Combat and Enemy Balancing in Ghost of Tsushima
It's no secret Ghost of Tsushima plays great. But... why is that?
With the recent Nixxes port of this Sucker Punch Productions' 2020 samurai epic to PC, I've had the opportunity to finally play through the story of Jin Sakai and I was quite impressed. Dive in with me to take a closer look at the reasons why the game just clicks.

The Gaming Industry Is Broken

In the light of the recent wave of studio closures, I wanted to add my two cents to the hot topic of the never-ending lay-offs and obvious mismanagement that plagues the industry. Rather than just recounting the news however, I tried to look at what caused this unfortunate phenomenon of the past 18 months and how all this could've been avoided with a bit of foresight and respect towards basic e...

Phew, I gotta say I'm glad to be finally putting this one out. I started writing the script all the way back in July last year and later in September I edited together the first few minutes. Poor Things - Clumsy, Shocking and ultimately Empty
มุมมอง 3.3K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Poor Things is a surrealist story of Bella Baxter, a young woman with a childlike mind on her journey of self-discovery, emancipation and self-realization. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and featuring strong performances by Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, Poor Things seems to be, by all accounts, one of the top contenders heading into 2024 Academy Awards. But not everything about it is...

What makes Cyberpunk 2077 so memorable?
มุมมอง 386ปีที่แล้ว
In today's video we ask a simple question - what makes Cyberpunk 2077 special? The answer's a tiny bit more complex, though. Cyberpunk is a game that blew me away when I first played it in 2020 and I wanted to share some of my thoughts ever since then, but never found the time to do so. That is, until now. With Summer Game Fest 2023 and news update about the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion j...
Just wish the story was better. I LOVED Hellblade 1 but Hellblade 2 was easily forgotten. First class graphics but some how the world felt smaller than the 1st cause it wasn't connected, the combat felt like a downgrade in terms of gameplay, and the puzzles while not worst were not better. However it all depends on the story and while HB1 was Senua's journey, HB2 was a mess leaving the gamer to guess well if this is in her head, then it makes no sense what these other people are doing...
I absolutely loved this game! .. yes maybe its not really a 'game' move of a interactive movie :P but I thought it was really enjoyable
Great video. I enjoyed senuas saga for its storytelling and combat much more. Sacrifice had better mythology and flash backs that enhanced the story.
Thank you. Yeah, it has to be said that although the combat in Saga gets a lot of flak, it makes up for its lacking mechanical complexity by an incredibly visceral presentation. I've had multiple moments during my playtime when I caught myself doing that cathartic "Phew" after intense combat section, not really due to it being demanding, but rather thanks to the incredible animation work, sound design, etc.
I personally like both forms of the RPG genre, but kudos to sucker punch who have always kind of done this thing where they always thought it was a little scummy when something became a bullet sponge, but didn’t look too different from everything else, it’s a big reason why in insomniacs, Spider-Man, and ratchet and clank franchises if something has more health and does more damage, it’s going to look scarier and be more heavily armored, but it’s still gonna be gone in a decent amount of time. And that was the whole thing with sucker punch, naughty dog, and insomniac games they all made it to wear combat, and their games are fun. It’s the biggest reason why they are the three heavy hitters of Sony, When it comes to games. I a lot of this was talk to text so I apologize in advance if something looks wrong, but I am lazy and don’t want to go back and fix it. Hope y’all have a wonderful day.
In some games leveling is so pointless. Like Assassins Creed. As your level grows higher your enemies level grows higher at the exact same rate. So technically you and your enemies are always the same level. And they always take and do the same damage through the entire game.
Yeah, Assassin's Creed in particular is a great example of how a once great series lost its core DNA and became yet another infamously formulaic Ubisoft open world.
The game is amazing . 55 hours in and still haven’t beat it ahahaha I’ve been doing a lot of the side missions
I was the same, I refused to do the finale of each area until I absolutely 100% it
Well, I'm convinced. lol. Hats off to Sucker Punch for their approach to balancing.
I really like such musical analysis. Great video!
Corpos gonna corp
1:00:00 Not only did Charlotte an outstanding performance for Amicia, it is carried by an astonishing motion capture performance by actress Robyn Wolf. When you watch the cutscenes with sound off, Robyn's performance delivers every detail of Amicia's thoughts and emotions. Which also highlights the high quality of Amicia's CGI model, which is able to project all these details - it is incredible how alive her eyes appear. According to IMDB a live action series is in the works, but I personally would be much more interested in a full CGI rendered movie with Amicia's character model driven by Robyn's and Charlotte's performances; James Cameron's "Avatar" shows, that it is possible.
