Selmers do like to crack. I think it is just that people don't oil them EVER.
Is it worth it to overhaul a Martin Handcraft Alto? Or just better off buying a new horn?
@@JesusMartinez-jj4nz depends on what’s important to you. They can play very well. Will they play as effortlessly as a new Yamaha? No…
Hola cómo estás? Muy buen video! Me gustaría preguntarte cómo se llama el aceite que usaste para hidratar la madera!
I see that you have "The Martin" Committee on your videos list. I am looking at buying one of these horn: 400 a year before the Selmer buyout (Cheaper), and "The Martin" Committee. I wondered which one is the better tenor since you have experience with both?
For my money, the Martin would be a slightly better horn. An early Martin vs a later Beuscher… Martin all day
@@cpmusicservices8185 Thanks! I guess I will spend more for a 50's Martin in this case. Say, if it was a 156 Beuscher Aristocrat, would it be better or as good as a Martin or a 400?
@@wckoek I’d still go with the Martin. Such an underrated instrument

I am curious, why did you not grove out the inside bell crack and proceed to fill and blend the fill to make the crack disappear? It seems to me that would have the repair perfect, but good work on the outside repair..
It pretty much disappeared from about 5 ft away…
Greetings from Ukraine! I think your theory is right )
I just got one for my birthday (kind of on accident, the guy at the store told my grandma that is was a bass clarinet) but I still really like it, but I can't find a finger chart or music anywhere! I really wanna learn how to play this thing 😭😭
the way to drill a round surface like that is to chuck the part in a vice under a milling machine and use an end mill to gently cut a flat in the round service. that will give you the purchase you need to both punch and drill properly.
I use a dremel drill press, and hold the thing in place with clay-tack.
Nice video, sage advice! I hope that people will listen!
I worked at Boosey and Hawkes at the Edgware factory for 20 years as a musical instrument factory.
Nice job, I did a Selmer Centered Tone bell last week. The only real difference is I used carbon fiber rod. When I shrink a ring I always use of a piece of hardwood between the tool and the rawhide mallet, it keeps even pressure so you don't mis hit and warp the ring. As a side note 95% percent of the bell cracks I fix are from Selmers.
Nicely done. Only thing I would add is string buff to polish.
That would be in the next installment of how to repair the repair!

Was wondering if You have any more videos on a C melody?
Wow, all that work amd time, plus materials, and it's not perfect. What would a new bell cost ?
Its about the concept. The same repair could be done to other parts of a clarinet that are not that easy to replace.
A new bell would cost much more than what I charged.
Great work though, and fascinating how well they turn out, thanks...
mine is in the shop now.....waiting for it to be done.....can't wait to get it back!!
Great work, really high artistry and craftsmanship. I watched all the videos on this horn because I've had the same horn for 20 yrs and just now the finish is doing something very strange where it's turning kind of a swirly black (just on a few keys of the upper stack). I'd like to do something myself, but I think this might be out of my league. Was wondering (1) as a guy who understands the unique finish of these, any idea why this us happening and (2) how hard would it be just to strip those keys down to the bare brass (I'd be ok with pretty much anything other than what it's like rt now and thought that a few unlacquered keys might look better)?? I'd love to send you a few photos, couldnt find a contact address. *Mine is on my channel, under "about". (There are other ref 54's online where this is happening all over the horn in big sections for some reason and the owners are distraught. Can't understand why it started just on the upper keys after 20 yrs..) Thanks again for posting this!!
that sounded great. I have an alto and don't like to play it because of the squeaking i produce...i played it today for Christmas services and had to play everything an octave lower because everytime i would go into the upper register is would squeak....not sure if it's my mouth, reed, the instrument or what....it's been happening a lot. maybe i need stronger reeds...i'm just not sure
Double check if all your keys (especially your register vents) are sealing properly. I've had a similar issue with my Vito, and turns out the upper register vent was leaking
Nope, a pair of Dutchman butterfly splines, one small, one larger.
How did you remove the tarnish so well?
