How to Restore an Old Fiberglass Boat - Episode 13 - The Final Fairing of the Hull
I do enjoy your videos, however, one suggestion that might add viewers, show some closeup video while describing what you are doing. In this particular videos case, you could show how you were using the pic to clean out the screw holes. There were other points as well where closeups would have helped a bit. I do believe this would add to your viewership. I do wish you could put out videos a little more frequently. I do enjoy your channel! Sincerely, Dan
Dan, thank you for the comment and suggestion. I agree that more closeups would help my viewers to better see what is going on. The two week schedule for posting the videos works well for my busy life as a retiree. Take care.
I enjoy your efforts! Thanks for sharing. I wish we still had our Wolverine from my Dad's collection.
There are plenty out there for sale at affordable prices. Many in Michigan.
TotalBoat fairing epoxy ??
Yep. It is called TotalFair fairing compound.
This is gonna be a really cool one!!!
I agree!
Good plan with the 5200 , great looking runabout !!!😍
Thanks! 👍
I think I would have went with a white steering wheel
I’d give that mystery boat a Celtic girls name like “Ayla” !!
We will have to wait see what the owner comes up with.
I'm excited to see you dig into another rebuild! Love your folksy narration.
Thank you kindly! I am looking forward to the project as well.
How much PTO HP does your tractor have?
540 at the rear. 30 h.p. For the tractor engine.
@@reynoldsrunabouts Thank you. I was trying to figure out if my tractor could run it.
That’s a lot of screwdriver use.
I don’t trust the driver. Got to go slow and steady to feel the threads digging into wood.
Beautiful job! Glad to be part of the journey (in TH-cam land)
Thank you for joining me and the compliment on the work.
I’d really love to see the boat in the water running!
Me, too. I hope to post some vidoe or images when the owner has a chance to use it.
Nice work
Thanks! I enjoyed the process.
Do I need to be worried if the top sides of a older mako built with woven roving songs hollow?
If sounds different in other areas then yes. You might have voids that were left there by the factory, rotten wood that forms the inner core between two surfaces of fiberglass, or rotten fiberglass. I have used a small drill bit in areas to see if I can detect wet wood, moisture, or simple a void. That would be my suggest to you.
@@reynoldsrunabouts Thanks my brother
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Wow, she’s looking beautiful. Is there nothing you can’t do? Where does one send the aluminum pieces to get polished?
The vendor for polishing is Courtesy Metal Polishing, 735 N. Addison Road, Villa Park, IL 60181, 630-832-1862, courtesymetal@comcast.net
Very nice! You didn’t mention it but did you v out the cracks first, or just straight fill them?
Many of the cracks were tiny and disappeared after removing all of the blue paint. I folded the sandpaper and ran it into the larger cracks to give the fairing compound something to stick to just like repairing a crack in a fiberglass surface.
Another well done episode. I want a better look at that paint booth my next trip up.
Thanks! It was simple to make and works. Just like I like it.
Another fine episode. Can’t wait for the final result!
even though modern society is rush rush , I’ve told folks to “take time to do it right “ !!! … glad we both take the time to do it right !!!
I agree, totally! Enjoy the process.
if you used the “absorbent” Red oak for the fore-deck , would that be possible for a receptive stain ???
It might but the color might be a little different. I found leaving the staining on it and lightly wiping it off works well.
Yes indeed , you can’t rush true craftsmanship !!! … wonderful !!!
Thanks!
Good information on the steaming process. Thanks
Glad to help. I wish it had stayed put but in the end it went down flat with screws and epoxy.
Loving the finish Geoff.
Thanks, Chuck!
Great work. Enjoying the build.
Thanks! That makes two of us.
Yep , the Tite-bond T3 is the best waterproof glue that I’ve ever used too !!!
Thank you so much for these videos! I bought a 1958 Wolverine last fall with the plan of starting to restore it this spring. I’ve never done anything like this before so these detailed videos are gold for me. Can’t wait to see the finished project.
I am glad you are enjoying the videos. The boat will be finished soon with videos playing into May 2024. Good luck on your own project!
Enjoying your videos very much. Are plans available for the Wolverine?
Thanks! I enjoy sharing my journey. I am not sure if the plans from the Wagemaker company survived. Robert Shapton purchased the rights or trademark to the company and might know more: Michiganboatandengine.com
Thanks. I'll check it out.
Great stuff and this is the real deal. 👍😁Your channel deserves a lot more subscribers than it has. Thanks for the video
Great tutorial! Where do you get that red bases? You put below the pieces? Thanks in advance
Thanks! My friend David Scholten of Firehouse Boatworks in Holland , MI made them based on a 1950s design.
That's quite a rasp!
I love using it!
