New Mexico BDR 2024 EP 1
For Spring Break 2024, we headed out to the New Mexico BDR with our 2021 Defender 110. We had two other rigs with us, a JKUR and a JTR. We saw dry, muddy, and snowy conditions with some challenges along the way for sure, and a lot of amazing scenery.

ARB Awning & Awning Room Review
มุมมอง 7K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
Part of our Short Reviews, in this video we do a short review on the ARB Awning and Awning room. This is the 2500x2500 or 8.2' version. We do a Timelapse of putting it up and I cover our build out inside. It gets 5 stars for sure, with the only issue we've had was a failed LED strip in awning itself that ARB warrantied no questions asked.
2023 Moab Overland Journey - Final Episode
มุมมอง 315ปีที่แล้ว
In the final episode we mostly just chatter on about what we liked and didn't like about the set up, the trip as a whole and some of our fav moments. It's a short one as we only had about 20 miles to pavement and it was a pretty quick pace, but worth the watch to learn what worked for us that might work for y'all as well.

Can you drive away from it
no you can not. This is attached to our trailer so the trailer can stay back but if it was attached to the vehicle you would need to break it down and stow it before driving away.
Nice 4Runner!!!!
Is your power source up the front or near tge tailgate?
We ran power from the Genesis dual battery under the hood to the port on the passenger side where the D ring tie down is from the factory
I know this awning room is meant for the same brand awning, but do you think it would work with a cheaper awning as long as they are the right size?
Nice review. I have the same one but before they did the light strip (which seems unnecessary, I use small nightize rechargable lanterns).
Thanks for your comments :)
Not much room for bags etc. need a roof rack
thanks for checking it out. we tow a trailer so there is room in the Boreas AT for sure. In general the bags fit on the floor behind the front seats and then bedding etc is already in the trailer. if i didn't have the trailer and I had kids it would be tight for sure.
I really like the modifications you’ve made. This is exactly what I’m looking for! Have you considered a winch?
yes we considered doing a winch, however we decided not to on this initial build. being this was our first land rover product we wanted to make sure we like more than the aesthetic of the brand before we really went down the build rabbit hole.
0:38 Why did you use sandbags instead of stakes? 4:17 Have you replaced the lighting and tested it with the room? How strong was the lighting?
The ground was too hard for the metal ground grabbers we had. The area is mostly sandstone and granite so you're trying to stake in to rock bed. We did get a new awning room instead of replacing the light strip. The lighting is strong. The white light is exceptional. The orange light setting seems less bright mostly due to color temp.
@@wanderlustoverland Nice, I got the room a few days ago but I haven't used it yet. As for the awning, it has been with me for a year. and the lighting is really strong, but I was wondering how strong it is inside the room. Will I need other lights or is the Awning lighting sufficient?
@@oldstory-sz4qc We have an aux light on the side of the trailer which is crazy bright, so I don't really use the light on the awning any more, but from what I remember it was plenty for ambient. If you're cooking inside or digging in to bags at night you may want a headlamp.
@@wanderlustoverland Very Nice Thank you you helped me a lot And I appreciate that.
Was there a reason why you didn't take the Boreas down into the Lathrop canyon? I'm asking because that is one of the side trails I want to do with my Boreas when we do the White Rim.
Is this a stock suspension set up or are you running rods or a Llams kit? Also nice colour too
Thanks for sharing this, really helpful as I'm taking mine up there in a few weeks. Only thing I'm worried about are the classic mudflaps I have installed, they have some flex to them but could still be ripped off taking the trim with them. Nice work making it through unscathed.
Love the video, I’m a bit late to the party.. Did you air down the tires prior to the run? If so to what? Thanks!
Cool! I have a built JT on fox 3.0's & 40's, did this trail a bit ago. Looking at getting a defender for the wife & for really long trips. The JT was harder to get into 4 high or low new, but it gets a little better. You should be rolling slow and pull straight down for 4 high, goes in easy. Then 4 low, just be in neutral to shift to it.
Wow. Made it look easy
Awesome video ! hey can you tell me how you mounted the rotopax and mud boards on your spare tire?
Very cool!
Just bought one. Would love to know what tie downs you are using and where you got those bags that hold your tie downs rather than stakes. Thank you.
Thanks for checking out the video. The tie downs are "Quick tie-downs" and the stakes and stake bag are from Ground Grabba
4 door is not for Off-road 😮
It would seem they are, tho. Take a look at the Overland Trips we have taken and you'll see plenty of off-road worthiness in the Defender and our Boreas trailer.
The only thing the defender can’t go past is the dealers hoist , mine has spent 2 months out of 12 there and is still there with turbo problems The worst most unreliable car I’ve ever owned and the lemon fight continues
sorry to hear this. we have not had any serious issues
What engine do (did) you have?
Nice to see the capabilities of these vehicles. I’ve previously had the LR3, now a Puma defender, but seriously looking at one of these 👍great video
Thanks a bunch. We appreciate the support
Cool awning. Is it possible to unzip the floor?
yes. we leave it attached because it's easier to store that way
Your new LED light won’t work either. I had a total of three and found out the plug is wired incorrectly. Your existing one works just try different configuration of the plug from led light to controller.
The original LED strip worked for nearly a year. We installed the replacement and it worked fine our whole trip.