I use a two pronged approach. Haggertys tarnish remover (the pink stuff) and the white polishing cloths from allied. Works great!
@@cpmusicservices8185 Great thanks!
Hi, I am a professional repairman from Bulgaria. I am looking for an iron rod for clarinet and oboe. Diameter - 2.05mm., 2.10mm. and 2.15mm.. I need 2 meters from each diameter. Maybe you know from where I could order. Thanks in advance.
It's another whole :/ not sure if I'm for it
i have a 1956 dynaction with a great sound heavy little bugger and it shows in the sound it produces
wes, i have a problem. my teacher told me to superglue the rings on to my clarinet barrel and that was before i knew they are supposed to come off. they didn’t go all the way on and make me a little more flat than i was before. how do i get them off??
You won’t Be able to. You’ll end up cracking the wood underneath when you try to take the ring off
If a composite barrel...ask teacher for replacement. If wooden..... In a well ventillated space fiill a small metal container with a little acetone...the depth of the ring. Stand the barrel in the acetone for several minutes. (May have to top off acetone as it evaporates quickly) Likely will come off. No? Let barrel dry Use a butane lighter at a 45 degree angle , pointing away from wooden barrel. Heat ring. Should come off.
@@think2023 Yea, I run into s-glued rings about twice a year. You have to super freeze them to get them to release, scrape all the glue off, then put them on right. The only glue I use on rings is super-fine shellac powder. You can heat that and it gets sticky and holds the new ring on, but I only do that if the thing falls off for the customer twice, which means they aren't oiling properly.
@@jstep4146 acetone dissolves CA glue Methyl alcohol dissolves shellac. I have a special press to reform rings too....but like freezing....risk of cracking bell.
Tell me please! What should I do if the socket is cracked? The socket has gone apart( I don't know what to do........
The brand of C/A glue that had the broken tip is quite good. If you go to a hobby shop or other supplier you can get it in 3 or 4 different viscosities. I think you will find it better stuff than the hardware store variety. I have friends that are violin bow makers and they use it for some bow repairs. The very thin variety works well to use with grenadilla powder. I have had the frog of an expensive bow get its corner chipped and repaired this way.
I usually can find those CA glues at my local hardware store… I find the regular ca glues work quite well for this application
Grenadilla. Like a dill pickle . :-). not a Spanish double ll like y sound.
I wonder if you could undersized the ring just too tight to go on, then heat it up slip it on and cool it it quickly.
You are a magician, wonderful work
Like 21:06,, 21:12,, 21:21 ,, 34:40 ,, 36:00 ..
have both and love both, the buffet is the better horn but for jazz the sound of the VI is sometimes better especial for Big Band, you sound great! Thanks for posting
Some people say the SDA is more for classical. Albert Ayler, Art Pepper, Koichi Matsukaze, Jackie McLean, Marion Brown, Jemeel Moondoc etc. play jazz I'd say. I have a 1959 SDA and don't want a Mark VI at all.
Thanks for making this video. Not much on these horns on here, surprisingly! I started saxophone lessons in the early 80's at Royal Music Center in Royal Oak Michigan where Herb Couf could be found behind the sales counter. My jazz teacher in high school played Coufs, and when i heard you play, it instantly took me back to his tone. I own a Bundy Special which was a short run made by Keilwerth. Rolled tone holes!! I did a comparison vid that includes it if you are so inclined. th-cam.com/video/wo4FxL0w7Vs/w-d-xo.html
what did you charge for that repair?
I charged just north of what an overhaul cost. I communicated with the client well, and often. He was very pleased with the result.
That shit is fucked up son. Good luck tho.
it came out very well... patience and fortitude is what it took...
I play a Reference tenor that I bought new several years ago. It has the same finish on it as the one you repaired. It looks like the repair area turned a light green. Out of the box mine had a small green dot on it. Nice work my friend.😃
Hello Chris, so finally happened to this Martin once you completed the overhaul? I didn’t see any follow up video with the end result. Thanks
yea.. I have to get better at that....