That carbide scraper can be sharpened with a coarse and fine diamond hone. I have the same scraper and use it for all sorts of things. It can remove epoxy and paint drips, high areas in wood, gunge along inside corners, it can make lumpy fiberglass smooth whether old polyester fiberglass or new epoxy glass. It can feather the overlap of a new glass layer over the previous layer. Dissimilar materials are made flush. If you sharpen it with a super fine diamond hone so that is razor sharp, you can follow after a hand plane or sanding on cedar, pine, or mahogany and the grain almost shimmers in appearance. Especially after sanding, the muddiness disappears. (I hone the corners round so that they can't dig in)
Thank you for the great advice and ideas!
Wonder if a heat gun would remove both varnish and epoxy using gentle scraping. By the way, we owned a 14 ft Wagemaker Wolverine back in the 60's and early 70's but it was strip planked cedar with canvas over the planking below the spray rail down to the keel,. Plenty of steam bent frames. The deck was rather thin white cedar ribbon stripe vertical grain planks approximately 2" wide. There were no white lines between them.
Paul, I have tested both stripper and heat guns to varnish and they both work great. I have not tried it with epoxy but have heard it also works. I have a future restoration that I can try that technique on because the wood underneath will be removed anyway. It will make for a nice experiment. Take care!
I think this is over restored and that the factory didn't go to such finish lengths. But I understand the desire for perfection. Also while modern varnishes are likely glossier, (and I doubt they did rolling and tipping-or even had foam rollers) just a few coats that you did here is at least commendable versus the typical ten that some restorers are doing.
As a boat builder and maintenance provider, I can tell you the best way to restore an old boat is to grind until the entire boat is dust on the floor, then shovel into trash can. Materials alone will cost more than the boat is worth in the end and you will still have an "old boat" when you go to sell regardless of how little of the original boat is still incorporated. Of course none of that has ever stopped me from doing it.
Is it better to install the transom and stringers with epoxy and then use poly to tap them in.
I use epoxy exclusively for both. But, you could bed the joints with epoxy and then tab with poly.
Epoxy over poly is ok. Not the other way around, from everything I’ve ever seen.
Love your show. Very good production. Your lighting is great, workspace is awesome, mic and sound balance are also very good. I'm enjoying watching the content.
Thanks! I enjoy making them. Take care.
Your lift unit is a great idea. Enjoying your documentation and your approach to problem-solving. I have a 1954 Wagemaker in CT. These boats area a joy to work on.
Thanks! I am thankful David Scholten at Firehouse Boatworks in Holland, MIchigan, was able to adapt a design from the 1950s and design a safe and reliable unit that is a game changer when working on these smaller boats. I only added the 8' 4"x4" posts because of the extreme change to the center of gravity when I turn boats completely on their sides for incredible access.
I’m restoring a 1957 Wolverine. Much respect to your lift/spin/outrigger system
Thanks! I would be lost without them.
How are you getting on with this restoration? You have only got out two videos I can find on this. I am interested in finding out your progress as here in the UK I have a small all fibreglass boat I am starting to restore, This boat is of a similar layout, fibreglass deck and internal mouldings..
Tim, the restoration continues behind the scenes until the Wagemaker project is complete. The Wonder Craft videos will most likely reappear in March. Thanks for watching!
I will look out for them. In the meantime I will subscribe and like, and view all the Wagemaker project so far as a lot of it is relevant. You are very comprehensive in your presentation. Enjoyable to watch, easy too understand.@@reynoldsrunabouts
@@timpringle6505 Thanks for the kind review. I enjoy sharing my experiences with these boats and hope they help others.
I’ve had success using a Brad point drill bit to remove filler from counter sunk Phillips head bronze screws. The point of the bit centers itself nicely in the fastener head without damage.
Yes, that would work well, too. Thanks the tip!
I'm very happy to find your channel. Love your work on these boats. My family had a Wolverine boat that we all used and learned to ski behind in the 50's thru the 60's and I am toying with idea of finding one. I'll keep watching your channel. Let me know if you know of a wolverine for sale. Thanks!
Alan, thank you for your kind comments. I a do know of a few Wolverines for sale here in Michigan. Please contact me at reynoldsrunabouts@gmail.com and we can correspond.
Boy there is so much class in the older boats! Looking awesome!
Thank you, Robert!
Beautiful work, Jeff!
Thanks! I enjoy it.
I was talking to Chris Smith RIP and he said they used the Slicker Brothers in Holland for cabin tops in the early days. They went on to Slickcraft then Tierra Boat Works.
Thank you for your engine stand idea to flip boats. I have 2 engine stands and a couple of Chris Craft Runabouts to put new bottoms on.
Your boats will be considerably heavier than my projects. For your boats I would use a set of gantry cranes, straps, and chain hauls to flip it for your safety. Harbor Freight has a set you can use as well as Northern Tool, etc.
