Aborted Takeoff 25 Dec 24
So winter and cold, decided to warm up the engine despite being able to start it as low as 25 F. I ended up leaving the door unlatched on top of the cowling. As soon as I became airborne, I saw it flip open. Thought I could just go around, but then decided I had so much runway ahead, I'd just land it. No flaps, so I was going faster than normal landing, and I didn't use brakes after landing as I wanted to get to the end of the runway to shut down and latch the door. Uneventful flight afterwards.

      This was so long ago, and there were so many problems. I had a mag coil HV lead shorting to ground, always had hard starting till I replaced everything (ignition wise) and finally a new starter did the trick... till it got cold. I just installed the Rotec electronic ignition and it started up right away in 40 degree weather. Day before, I had to warm the CHT's to 90 degrees before it would start.

      What? Just both wing tank fuel quantity readings were bad, aileron trim switch wired backwards, RPM indication all over the gauge, Choke broken, not adjusted properly, Carb heat not adjusted properly, Pitot hose loosely held on with heat shrink under fuel tubing, AOA tubing fell off, Regulator fried and popping C/B, and of course now I have the engine issues and the Strobe light C/B popping! And I had to swap pitot probes, the newer Dynon one seems to not read as accurately as the old tube style, and of course because of that, I have to figure out how to get a 1/8" NPT to go to a 1/4" PTFE tubing and re tube the whole aircraft cause it has 6mm tubing and NO WHERE can I find a 6mm to 6mm PTFE hose straight through fitting with sleeves. (or without). Plus EVERY day I have off is 25 degrees and hurricane winds. What?

    Fully drain you tank, see how much it takes to top it off! Till then, don't plan on 16 gallons!

    • @F111BMATHIS
      @F111BMATHIS 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You wouldn't believe the amount of testing I went through with those tanks! I bought the aircraft knowing the fuel quantity was faulty. One tank read 0 all the time, the other read 6 gallons all the time. I replaced the fuel sensors, then to calibrate it, I drained the tanks and added one gallon at a time till full and measured the gas level at the filler cap (when it got up that high). I did get 16 gallons in, but they are really 15 gallon tanks. When this venting happened, I was at 11.5 gallons on each tank, way below full. The fuel vent is the part that kills me, its a tube I'm guessing around 1/2" in diameter! Why would you ever need a vent that large? And it is about 1/4" from the highest level of the tank. So as far as fuel level and vent goes, I believe it's just too large a vent tube. Maybe could use a baffle! Actually, that's not a bad idea...

    seems to happen when you make right turns, causing the fuel to push up and out of the tank.. i think your vent line is too low inside the tank, or not bent properly to allow for venting.

    • @pk-so1mj

      If it’s anything like one of the planes I fly, it is returning fuel to the left tank that isn’t being used by the engine. Usually happens when the boost pump is on. If both tanks are full fuel from the right wing returns to the left wing and then over flows. I’m sure there would be a note in the POH to say start on left tank if both tanks are full.

    What was OAT at the time of filling? What was the temp of the wing when filling? What was the temp of the fuel when filling? This kind of thing happens often when cooler fuel is put into a warmer wing, and the fuel expands in the tank. Jut because it was only 11.5 in a 16 tank doesn't mean that expansion didn't occur, and the fact that it only happened in the turn just leads me to believe that this was just a bit of thermal expansion in the tank, and it sloshed out when you turned. Did it happen to the right wing in a right turn? If so, then this is pretty normal. However I do agree that going to vented caps is better way to go. I've seen this same thing happen in a Dassault Falcon 50 for the same reason.

    • @F111BMATHIS
      @F111BMATHIS ปีที่แล้ว

      OAT about 30 F, about the same when filled to 12 gallons, they don't tell me the temp of the fuel, but the hose was cold! The fuel had been sitting in the aircraft for a few days before these flights. Could not see the right wing, but I'm really interested to see that side. Vented gas caps don't seem like a reality, so I'm going to stick something in the vent line to decrease the size. I mean sure, be a vent, but I don't need a 1/2" vent (its probably 3/8")

      I'm not sure who's fault it is. The original owner/builder died in another aircraft, it was going to his Grandson, but the kid didn't want to fly, so it was sold. The guy I got it from didn't seem to involved with fixing things. I think he may have not even known or cared. I knew about the fuel indication problems, I told him I'd fix it and I did. But the Aileron trim being backwards (10 minute fix) the RPM indication jumping all over the place (3K ohm resistor) the alternator C/B popping (New regulator), the compass not able to calibrate - unreliable (remounted in rear of baggage area), the choke cable jamming up unable to use (re-routed cable) the cabin heat cable broke so its full on cooking my CFI (again re-routed and secured cable), Airspeed all over the place, unreliable ( tubes loosely placed with fuel tubing, repaired with compression fittings), and now I've found the pitch cable rubbing on a rear bulkhead and the aileron cables! Oh and had to re-route electrical so it wasn't caught up on the pitch tube, and the landing and taxi lights cause the radio to squeal, so I have new LED lights from rigid industries (that's today's project since dumb dumb is in town so we can't fly!)