Good point, Robyn's mo-cap performance indeed played a vital role in bringing the character to life. Curious how the live action series turns out. I tend to be skeptical when it comes to these adaptations, but hopefully they pull it off nicely. Personally I much prefer classic filmmaking to fully CGI stuff, so that's that.
Great video
3:40 I take it as a sign that the story of Amicia and Hugo was the one they needed to get "out of their system" and when they had learned the tools and the technology was there, they started working on it. I think it shows, because the story telling is of such high integrity. As a consumer of art you know if an art work was "just a job" or a true labour of love, and the two APT games communicate that in abundance. The attention to detail put into the music and how it integrates into the story telling is just one example of that. The celebration of such detail as with your essay video is much appreciated!
Well said. I'm curious where Asobo goes from here, because the past few years proved that both the Plague Tale and MS Flight Sim teams are capable of great things. Definitely a studio to keep an eye on.
@@zSEN. I hope they establish themselves as Remedy did after their debut with "Max Payne" and its sequel. BlueTwelve with "Stray" is also a new studio coming from France like Asobo, that hopefully continues. And let's see how successful Ninja Theory is going to be this year.
@@TheTuubster Let's hope so. Regarding Ninja Theory, I'm eagerly awaiting Hellblade 2 and have immense respect for what they do, though I've no illusions about the commercial potential it has (or lacks, to be frank). It's not a game with mass market appeal and will therefore be fully dependent on whether its niche is big enough to sustain them financially. Not unlike Remedy's Alan Wake 2 that despite countless awards and obvious quality on display is not really a commercial hit. Though Hellblade will at least be aided by Steam availability and being on Gamepass, unlike AW2 with its Epic exclusivity. Hopefully they turn profit, because if not, I've a feeling that Microsoft will be soon inclined to disregard any artistic integrity of their acquired studios and will instead publish 200 new CoDs now that they own Activision.
@@zSEN. I am currently in the process of playing "Hellblade" and while the character's CGI model was already of a very high quality (in some aspects even better than Amicia's model as it could dilate the eye's pupils, while Amicia's pupils are static), it's skin was less realistic and the acting for Senua was quite melodramatic at times while Amicia's character was more grounded. I am interested to see if "Hellblade 2" finally breaks down the barriers between live action film and realtime rendered CGI. The term "interactive movie" could become full reality this year or the coming years. And with Generative AI, fully interactive virtual characters in its environments could become reality too (since Generative AI already runs almost entirely using the GPU and memory of consumer graphics cards; I can run chatbot LLM like Meta's Llama-2 entirely on my NVidia gfx card offline).
Big merci for this great video!
Appreciate you taking the time to stop by and check it out, Olivier. Already looking forward to your future projects, love the innovation and attention to detail you bring to the music and its implementation.
Great deep dive. I caught some of these leitmotifs, but I appreciate having the ones I missed pointed out. Cute to mention "keeping it relatively brief" at the one hour mark. ;) Love the joke at 1:09:39 too. The work is of high quality, I hope this gets the engagement you want.
Emphasis on the "relatively" hehe. Glad you found it interesting. And yeah, there are a few little hidden jokes like that scattered around, great to see they're being picked up on :)
While we are, one more time, getting our anual dose of the modern sacred cow of "female oppression and victimism by the patriarchy", its actually very difficult to see nowadays movies which display the sufferings of "normal" men. There are some movies that touch slightly on that issue, in a true peripheral and almost accidental way, but as they do not adress those manhood problems in a really deliberate and conscious way, they always remain in the realm of the caricature like Patrick Bateman or Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, characters to be repudiated or laughed at. Sad to see that modern cinema is so one-sighted.
Beautifully filmed and artistically designed, this "edgy" film (at least its "Dogtooth" director is) was essentially an empty exercise in exploitative "furious jumping" that took over 3/4 of the audience's time with a pointless absurdist pseudo-agenda that bored rather than inspired. An absurdist pointless and subhuman story that reminds one of John Water's Pink Flamingos "cult movies".