I've never had played a alto clarinet, but I'm interested. What are some good brands of alto clarinet for a beginner and how much should I pay for them?
as with everything these days there are a good number of very attractive looking instruments coming from overseas (China). While some may be good quality, I would rather get an older Leblanc or Noblet that has seen a few years and get it gone through by a repair tech that you trust. All in you are probably looking at $1200 for a really nice instrument.
not sure if you're still looking but you can try to find a used selmer paris on ebay for $1200-1500 and repair it for $500 ( that's what mine cost) and then you have an instrument worth 12k that you got for 2k
LeBlanc Paris
For secondhand, Leblanc Paris (the old one with the curvy neck) are a popular choice. For brand new, probably the Buffet prestige, though they are extremely expensive.
There a ringing artifact that I could hear with the Selmer. I have experienced this also on using phones but it was related to the mouthpiece. I prefer the SDA. Also have a tenor SDA and a Selmer SBA. I think both of them sound similar. French core.
Great video!
i joined a comunity band this year so i could play alto clarinet. i have owned my bundy for 30 years and never got to play it, i got a few looks and remarks when i showed up with it lol. i am having a blast playing it ! so much so that i upgraded to a noblet. the parts are better than expected but some scores omit the alto and i have to play bari or alto sax parts. my only gripe is after playing bass with a floor peg-i want one for the alto also but cant find one aval. a good mpc makes all the differance on these. a vandoren transformed my bundy !
you can play any bass clef part and read it as treble and add 2 sharps to the music....i'm going to use mine to play the bassoon parts with our college community band
Did you seriously play Stars fell on Alabama on the selmer? That’s epic
Of course… 😁
Hi! My Evette clarinet made by buffet crampon says D8XXX for the serial number. made in France. do you think this is a good instrument? B flat. wood. sounds nice. plays well, I think... the notes are very accurate, but I am no expert. I bought it at a yard over the weekend. never played before that! haha.
I don’t Know what that number means, but evettes are generally thought of as the intermediate model from buffet. They are generally made in Germany rather than France, but who knows. I’m sure there is a website that can give you a history.
@@cpmusicservices8185 serial number D8888. Made in France. Thanks! I’m not getting a clear story. That’s why I’m asking everyone.
I'm having an issue on my piccolo where one of the springs is bent and every time I push it where it's supposed to go it pops out of place and it's making my e natural key fall down and not stay up My band director took it apart and made it worse and I sat there with a ballpoint pen and fixed it because he wouldn't let me have the screwdriver so it's safe to say that my band director doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to piccolo
Having the right tools does help and Band directors do sometimes know what they are doing, but remember that most of their experience comes from last minute "right before the concert" situations. Have a good repair person that you trust is a valuable asset
@@cpmusicservices8185 he's even told me that he doesn't know how to fix piccolo's he's more of a brass heavy guy that's where he finds his favorite interests the nearest repair shop is 45 minutes away and I think I'm going to go there before championships at the end of the month
Your Super Dynaction is a better saxophone, hands down. It has better intonation, consistency, handles the airstream better. On the other hand, Mk6 fluctuates, inconsistent intonation, should be played with smaller tip opening perhaps?
Won't getting oil on the cork cause it to shrink?
not in my experience.
@@cpmusicservices8185 thanks
Great vid.. What is the name of the song you are playing?
I play a bit of Naima at the beginning, then I play Alice In Wonderland
hi what chemical.you use for that color?
It’s from JAX. I think it’s their antique bronze...
I think it was JAX Copper Bronze if I remember correctly.
Using jax brown-black to tint the brass
It’s clear your throat is tuned to your buffet, but the important fact is that the tone you get from it is totally legit!
thanks! I have been playing the Buffet for quite a while. I'm sure that i would get used to the selmer in time...
Gorgeous horns. My fav is the "Top Hat & Cane". Please redo the video with good audio software. Not sure where the ringing is coming from. Your mic or software. Not doing this horn/mouthpiece justice.
That is the sound from the iPhone mic. Unfortunately there isn’t much I can do about it now.
