7:09 really defensive for a 55yr old unless it’s a huge pot? I find gold too unpredictable and won’t have it and I would still prefer short term single gilts as my panic button if things crash for 3 years.
So, crap state pension, and then they make it harder to save for your own? Higher mortgage rates, and at the end, inheritance tax is also higher whilst the banks make huge profits. Energy companies make huge profits too whilst pensioners lose the WFA? VAT remains at 20% on today's inflated prices? 🤣
At least I know that the money stolen from me is being used to house and support uncontrolled illegal immigration. They have earned their freebies...so they think.
In your typically understated way you have once again played a blinder.
You can blame that on hunt, he did not raise the personal tax all, so gave us triple lock with one hand and took in stealth tax with the other, we have to pay 168.00 per month + the fuel all , that makes 2100.00this year it will go up again April next year, so stop blaming Labour.
Do lots of research and become your own Financial Advisor. You are more motivated to get it right than any FA you could employ.
@@SJ-pb6jx awesome advice that will save you thousands of pounds
Yep do your own research. Plenty of advisors on u-tube.
Lets see what Trick or Treat brings the top and bottom is the country cant afford its ageing population and they want all to stay in work longer and longer This budget could push the state retirement age to 70 and there may be changes to ISA and SIPP in this budget work a long time live a short retirement will become the norm and take away the perks to allow you to finish work early
I don't have a clue about investing..work on a minimal wage, but saved a small @ healthy amount,I've employed a FA AT 0.95% WITH A £2300 Set up fee...hoping they will build me wealth, then I'll just put it in a high interest account and spend it until I die.now age 60..don't want to work past 63...no idea if I'm doing the right thing at all!
You're not doing wrong in that you're planning for it. Could you do it for cheaper yourself - absolutely yes. But that does require you to spend a bit of time educating yourself on the basics of investments to then avoid that ongoing fee as a drain on your pot. I'm 45 and have only just started building this understanding so i can avoid handing a slice of my cash to a financial advisor.
@dafruk1 Thanks..just not confident with number..if fact Zero!..I tried to measure for blinds once...it was an hilarious result

So far this morning watching your channel I've had financial advice which has changed my mind and now I'm thinking more positively about retiring early...
@@hamsterecology if you redefine retirement as doing some work but on your own terms then you can probably give up the 9 to 5 grind earlier than you think
I'm not leaving an inheritance so I'm thinking I should take Sipp first and then ISA?
@@hamsterecology then you would be paying income tax earlier than you should and that money could be invested and growing your wealth
Thanks for this, but its hardly set and forget is it? The allocations would constantly need to be reviewed. Any portfolio would need be very personal based on an individuals age, other sources of income and risk appetite to name but a few considerations. Plus you will likely have a considerable estate on death.
Great video, I’m 52 and will need advice at 55. I’m not a huge Smiths fan but I think the point of song is about jealousy, I’m not a huge Keir fan but I’m sure he’s not jealous of me, his pension must be bigger than mine, even if I have a million pound pension, no law was passed for me. I don’t resent him have special pension arrangements, he has done much more for society than me.
With an ever changing tax landscape coaching just before you hit the retire button is a good idea
Great video Ian. What is recommended frequency for ufpls withdrawals? Could you take the full ~16k yearly say at start of each tax year and be done with it or more frequent withdrawals are better? Or does it make any difference. I guess you have to complete a p55 form in year one if you take one withdrawal for example. I like the idea of just taking the annual withdrawal rather than repeatedly filling in sipp forms.
@@Gtbg641 hopefully your pension provider could give guidance. If you do it once a year in late March it would be ok. Otherwise once a month would avoid the p55 hassle
@@IanShadrackInvesting This is what I am doing. Make sure the withdrawal is activated after 6 March so it hits the Month 12 payroll period (if done 1-5 March it might go into payroll period Month 11). Note that for the first year of withdrawal the pension provider will apply emergency tax as HMRC does not yet know of this income stream but for year 2 onwards it works fine once HMRC gives them a code - or at least it has done for the 3 years I have been doing this!
Let's start with the Westminster set pensions

Do you ever do lives Ian? 👍🏻

So pensioners misplaced 22 billion ? Pick up your tax free sum (from age 55) if you wish. Pick up state pension (roughly equivalent to the tax free allowance), next drawdown a bit from your pension pot as a top up.. pay 20% to inland revenue unless you go over basic rate threshold in which case 40% tax payable. Continue to pay your ever increasing utility costs and other taxes on just about everything else. 😮 government of the people, for the people (or someone)!
What is the average dividend growth of this fund? No one seem to consider this aspect of these fund but growing dividend s add up.
All politicians are a curse on all people the world over .

