It just so happens that the former is often more affordable than the latter.

What many of you watching this clip miss is that the way this ends is that the democrats - and even the writers - who are democrats - CONCLUDE - This is the CONCLUSION of this storyline. The conclusion of the writers. The conclusion of the ACTUAL democrats in office - even today. This is why republicans say that the dems are the racist ones. If you don't believe that - search for the conclusion of this scene - which represents both the democrats who write the show - which mirror the sentiments of the democrats in office. The REASON it is wasteful to send drugs to these countries is because the drug regiment requires precise dosages at regular intervals. It would be a waste to give these countries free drugs because they are black........and ergo - don't know how to tell time. This is real. This is real in the show, and it is a reflection of the policy of democrats at the time - whose policies inspired the writing on this show. Black people don't know how to tell time. Ask yourself - which ones are the racists?

People are too hung up on wrist watches that's a TV spoon-fed version of the reality in Africa. Bad infrastructure, widespread corruption and poor education make it nearly impossible to help many of their people. In fact, the Bush Administration and many pharmaceutical companies went to great lengths to assist them, with some very beneficial results. However, in the end only the people of these nations can save themselves.

As it turns out, this “reasoning” was total nonsense (although it really was a common attitude at the time this aired). Programs like PEPFAR and The Global Fund have vastly expanded access to ART worldwide in the past 20 years and there are now millions of HIV+ people in Africa being treated. In fact, many people on therapy in Africa have proven to be *more* “compliant” when it comes to drug regimens than their US counterparts. Thankfully, HIV drugs have improved to the point where people only need to take one pill a day so all the discussion of watches is out the window anyway. P.S.: Tony Fauci was a massive part of changing all this, including challenging the notion that people in the “developing world” weren’t capable of effectively adhering to complex drug regimens

Considering the language they’re speaking, it’s likely that he’s the president of Botswana, which at the time (over 20 years ago now!) was undergoing a crisis whereby despite economic recovery and growth in other areas, rural areas (which encompassed more than 50% of the population at the time) were becoming more impoverished. Supplying over half your nation with individual reliable timepieces is one thing, hard and costly to begin with, and may take years, but then consider that a single bump, splash of water, thief or battery issue would nullify the effects of the treatment. Toby is saying that because of these issues, the spread of the aids epidemic would only be minimally effected, not that the treatment wouldn’t be useful on a personal basis, nor that people in Botswana cannot tell the time.

One of the best parts of this show (and they didn't always succeed at this) was that they gave everyone their own points of view honestly. The drug companies didn't start AIDS, they didn't misinform the African people many of whom believed AIDS wasn't spread by sex, some of whom believed sex with a virgin cured AIDS, etc. They found the treatment and it cost them half a billion dollars. If the companies gave the drugs away for free, they would likely be smuggled and sold to other countries anyway, which creates black markets and undercuts their ability to recoup their loses in research and development (which slows the next drug). Economics is hard. You can't just look at the people with the stuff and demand they give it away.

My probably stupid solution: Set up a non-profit charity that takes basic digital alarm clocks, and reprograms them so that when you hit the snooze button, it starts you off on the med timeline. When the alarm goes off, it displays a symbol that correlates to the bottle with the correct pills, with a number next to it saying how many to take. I wish this guy was still alive to be in Black Panther. He’d be perfect casting for T’Chaka.

Len Cariou was brilliant in this small role.

Even if they can't tell the time, I bet each village/community through out the country has a radio or a TV and each person can count to ten on their fingers and tell different colours apart. Have a public health official do daily addresses at the correct time and have the people take 2 pills from the red box now, then later in day address the country again to tell them to take 4 pills from the blue box.

The time is also in the bottom right of most tv screens.
