One-Way Valves for Crankcase Pressure
Racing engines for control line team race and speed often require a pressurised fuel system to keep up with the demands of the engine. The preferred method is to use pressure from the engine's crankcase to pump up the fuel tank and force fuel through to the needle valve at a consistent rate. The downside of this method is that when the engine is stopped, fuel may sneak into the crankcase through the pressure line and flood the engine. To avoid this the tank may have an airlock, and/or the pressure line can have a one-way valve that permits pressure from the crankcase to the tank, but blocks fuel flow in the other direction.
Here's how I make them.
Credit for the design of the valve goes to Grant Potter of Australia - a former F2C Team Race World Champion.

Irvine XR15 Part Two - Test Runs
มุมมอง 1562 หลายเดือนก่อน
A few days ago I put up a video of the conversion of this Irvine XR15 from RC car format to Sow Goodyear racer format: th-cam.com/video/QwSWnN4RMQc/w-d-xo.html Now it's time to test run it and to measure performance. The aim is to get it turning an APC 7x4 at around 20,000rpm in flight, which means exceeding 18,000rpm on the ground. Test flights will confirm whether this is enough to drag a Slo...
Irvine XR15 Part One - Goodyear Conversion
มุมมอง 1772 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've takan an obsolete 1990's RC car engine and converted it to race in control line Goodyear Team Race. It's an Irvine XR15 from England - 2.5cc ABC glow engine - originally made to run in the Schumacher RC cars. Part One includes discussion of the engine and what it needs to serve in its new role, making the modifications and new parts. Part Two will show test running of the converted engine ...
First Flight in 70 years - Mosquito NZ2308
มุมมอง 71K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
DeHavilland Mosquito NZ2308 was built in Australia and served with RNZAF 75 Squadron after the Second World War. After 70 years of idle decay it has been restored by Mosquito Aircraft Restoration in Drury and AvSpecs in Ardmore, New Zealand. Here's some footage of the first taxi test and first flight test on March 18th, 2024. Apologies for the sound quality - it was very windy and I was too far...

How to make Team Race Wheels
มุมมอง 8298 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wheels for control line Team Race models can be hard to come by, especially in the size required for Class B models. Here's how I make them from 30mm cast urethane round bar sourced from Aliexpress. It slices beautifully, shapes easily by sanding and yet lasts for years and years in use. Most classes require a minimum 25mm diameter wheel, so it's wise to make them 27-28mm to allow for wear. Cla...
Shortest Day 2022 - Slow Combat
มุมมอง 758 หลายเดือนก่อน
A quick flashback to June 2022 and the 23rd Shortest Day Slow Combat contest at Meremere Raceway. This is a bout between Alistair Boys and Kevin Barnes. Alistair won the bout 3-1 and went on to finish second overall. They're both using F2D combat models fitted with ASP 15 engines flying at a speed limit of around 110km/h.
Engine Run - Picco 12 Turbo
มุมมอง 3929 หลายเดือนก่อน
I found this long lost video while digging around in the backups. It's one of the earliest RC car engine conversions I did - a Picco 12 Turbo. I don't know the full and correct model name, but it is an ABC 3-port engine with a Turbo plug head and a turbo-cut crankshaft. It was nearly wrecked by its original owner - scored piston, covered in dirt - but miraculously it still runs quite well. I ne...
Napier to Auckland by Air NZ

A few short clips and pictures from the 2019 Shortest Day Slow Combat contest in Mercer, New Zealand. Unfortunately I was too busy flying and pitting to get more footage. Such is life... I'll put up other contests as I get around to it.
Engine Run - MVVS G7 - Part 2
มุมมอง 1.8K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
I testing this 1970s Czech-made MVVS G7 2.5cc glow engine a few years ago and found that it was in need of some refinement. Here it is after the first few improvements - a smaller venturi to allow it to run on a suction fuel feed system, and the head clearance set to a more effective level. Fuel is 10% nitromethane, 20% castor oil and 70% methanol. O'Donnell Sport medium glow plug. The model at...
Engine Run - HPI 3.5 CL Conversion
มุมมอง 1989 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here's another RC car bargain that I have converted for control line aircraft use. The original intent was to use it in Open Goodyear Team Racing, but one of my Go21-MG66 has taken that job. This worn out piston/liner set isn't great at hand starting and a bit gutless at low revs, but it looks like it starts to wake up at 27,000 rpm, so there might be some merit in setting it up with a mini-pip...

I've had this thoroughly worn out Enya 15 for many years and in 2013 came its chance at a second life - albeit, potentially a very short one. Engine Run - Irvine 15R Turbo
มุมมอง 1.2K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
This Irvine 15R Turbo started off as an RC car engine, which I got for $33USD on eBay. It was in great condition, perhaps only run once or twice, if that. A few hours later, it's set up for Goodyear racing with a venturi, Rossi Pylon NVA, crankcase pressure tap and a more civilized head size. It probably still needs some loosening up and a bit of attention to head clearance, but it shows some p...