Brilliantly done Ian.
I retired at 57 just about 2.5yrs ago and it was the best decision I ever made. Having a good level of Health and fitness is the primary item to keep when you retire after being financially secure. I cannot imagine having to work until 67! Good luck everyone and fingers crossed you all get there early!!😎
Thanks for sharing awesome tips! I'm 41 financially free and currently growing a solid retirement plan. It takes a positive attitude and consistency to learn new things and unlearn the old habits. It is important to get a mentor or coach to lead you all the way. It's great to start young too!
Just get a job in the public sector in the UK
I retired at age 53, so I am in my early 60s. Many of them resisted me because they couldn't understand the idea of not working if it wasn't necessary. I considered the phases of my life. I worked very hard to achieve what I have now, but in my last years, I owe it to myself to "stop and smell the roses." In my instance, I departed the nation after retiring and currently reside in Latin America. It made it possible for me to appreciate my new surroundings while escaping all the bad things that were going on in America. Nobody that I know of regrets retiring has yet to come to me.
Great ideas Ian as always. High quality.
Moving home at any age is hard enough , 80 isn’t realistic. Doing your own bond ladder / drawdown is better and cheaper than annuity.
Thanks Ian, very informative, as always. Where would you see an etf like TDGB fitting into this scheme? It pays 4+% dividend but also manages at least 5% growth each year - doesn’t that cover all bases?
@@michaelspilling yes the only drawback is that dividend might reduce in a downturn
Hi, I'm 40 working on my retirement fund too. What do you think is the best target for retirement?
@@CristhianPalomo-r6j a big one
If dividend paying companies generally under perform (total returns) compared to growth companies wouldn't it make more sense to simply purchase a global ETF? Here you'll still get some dividends however with the low cost and average returns your portfolio will generally be more profitable than inflation erosion will dividends. With 20 percent perhaps in bonds or MMA in case of market turbulence. A global ETF is also less volatile than say the S&P..
It does not make sense for some people who have retired to purchase a global ETF because when equity markets have prolonged drawdowns their portfolio will suffer at a time when they are making withdrawals. A solid income portfolio could overcome this issue if dividends were maintained (as might be the case for "dividend hero" investment trusts). An investment trust like JP Morgan Global Growth and Income beats a global ETF but don't tell the Vanguard muppets!
Terry smith is opinionated on income / dividend investing , says you just need to sell stocks focused on total return. Unless taxation is important, generally agree with him and don’t see why I need income. ( lean on bonds when markets are down)
I would agree. I do have some income / dividend satellite funds in my SIPP portfolio (VHYL and TDGB) but more for added diversification, lower P/E ratios and lower volatility compared to accumulation / growth funds, which are still my core.
He's completely wrong. Drawing down in a protracted bear market will wipe you out.
@@annacomnena217 I don’t think anyone is suggesting that, that’s the bond side of portfolio. He was stating total returns is target overall for stocks, not picking lower growth funds. Go watch his recent videos.

Yeah, I'd say at 56 you'd want more than £500k (420+50+50-20) even if you are thrifty. But I'd also say it's a great chance to improve the work-life balance with a part time job that can cover the essential bills - which if he can get them under £20k a year, should be easily doable if they have skills that are transferrable into consultancy work (part of the year or two/three days a week). A 3 day week may be transformative enough on its own right now versus the current undesirable job.
I feel same, too far off from state pension on those numbers. Needs part time work for 4-6 years to lower risk.
Thanks for the vid. I am retiring on the 6 Nov 24 with a lump sum. Could it be a possibility that the lowering of the max free amount to 100k could take immediate effect but be deferred until April 25? Or do you think I may dodge the bullet? Thanks again.
LABOUR ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A BUNCH OF WANKERS
Great video - many thanks
They will bankrupt it paying for useless, non working immigrants who will no doubt expect a full pension for their channel crossing!!