Just started watching your videos. Great content as I’m looking into switching from my JLU. Curious what tires/wheels you’re running and if you had to mod in anyway to avoid rubbing on inner fender wells? Thanks in advance
Thanks for checking us out. Hopefully, you've subscribed to the channel. We have the factory 20" wheels with 265 60 20 BFG KO2 tires. We initially did not choose to lift it as it only rubbed in access height, but then we took it on some trails and found it rubbed a little bit when flexed. I then decided to run a 1" lift rod from Proud Rhino that we purchased from Lucky 8. Over all, we are very happy with the Defender coming from our previous rig, a 2021 Gladiator Rubicon on 37s.
Appreciate your feedback and yes I subscribed. I look forward in watching future content. Was the one inch lift rod a difficult install?
@@patrickdougherty2171 not at all
Is there a way to secure the opening around the trailer side? Looks like it is open and would allow wind/rain to enter. Thanks for sharing.
yes. That side does zip shut for inclement weather and it is possible to do that while inside the trailer.
I meant the material of the awning room
it's treated. the water beads but if you let it sit it will soak through
is the material water proof?
it's treated. the water beads but if you let it sit it will soak through
Thanks@@wanderlustoverland
Nice! How is it in heavy winds?
ARB says it’ll do 100 mile an hour winds. I wouldn’t trust that however we have seen 60+ miles an hour and it’s been fine. It flaps a little bit against the trailer. Other than that not a big deal.
Very nice 👍 Is the exterior colour Eiger Grey and is it wrapped ? what is your thoughts about the integrated compressor from LR compared to ARB ? thanks heaps ...
Yes, it is Ira Gray with the factory, Matt PPF
A good driver can a take a mediocre vehicle and make it work. A bad driver can take a good vehicle and make it fail.
what maxtrax mount is that on the spare tire ?
it's sort of a home made job bolted to the Rock Slide Spare Tire mount
Is the floor area big enough for a full size cot?
Yours can conquer this without rear lock?! 😂
Correct. We do not have the rear locker option
Nice! ARe you running the stock tire size? We're going to try some trails in Moab on our way back from Central America. I'm running 275/60r20s in a 10 ply, which are just over 33".
We had 265's at the time of this video = 32.6" tire BFG KO2 Load Range C. Hope this is helpful
How do you fit the 33’s did you do a lift rod? If so how big? I’m considering a 1” lift hoping it doesn’t affect the ride too much.
@@humblesophos No lift. It only rubs in access mode.
Is it safe to sleep in there?
100% I know of a few folks that only have this awning and awning room and they put cots in there and use it like a tent.
Is there a reason your propane tank is outside the shelter? Because I was planning on keeping mine inside to keep it out of the weather but it hasn't occurred to me there could be a good reason to not do that. Does the tank need to be kept dry? Because that was my concern. I thought any fumes would dissipate but now I'm thinking about the video I saw about a tank blowing up in somebody's yard. It was a doorbell camera recording and it left an impression 😳
the only real reason is because we wanted the propane tank as far away from the open flame as possible.
Still not adding extra protection i see… 😂
We did add rock sliders from Proud Rhino. This video was actually the inspiration for adding them.
Truck? That thing isn’t body on frame lol
yeah, I have a bad habit of calling all my rigs, "trucks"
@@wanderlustoverland I’m just giving you a hard time
Awesome journey. Thanxz for sharing wonderful sceneries and I quite appreciate the Defender's in cabin quietness it is well noticeable how quite the cabin remains despite its coping with undulated roads and towing a trailer. Glad that I'am one of your early subscribers and wish you guys keep uploading amazing contents like these. Love and best wishes for all for the New Year 2024 from here in Sri Lanka. CHEERS
Thanks so much. We appreciate the support. We have a couple of product reviews going up, one today and another later this month. We are also having Rock Sliders and a 1" lift installed later this week or early next week. After that we will go back to our local off-road park (Northwest OHV Park in Bridgeport) for some more technical trail videos to showcase the capability of the Defender. Then next month we will be taking a trip to MERUS Adventure Park for 2 days of off-road excursions and camping, which should be another great video. Again, really appreciate the support - From Texas, CHEERS!
Time to get Melody her own Rig and Channel haha btw nice work helping people while out on the Trails…
Great rig. How did you mount the Baja design S2 light bar behind the grille?
Thanks for your comment. We mounted the light bar to a pretty solid thick plastic cross member that supported the front of the automatic air flow flaps in the lower section of the grill. The rear of the light bar clears the flaps and does not interfere with air flow. Search for PowerfulUK New Defender Front Bumper removal for the video we used to disassemble the front end to gain access to the light bar mounting area.
Is that eiger grey or silicon silver paint
Eiger with the Satin PPF Wrap
I love my P400. Feels like the perfect engine for all this.
100% we also wanted to be able to tow our boat, so the P400 was the only option
Nearly Snicked the Rear Tyre on the Rock !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yep. I'm really glad I got rid of the stock tires and upgraded to something more hefty for that very reason
You did the driving-fun ... Defender and your wife did the work 😂
🤣
great video... what camera was this shot on?
iPhone 13 Pro. I'll be doing a video on how we shoot what we shoot in the near future. Be sure to subscribe.
Dude... Let me know when your next trip is..... will bring my rivian and come with you...
When are you going to start the mods?
At this point I really only see a need for a short lift . It is primarily an Overlander so it works great as is.
Enjoy it and I hope to wheel with you in my Defender. Be out there after February of next year.
Looking forward to it
Very cool, man! 👏 Which engine/horsepower did you go for? 🤔
Thanks for your comment. It has the P400
Nice scenery...too much yapping
😂