Lockdown Engine Run - Taipan 2.5 Goldhead
Back in the day we called this the "Taipan 15". While engine displacements were in cc, names were not - yet. They still employed the old ci nomenclature. A great 1/4 Midget and pylon engine - I had several on tuned pipes (for which they were designed, including the "pipish" standard muffler) and they absolutely screamed.
مرحب بك يا صديقي واشكرك على هذا الفيديو الرائع والعمل الجميل اتمنى لك التوفيق والنجاح أنا صديقه جديده في انتظارك احلى لايك
This Mossie is actually a brand new fuselage and tail feathers. It Belongs to Rod Lewis, Lewis Air Legends. That's Steve Hinton at the controls, he flew it 15 hrs in NZ, then it was shipped to Chino California. Kermit Weeks just put out a video of it and explains it all. This is technically a new build with original data plates and hardware
The wood is replaced everything else is restored original approx 2/3 of the weight is original. Mosquitos do not have a data plate!
At this point in time I won't rush down to the super for 🍻 & 🍿🍿...
I have a uncle who supplies bags of these steel balls 😉
The first question then is, how many one-way valves do you want? lol
Great work! That was fast, thank you wery much. 😊 Engine seems to run flawlessly. The hot restarts seem very promising. Where did you get the bhp estimates on the apc pylon props? Just for comparison with the same props my DJS did 18800 with an APC 7x4, 21200 on 6.5x5 and 23000 on 7x3.
Thanks again. I'm very pleased with the starting. The previous one was difficult to start until it had a lot of running. APC publish calculated propeller data on their website and it's possible to extract power absorption figures to estimate an engine's power output. There are some discrepancies, but it's useful anyway. Aeromodeller magazine published similar data in the '90s that was determined by experiment, but it had limited range. APC's calculated data goes beyond physical limitations. I'll send you some info and do a video about it at some point.
👍👍👍
Thanks for the video! Congratulations from Brasil!!
Very nice! Interesting subject and good explanations on the Goodyear racing 👌🏼 Looking forward to the part II. When is it out? 😬
Thanks. Part 2 is probably next week.
th-cam.com/video/nN8EJNYEHuc/w-d-xo.html
Very nice. thank you.
Great video, I like all the variables you used with different oil/nitro. I like these type videos better than just flying around where you don't see or know anything!
Thanks. I love trying to get the most out of engines. One day I'll see if this one has more to give.
Ohhh WOW 👊😎
Is this the one coming back to England?
No, it's in the USA now.
Forget the P 38 Lightening and the lumbering B 25 and the P61 Black Widow , none of them were a patch on the Mossie
If Yuvenko quits building, there won't be much combat. That was over half the models at the meet last weekend.
We're lucky there's any contest CL left at all considering how much gear comes out of Ukraine!
A wonderful restoration. Bloody Good Show!
Nice
Bravo. Perfect. Go ahead
GREAT video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this. There is not enough combat how to videos on TH-cam
Thanks. Sharing the knowledge and secrets is the key to keeping control line alive.
Made of plywood. Lol how brave were the people that fly in this machine
The most powerful, fast bomber fighter ever built. During the war years. Confirm this please
What an absolutely beautiful aircraft. So happy to see her flying again. I wish there were more of them still alive.
When I was still a schoolboy a friend told me his father a factory manager had been a Mosquito pilot in ww2. Years later I asked him why he gave up flying. He said that after flying the mosquito every plane was a disappointment.
Bloody marvellous never thought I'd ever see one fly again, best plane that was built in WW 2, you must have a bottomless pit of cash and were did you get parts from. Love it thank you from the world.
Saw it at Wanaka! Lovely...
Well done you clever Kiwi's , hope to see it flying over where I am
The world needs an updated Mosquito with turboprops
The first multi role combat aircraft and a beauty well done to all who helped build her
Having done my Apprenticeship at Hawker de Havillad (1978), Bankstown airport NSW where the aircraft was built. Its great to see it fly again.
Remember seeing flight of four at Biggin Hill air display in early 60:s just after 633 Squadron filmed. It was their last flight as all were being pensioned off due to airworthy issues. I wonder if any survived? 🇬🇧
A thing of grace and beauty - the restorers did a great job!
Beautiful bird! And nice to see her fly again! Greetings from 🇨🇦
So thrilled another one is flying again. Their history should never be forgotton.
Very many thanks for your answers
67 year young airplane nut here in Nevada,as a kid/teen built all the WW2 models(a lot of Airfix72) of all the combatants. The more I rediscovered the Mossie and it’s incredible story of design and jaw dropping 1st flight way back when, well let’s just say I have my share of DH98 t-shirts now! Great job on getting the real thing where it belongs, in the air!!
What part of the world is it?
New Zealand. Rebuilt at Ardmore airport. Currently preparing for an airshow in Wanaka.
Brilliant aircraft, great to see such an icon flying again!
Is this one staying in NZ last one built here was for an American owner this one was restored please let it stay here
As far as I know this one is going to Texas and the next to England. They need a backer with deep pockets to fund restoration and ongoing maintenance and storage costs.
Could do with one of these in Scotland. We get midges in clouds, but I've yet to see a Mozzie in flight...
If this was 18th March 2024 why are there so many leaves on the trees?
Because in this part of the world most trees don't drop their leaves and most of those that do won't start dropping them for another month or two.
Late summer, early autumn,
My late father flew with the RAF from 1943 to 1973 through the transition to jets and finished by instructing on Gnats and Hunters. He maintained that his favourite aircraft of the many types he flew were the Mosquito and Hornet. Great to see another one in the air.
I have no idea what is going on here. I’ve never seen anything like it. But I think it looks absolutely amazing.
Wow! Incredible work.
Were there no flaps on take off? That would be written up by the flight leader
Loved everything about the wooden wonder growing up, Only wish was the audio recording was better to appreciate that twin engine roar, thanks for the video
Awesome!
Take-off roll starts @7:27 Lovely to see yet another beautiful Mossie airworthy. 🙂
Beauty!
What a machine….👍👍👍👍👍😊
