Helmsman Trawlers 38E Pilothouse | Dingy launch in under 4 minutes | Seawise Davit System Review
Hello!
We love our trawler and we love our tender! To us we get so much satisfaction popping ourselves into the dingy and just cruise around and explore local anchorages.
Making our dingy launch (and retrieval) simple and quick was important to us, plus keeping our flybridge free for dining, sunbathing and more!
In talking with seasoned cruisers everyone has a POV on dingy location, but we subscribe to the saying, "the further the dingy is away from the water the less likely you'll be to use it." Perhaps that is true.. perhaps not, but to Alison and I we think it is.
In this video I show you how we use our SeaWise Davit System to launch and retrieve our Highfield Classic 310 in 7 minutes - yes, launch and retrieve it in under 10 minutes total.
Don't forget - any questions, please reach out to me.
Cheers,
Greg Messerle

      No, certainly not... everyone comes to boat ownership with varying backgrounds of course, but with the bow and stern thruster the close quarter manuevers are made "simple".. the systems (electrical, HVAC, ec) are straight forward and not overly engineered as to be confusing. Interested in knowing more, just reach out 914-649-1666.

    Super torn... single engine vs twin... twin would be ideal for more ocean going trips.. but single would be fine for looping.

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think everyone has wrestled with this decision.. perhaps a select few have gone into their purchasing journey not having to worry about single vs. double. There are so many videos, forums, content out there to help you, plus talk to other owners. In the end: What is your intended mission / journey? I don't have the risk appetite to cross oceans, but I do like coastal cruising and island hopping in the Bahamas.. To me, servicing well a single engine (like Cummins) vs. the obligation of two engines (repairs, checks, etc) + having an "insurance" policy in Boat US or Seatow (just in case) felt good to me. So much more to sort through, but for now - it comes down to personal pref and the missions you take. Good luck! Thanks..

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the question! So there are controls in the pilothouse and above at the flybridge. You simply put the engine in neutral propulsion, and if safe to move, relocate to the other helm location. Once you are ready to get underway (and to gain control at the new helm location) you simply hit the "active" button twice (2x) and you can control and can proceed. Just remember: Neutral, move to next location, active/active and away you go! Greg

    How much does the lower unit weigh? It appears to work incredibly well but do you think it’s overkill?

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm estimating the entire system is coming in around 550 pounds in total for the one rotor system that I have (vs. two rotor). It works very well and no - it's not overkill in my opinion. It's certainly not a necessity as the Helmsman 38E is a safe and sturdy trawler, but the system is a nice additional feature that will increase enjoyability (and confidence) on those days where weather maybe be a little sporty.

  • @lawrenceklaas3966

    How does it work? How much does it cost?

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello and thanks for the view and question. The cost of the systems is comprised of two parts: the equipment and the installation process itself. Depending on the size of the vessel it will require either one rotor unit (like mine). A typical 40' trawler would require one rotor but I've seen two rotor systems on a 46' footer. If it's a new boat build the installation cost may have a lower cost than say refitting an older model that desires the system, but that is not always the case. The best bet in my view would be to call or email me and I'll gather some information and share back a quote. I'd like to give you a number here but it would be a guess not knowing your variables.. my particular situation was "more than $50K, but less than $80K" if that broadly helps..

  • @Timinwa
    @Timinwa 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Do you notice any drag while deployed or in park? Just wondering as it is sizable and on one side only. Does the helm pull to starboard after installation?

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the view and the question. I don't notice any drag while parked.. and the drag I've noticed while deployed is about 0.2 knot so if I'm going 8 knots (trawler speed burning 3 gallons an hour) then need to deploy the system I'll most likely be in the 7.8 knot zone. The system does reside on the starboard side (or presumably on port if another engine room allows for it). As a result I tend to manage my fuel tanks so the extra weight of the system doesn't result in a small-ish list to our trawler. With Helmsman 38E I have two -200 gallon fuel tanks (port and starboard) so I just watch the balance between the two - not really a "thing" to worry about day to day. Hope this helps! Greg

  • @jamesklotz
    @jamesklotz 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thanks for posting. Clearly the system can induce a roll, but it seemed like you were using in very calm waters. I'd be curious to see it in 2-3 ft confused seas. Any hopes of seeing it work in some more adventurous sea states?