This is the worst movie I've ever seen. And it's a reflection of the minds of the director, the people who liked it and praised it that left me disgusted. It's what men THINK women want but actually in reality is what MEN want and think. And what do they think women's freedom is? Whoring themselves??!? Soo half-assed a disguise about some ideology. All I could see is how they like their women- retarded in a full grown woman's body wanting sex?!?! What a fucked up sick perverted male fantasy. It's not true at all for women. That's what most men liking and approving of this movie want to women. All what the men liking this movie can see for women's freedom is sexual freedom?! In the form of degrading to whoring? Is this the peak of most men's porn fantasies getting Oscar nominations and awards? Sure it is when most people voting are old white men. Oscars are fucked for nominating this in directing and acting over Barbie . Barbie looks like heaven standing next to this. This is NOT feminism. It's the opposite. To say it is feminist is an insult. Big insult. I cannot believe it's praised. I cannot believe it has Oscar nominations. Society is fucked. Poor Things is a shallow shallow, pathetic, dumb ideology where men get off on each other. To see Barbie getting so much hate and bad reviews, meanwhile THIS bullshit is what's praised and what actually wins??!!!???Pathetic. What a loss.
great analysis. i so agree and i haven't seen many people share the same take. i love yorgos lanthimos' other films, i'd say dogtooth does the misogyny commentary So much better than poor things. poor things could have had way more potential but falls flat like you said.
You've expressed in thorough detailed analysis all that I've been trying to say about why I was disappointed and unmoved by the film & her experiences and antics! The story's narrative played out through Bella sabotages it's own social / moral messaging! There are gaps in the father and daughter relationship and Bella's cold nature makes her acting seem forced as she "somewhat" transitions from a cruel AI robot-child-sex FrankenHooker to a wise book reading, creator of a daddy-husband slave goat & dominating wife to a Weasel whimpering Scientist! It's a dumb-down film that's easy for the masses to fawn over! FIRST OFF, THEY KILL THE BABY! but whatever this fairytale was about, the message was ruined by the woman-child sex abuse and the boredom of everything else thereafter! Her Dad should have given her some money and taught her self-respect before she left!! And why his his face reconstructed? LOL!! And using "GOD" as a pun for him was weak along with her tiresome journey. All of it to simply ending with her going back home to a feeble doddering companion! Dorothy & Toto had way much more fun, joy, excitement and adventure than Bella. Glad she didn't need money at the end because isn't that why she was prostituting herself only to discover that most men are misogynists. WELL I'LL BE! She'd already learnt that! People got lost in the bling and hype but "POOR THINGs" isn't really that deep, intricate, complex or dramatic of an experience for 2:20 mins. It's SHALLOW and HALLOW! It wasn't even a good psychological Dark Comedy let alone a well developed surreal fantasy Horror movie!! Give me The Shape of Water, Amelie or even The Wizard of OZ anyday for something of true surreal substance. THANK YOU FOR YOUR REVIEW!!! I didn't realize anyone understood the problems with this film, in the way that I did!!! Reply
Overrated, chliche and anti-feminst movie actually.
A perspective coming from someone that agrees more with radical feminism, I don't get how liberal feminist Hollywood portrays prostitution and self sexualization as better than getting married to one person and giving birth to their children. Has anyone else noticed this or am I exaggerating? I haven't seen the movie yet but I spoiled myself on accident and that's the vibe I got.
You might be on to something. Big part of the Poor Things is a sense of liberation by exploring one's sexuality, but it definitely felt rather excessive to me. You could cut half of the sex scenes and the narrative wouldn't suffer at all, it actually might even be beneficial for the pacing of the movie. Now factor in how Bella's basically a kid in a grown-up's body and the sex suddenly feels not just unnecessary, but straight up wrong and disturbing.
Agree, it was so sick. If she is a kid, then her mental faculties are comprised and any sex scene is wrong.@@zSEN.
@@zSEN. yeah I just don't like the premise and the message, it's creepy
Trust me, I hate this movie but your viewpoint is also problematic. Prostitution isn't the liberating force this movie thinks is but for many women, typical marriage and children also isn't liberation - just check r/regretful parents. The point is liberation for women looks different for different women, feminism is about allowing us to make that call for ourselves.
This movie doesn’t. As much as sex is depicted as liberating and empowering in this movie, it’s almost equal in depicting it as easily becoming unfulfilling and even oppressive. While Bella initially finds being a sex worker empowering as she’s getting paid to do something she loves and is getting to truly make her way in the world for the first time, she immediately becomes disenchanted with the profession when she realizes she doesn’t get to choose her customers and finds her job tedious, repulsive at times and unfulfilling. But being her only current means of an income and shelter, she tolerates it and uses her time off the clock to grow as a person and expand her mind. The movie ends with her discovering what she really wants to do and pursuing that.
First movie I’ve ever walked out of
before or after the first 15 minutes? (the movie changes a lot afterwards)
The main content of the film is sex, mainly copulation, but we also have onanising, biting, choking and lesbian licking. In short, it's a perverse gore in a colourful setting, as empty and toxic as all so-called pop-culture made in USA.
