Flying Scot 2024 North American Championship - Race 6 (Strategy vs Tactics)

Too concerned with boat on boat "tactics" and missed the "strategic" wind shift that made the other gate mark favored. Regatta run by Cedar Point Yacht Club in Westport, CT. I was too nervous before every start to remember to start the camera but remembered after the 1st leg of this one.
2024 Lake Townsend Mayors Cup - starts & parts from Flying Scot racing

Lake Towsend Yacht club hosts the Mayors cup the first weekend in June each year. It's typically lighter breeze and flat water which makes for comfortable racing. Super shifty and puffy both days. Pin favored start line, but lighter breeze at that end. Had to favor the left/port tack layline as puffs were big leftys. Here's the list of clips: 0:00 Race 1 - Start 0:58 Race 1 - Avoid the clump of...

Gotta love when the local rock star has a cool nickname like "Fast Eddy". The right and left side seemed to work out on the 1st leg of this race and we got stuck in the middle tacking too much.

Super lucky to find a big hole on the starting line in the 42 boat Championship fleet. Made some bad decisions on the downwind leg that led to a disasterous leeward mark rounding, but it forced us left on the 2nd beat. And that was truely a blessing from above!

Blowing 15 to 20 out of the NNW for Race 1 of this years edition of the Davis Island Flying Scot regatta. Only 300 lbs of crew weight so we reefed the main by lower the halyard, applying the cunningham until the cunningham gromet was in the middle of the boom; then re-snug the main halyald. Crazy that it works so well. Speedometer is very educational.