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been meaning to make this video for several weeks and honestly the weather up on the Long Island Sound these last few weeks has been calm, flat water making it difficult to capture what we wanted to show. There was one time the system really was in full game day mode and that was during a day in the Chesapeake Bay in July and honestly I could not take the time to take out our iPhone and record with the disorganized sea stake. Follow me on Instagram (@HelmsmanHangout) and I'll be sure to post more "Action" as it surfaces.. Lastly, I'd say more than 50% of the usage case for us is when we see a fast, large moving vessel that is going to dump a massive wake on us. We simply engage the system and 12 seconds later we are ready for the wake.. happens all the time on the East Coast. Thanks for the comment! Greg

      Happy to chat with you in depth just shoot me a text or call 914-649-1666. Here's your answers though: 1. I have a camera in the cockpit facing aft so when I'm pulling in (stern in) I simply pull that view up on my Garmin MFD and I'm good to go! People typically add this option when considering their electronics package. 2. I have a water maker and it's great... I plan to use it big time while in the Bahamas this Winter (hopefully!). 3. My wife and I have this down to a well oiled 2-person operation; however many owners do the 38E single handed and I'm very close to pulling this off myself. I believe I could do it right now, but just haven't found myself in that position yet. But, YES - many folks single hand it with the bow/stern thruster which is standard. Talk soon! Greg Messerle

    • @HelmsmanHangout
      @HelmsmanHangout 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's correct. So far I've been operating in the 4 gallons per hour flow rate.. which typically is in the 1760 rpm zone. It's a flow rate I've arbitrarily set in my mind as a good target. I've operated at 3 gallons an hour and achieved very good results as well.. but hardly ever push it beyond 4 gallons an hour as the added gain in speed isn't worth it in my opinion. Depending on current I've gone nearly 10 knots per hour (max I have achieved so far), but more likely (without current) I'm in the 7-8 knots per hour.

Offshore; One at 1 to 2 miles and the other at 4 to 6 miles. In harbors I take it down to 3/4 to 1 Nm on overlay like you have.

      Hi Bill - thanks for sharing your approach. I was adjusting my range rings yesterday from as little as 1/2 mile to 2 miles, but didn't even think of going out to 4+ miles. I'll have to try that next time! Thanks..

    I might add that a good idea is to set one VHF radio to "Dual Watch" so you can also monitor commercial channel 13. Especially in commercially busy areas like New York harbor.

      You are correct, that is a wise strategy... thanks for the comment, Kent!

    Love it when a plan comes together! What a beautiful weather window. How is that stabilizer working??

      Magnus is doing great today on the ocean. there are no waves to speak of but plenty of 3' swell every 5 sec or so, plus passing vessels throwing wake.. Best I can tell it takes about 0.2 knots of "normal" speed when deployed.

    Congrats on that beautiful boat! The drop down dish storage really sets the tone for the fact it wastes zero space and has a lot of great creative touches.

      You're right.. in fact we have about 50% of the storage capacity unused at the moment.. there really is loads of space to stow gear, provisions, etc. Thanks for the comment..

    You should mention the air draft with the radar arch folded. It would be nice to know the noise level in the salon at different RPMs with and without the genset running.

      Good suggestions and I'll try to incorporate that in an upcoming video... As for aircraft with the arch down - I'm going w/ 15' for my operational procuedures even though I suspect it's more like 14'6" or so. Hope that helps!

      Love the pre-populated responses TH-cam provides for me to consider using in comments. For your post the suggested comment was: One day New builds today are looking like under a year and more likely in the 8 month zone.