You didn't get it and miss the point. The Film is not about feminism (or socialism), but the protagonist is female so unavoidably, there will be some element of that, if your premise and expectation was wrong, of course you won't get it.
As I said directly in the video, this is a subjective look with a limited scope where the intent isn't to deconstruct every aspect of the movie, but rather to offer my read on some of the presented themes. I'll just add that I went to see Poor Things blind, with no preconceptions, avoiding reviews and most of the promotional material to be as unbiased as possible. And obviously, I remain open to different interpretations.
No. Actually you missed the point. :)
You are the one who missed the pont...the source material is different to the movie
@@dlc2479 So what? who's talking about the source material? Whatever makes you happy, I don't really care.
Godwin doesnt get a pass from me. He took away a woman's autonomy by experimenting on her body without her consent and contemplated molesting his "daughter." Max also sucks, but not for the reason you stated. He lusted after a " pretty retard" and agreed to marry the mental child in order to keep her at home.
Unbelievably conceited. Worse, REN thinks they're accurate in their observations, a tragic belief. But that mirror he tells us is compelling. This addiction imho won't release REN to observe objectively. It's painful to feel the need to nowe let this travesty bang our ears. There's no statement in the move as to whether or not Bella's mother was alive when taken out of the Thames, I assume. We all know the Thames is COLD. When the body falls from such a height, given what we see of the event, the body hit the water flat on or in a way to result in shock, both the impact and the temperature. But REN fabricates a self serving story that the body was alive when it floated into the river or was pulled to the shore. She died; she didn't moan and be in refrigerated condition. But REN of course can explain in more details their posit. Ouch. There are more, but this is an ad nauseum series of RENs. So many others with erudite, intellectually accurate reviews.
If you enjoy reading books, give the original novel by Alasdair Gray a go. It tackles the same topics as the movie in greater depth. I watched the movie, read the book and watched the movie again. I find them both very enjoyable and thought-provoking. Your observations are great as well!
Thanks for the suggestion, I might do so.
you brought up some excellent points i haven't encountered in other reviews. thanks!
Thank you, happy to hear that!
I loved this movie as it doesn't take itself seriously. A man feeling offended by the lack of "real men" or men being ridiculed too much was just what I expected. I do appreciate this review though, well done on the communism trope ☺️
you go in expecting a masterpiece but you forget that today's filmmakers (save for Scorese and Schrader) know NOTHING about subtley and nuance. @@zSEN. Woke is not only broke, like this movie proved, but also heavy-handed like you mentioned. Watch the films "Destry Rides Again, "Johnny Guitar" and the Mexican film, "Rio Escondido" (Hidden River). These could all be described as "feminist" even today, and the best feminist, do NOT lecture or posture. The message comes out in the character and their actions.
Just finished the video, 10/10. Makes me so hyped up to play cyberpunk from the beginning again when phantom liberty drops!
Thanks. You won't be the only one returning for a new playthrough, that's for sure.
perfect essay. been wanting someone to talk about these things with this clarity now.
Regarding choices, i agree there is way more then people realise especially peeps that play it just once. Pawel Sasko said that they will most likely change their tactic in the future, since more numerous subtle changes that happen dont seem to registre with some people, that they will have to hammer down those differences in a more obvious way to point them out since, clearly, they went under the radar with some "gamers"
I'm quite curious myself how they handle it in Phantom Liberty. I'm all for more weigth behind the choices, but I sure hope they won't make the consequences immediately obvious for everyone to notice. The more subtle and nuanced approach feels more rewarding imo.
@@zSEN. I just think they will make them less subtle, so that we can more easily recognise what leads to characters saying and/or doing things this way or that way. So, that even people that play it once will get the input from the game more clearly on what lead them to this or that path and at what moments their choices mattered the most, because without that people that play it once get the feeling that the consequences they got are the same for anyone else, because the game is too subtle at times at pointing them out. Then again, idk how worthwhile it is to do so, some peeps just skip the dialogue scenes, barely pay attention, skip sidequests and then bitch about choices, i always get the feeling peeps like that are the loudest to want about it. And also they did mention that they have to focus on more bigger choices and consequences, those are by definition easyer to notice, rat h then subtle differences in dialogues, which is a great detail, but most newbies wont ever notice it so they get the wrong impression.
Going to check this video out tomorrow. Seems like a really good watch!
A very well put one! Subbed!
Thanks, appreciate it!