Great race and communication. The footage from different angles (tracking the fleet around you) is really helpful also. Can I ask what camera you're using for this? It's so much more immersive than the single view we use
I use the GoPro max 360, but @SailingWithMyBrother uses an insta 360 that might be better.
Comment below by Kevin. Wait, what? that was her first regatta? She is an athlete. Joel better watch out. Who is coming with you to Detroit? Who's coming to The Glow? Your daughter does fantastic...a little work on rolling those tacks and she's a champion crew! Nice going.
Yep, you’ll get to meet her in Detroit. We’re going 3 up.
It is bad luck to wear clothing from the regatta during the regatta
NEVER! :\
Tech tshirt was from the nationals a couple months earlier.
Very impressive crew work! I’m amazed that this is her first regatta. I think Joel has something to worry about! Seriously, nice work both on this race and the overall regatta. Interesting reach finish, too.
If you get nervous before a race do what my crew tells me to do: have a beer. 😂
Nice finish. But where was your public display of affection with Joel?
Puppy dog? HAHA - well master Jeff and his bride Amy are showing you the way. :)
The DREAM TEAM !!!!
Starts and parts, love the title. See you at NACs!! 🎉
Love to see your videos with clear technique, and the most educational part is clearing the spinnaker line wrapped around centerboard or just under the boat. You both worked dynamically to solve the problem. Start lines and Mark roundings are also valuable educational tools.
Glad to help!
I am leery about removing the bolt at the rudder head to add the ring like you have. I may just use a small shackle to attach it.
Nice videos. Helpful. See you at CPYC.
That was awesome. Tight finish!
What a blast! RC boat eh? What kind was it? One thing I like about this is that an iPhone has a much better battery than a drone. Could be very useful...if you have a lot of storage. :)
Hello from FS Fleet 37 Hoover sailing club Westerville Ohio. As a newbie FS owner and anxious to race I'm getting a lot out of watching you race. Thanks for the video
That is the exact reason I put these out there. So that people can learn. Heck I learn quite a bit myself from these. Thanks for the comment, it makes it worth the effort.
Well done!
Nice regatta Dave and Joel!
In the DRINK!!!
You didn’t actually reef the main you just lowered it down. If you had a reef point and could reef the main upwind performance may improve
Yes, absolutely agree. However, we don't have reef points so this is the best we can do.
Nice win!
Whoa! What is going on at the Great 48? Listen to that collision! 😰
What happened! 6040 approaching mark on port. Didn’t yield to 5871 on starboard. But 5871 T-boned 6040?!?!?! What’s up with that? Both boats were in the wrong. Then 2848 hit the mark (trying to squeeze a tack in to round inside some starboard trackers), but at least she returned to rebound (diind’t have to-could’ve just done a 360 and gone on). Unusual.
Nice. Do you like the ring that connects the mainsheet block to the rudder? Does it foul much (like mine)? How does the camera appear to rotate to another view angle? Your tacking seems especially fluid with little loss of speed. Nice work. Which club do you sail at?
Yes, I love the ring on the mainsheet block. It's simple and works fairly well. On a gybe, you have to remember to give the mainsheet a little tug so that the block flips from side-to-side. The camera is a GOPRO 360. When I convert the 360 video to a regular video I get to pick the angle. I race mostly out of Lake Norman Yacht club, but also out of Lake Eustis Sailing Club
Very nice job Dave and Joel! I really appreciate your filming, editing, and sharing your races. It looked like you were in maybe 4th or 5th at the weather and leeward marks. And looks like you were genius going left, but the leeward mark rounding forced the tack to starboard that got you started heading that way. Notice that 5457 who was inside of you at the leeward mark ended up way back. Also, it seems David Ames, who finished 4th, was 5 boats behind you at the leeward mark, so he had an equally good last leg as well.
Yes Paul. Good summary. My poor leeward mark rounding forced the tack to port back through the spinnakers which is usually death. However, it was definitely favored to go left on that last upwind leg. Tyler was pretty far back and rounded the opposite gate, went left and finished 3rd.
What tiller mounted camera system do you use? I saw it when I was at the regatta and just never got a chance to ask you about it despite the entire day of "postponement!"
The mount is a $7 item off of amazon. Just serach for: Walway Adjustable 360 Degree Rotation Wrist Strap Mount Strip Belt for Hero 6/5/ 5 Session/ 4 Session/ 4/3+/ 3/2/ 1, Xiaoyi and Other Action Cameras
We’ll try not to splash you so much!😂
Oh no! I just watched your Race2 video and realized it was Rhino splashing us. Thanks for posting this. Since you camera was pointed at us a couple times, I learned some good stuff.
Love watching your videos Dave!
Thank you, David, for publishing. I picked up a few things, but generally we're doing most of what you're doing; main thing is you keep your boat flatter than we keep ours, and you are much better at maintaining a heel than I am. My tacks are not as fluid as yours either, but I picked up a trick that might help me. full finger gloves help. I have some on order. See you in Eustis.
Yep, I had to convert to full finger gloves a couple years ago. The short ones ride up and become useless.
Are speedometers now class legal?
No. The speedo is integrated into the video. David cannot see it while racing, but it shows up on the video as part of the processing.
Jib lead needs to be aft on track, use more vang…as much as you dare to vang sheet and it keeps jib luff tighter as halyard stretches. And more cunningham down
Not sure why you gybed away on the last run, only to gybe back a minute later.
Yeah, it was a bad decision. He was just starting to run over my air and I thought I should gybe before he got me slow.
You were faster on the first downwind in roughly the same relative position
Very nice montage.
Loving the full race raw videos. Looking forward to seeing more!
Dude, 4 bullets, congratulations!
Dave, that is a terrific video and your crew is as talkative as, well, me! :) Hope to see you at Davis Islands.
Im sorry im kinda new to sailing what boat is this?
This is a Flying Scot. ⛵
Dave and Joel, thanks for posting two of the four 2023 Scot-a-Hoochee races. It really helps pump me up!
Looks like the boom could go a few degrees higher till it is on centre line. Also looks like a bit more halyard on the main would bring draft forward as it should be at 50% or a bit less.
Thanks for posting this, I really learned a lot from it.
That was close.
That's a work out.
Hi David, I think you need more mast rake in light winds to move the CE aft. Loosen either forestay tension and/or jib halyard. You seem to be fighting a lee helm, probably due to a very tight jib halyard. Good luck for the 2023 NAC at LNYC
Dont try to point a Scot, foot first, get speed, then point up a little. Over steering in the tacks, too much rudder. Also needs to roll tack more. Scots respond to roll tack well, carrying more momentum thru the tack. Steer with crew weight, lean in/lean out. Make sure jib leech isn’t hooked in. Those MAD sails look good, fast. Say Hi to Ryan.
I just heardsay they have the same name. it's a flying Scott class.Sandy Douglas designer did three boats the Highlander the thistle and the flying Scot. All very good boats.
You can sure see that current running against the flying Scots. There barely making way.
Awesome stuff. Great time.
Glad you got these great shots. The sailors had a great time. And they learned a lot. This winter's seminar series will have some eager attendees. We can use these videos and more to show a few things.
