Self bandaging for Arm Lymphedema
Learn how to effectively apply compression bandaging for lymphedema in the upper extremity with Dr. Berfin, a specialist in lymphedema and cancer rehab. Don't miss out on this step-by-step guide to self bandaging for arm lymphedema and subscribe for more helpful tips!
Compression bandaging is a critical component of managing breast cancer-related lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling due to the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, often following breast cancer treatment such as surgery or radiation therapy.
Compression bandages used for managing lymphedema typically consist of several key components. Here is a list of items you will need for self bandaging;
1. Stockinette as a base layer to protect the skin from irritation. 6, 8, or 10 cm for the upper extremity. www.bandagesplus.com/tricofix
2. Mollelast for wrapping fingers (I use 6cm x 4m in this video): www.bandagesplus.com/mollelast
3. Comprilan short stretch bandages ( one 6cm, one 8cm, three 10cm): www.bandagesplus.com/comprilan
Compression bandaging is a widely used method for managing lymphedema, but there are several contraindications and precautions to consider to ensure safety
- Acute infections
- Acute DVT
- Severe peripheral Arterial Disease
- Cardiac Edema
- Uncontrolled Congestive Heart Failure
- Loss of sensation (relative contraindication)

      Thank you for your question. Once the incision fully heals and closes, scar tissue massage can be initiated. I typically start with gentle scar tissue massage first and then increase the pressure as the tissue heals more and becomes more pale.

    Physical Therapists are not the only ones who can help patients with cording. What is most important is the training and certification the professional has in this procedure. Patients must look for someone with these letters after their name: CMLDT or CLT or MLD-C. The professional will be a Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist or Certified Lymphedema Therapist. They will be a nurse, massage therapist, PT, or OT.

      You can see the doctor who is treating you for the condition that caused the cording or your primary care doctor. They can refer you to a physical or occupational therapist. When looking for a physical or occupational therapist it is important to ask if they have experience treating cording.

    Is this safe to do if you have head and neck cancer that is in the lymph nodes of the neck? I have thyroid cancer that metastasised to the lymph nodes in the neck. My neck is still painful and swollen 2 months out from surgery. I had my thyroid removed along with many lymph nodes. I believe thats why I have swelling and I have no idea what to do. I am having treatment next week to take care of the rest of the cancer cells (hopefully) and I am looking for ways to reduce the swelling. If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

    • @BerfinMahmut
      @BerfinMahmut ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for you comment! Lymphatic drainage is generally safe even for patients with active cancer and/or metastasis but I have had some patients whose doctors advised holding off drainage. Therefore, I would recommend consulting your healthcare team first. Also, I offer free 15 minute consultations. If you are interested, feel free to contact me via email.

    Hey Berfin! This is such good info! How long should the tape lengths be measured out to reach down to on each finger?

    • @BerfinMahmut
      @BerfinMahmut ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the location of the swelling! The tape should definitely cover the swollen area. The strips can end either where the swelling ends or go past it about an inch or so; the goal is to cover as much surface area as we can. I typically “anchor” the end right below the elbow. Please let me know if you have any other questions!
