Route 66 Missouri: Start to Finish
Route 66, known as the Main Street of America, stretches from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California. The 2,400-mile journey spans eight states and three time zones, passing through small towns, sprawling cityscapes, and diverse terrains.
Established in 1926, this legendary road was the primary migration route for midwest farm workers during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. By the 1950s, Route 66 was the main highway for travelers heading to Los Angeles. This led to the creation of local businesses along the route.
Through the influence of literature, music, and film, Route 66 has come to symbolize the essence of American exploration and adventure. Despite the efficiency of the interstate highway system, modern freeways lack the nostalgia that Route 66 embodies. The old roads that make up the Main Street of America continue to attract travelers who seek the enduring allure of the open road.
Route 66 Travel Guides and Tips:
There is an amazing free app called the Route 66 Ultimate Guide, which I used daily while on the route: route66ultimateguide.com/
I loved having the Route 66 passport! Collecting stamps was so much fun. I found our passport at the gift shop in the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum. Here’s a link with all the info you need to purchase one online or in person: www.route66navigation.com/passport/
I also had the EZ66 GUIDE for Travelers, which you can find here: amzn.to/4cLapsj (Amazon affiliate link). I found it at the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame & Museum. The maps and explanations are much more detailed than any other resource out there. It’s not always obvious where the route is because it’s not just one road from Chicago to LA. You have to know where to go. I usually studied the maps the night before so I would have an idea of what the next day would look like.
Google Maps can be helpful if you turn on the “avoid highways” feature. Without this feature enabled, Google Maps will continually try to send you back to the interstate, which you are usually trying to avoid while driving Route 66!

In 1973 I rode the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek, BC. It was 1200 miles of unpaved road, a lot of gravel and pot holes and dust. Everyone who drove it had cracked windshields from small rocks kicked up by oncoming cars and trucks. The idea of a mobile phone was only in science fiction books.. Glad to see vast improvement in road. That's a long trip. Hope you got to see a lot of Alaska.

Now...that fudge place REALLY OWNS its identity, don't they? They have more guts than I ever could have! I adore your family travels!!! (Sigh...) Still wishing I kept on going after Amarillo. I only drove the available parts of Route 66 from Santa Monica Pier to Amarillo, TX. My personal "must see" stopping place on the route was visiting the home my Mum and Dad once lived in the '50s. The drive back home was great...butt I missed the Uranus Fudge Factory!😆🤣 Continued safe travels to you both! Aloha!

Haha! The Uranus Fudge Factory was hilarious. If you ever visit Missouri, I definitely recommend checking it out. There are so many interesting small towns in there. It's great you got to see your parents' old home though. I love stopping at places I have personal connections to. I am working through editing the rest of my Route 66 footage, so eventually you will end up seeing some places you recognize! 😀

Thanks for the thanks, Lidia. Though the northern roads here are rough, the politics are not as rough as those south of 49 (but they are certainly taking on that tint in the last few years); if it gets really bad down there (isn't it already?), come on up.; all you need is a good winter coat and a willingness to learn ketchup chips aren't the worst thing in the world. Two great things: your laptop and other devices will auto-adjust for your physical presence in Japan. Suddenly all these far more accurate websites will pop up and LOADS of relevant YT videos etc will be flowing into your recommended feed. This opens up hugely helpful things like pharmaceutical information and other more accurate language translations. It's strange that google translate seems to fail on the exact same device when here in England but when in Japan it works so much more accurately. Odd. My last tip is directly adjacent to the above-- google translate is fantastic once you've done some due diligence on the pharma/medicine/health websites and know what you're actually looking for, what symptoms you have etc. You just need to be really really accurate when working with google translate so you can describe symptoms REALLY accurately.

Oh, Lidia...you are proof positive to every Canadian that ketchup chips are our secret weapon to keep you Yanks in line. I'm not even a fan of ketchup chips but we're raised here on them and in a pinch I will eat a bag or a portion thereof. You should have bought a Neilson Crispy Crunch - its kind of like a Skor crossed with a butterfinger but it pre-dates both and is subtler, too. Of the immortal Coffee Crisp.
