Terrific filming. Love the drone work.
@@JohnnyParker17 thank you!
Thank you for wonderful views and fabulous drone footage, the Autumn colours were lovely. Well done for completing the journey, you must be so very proud of your achievement. Can we have drone and Rusty cam on the next one please? 😃
@@tonyplant2337 thank you 😀. I still can’t quite believe that I’ve completed the SUW on my bike! My certificate did arrive a few days ago which helped to make it ‘official’. Rusty would love to be in charge of a camera….I’m not sure what state the camera would be in after being attached to Rusty though - he likes to roll in the grass and lie in puddles to cool down 😂.
Great series of videos. Really enjoying your adventures.
@@Tricky909 thank you! I’m glad you liked them.
Well done. An excellent achievement. This part brought back memories of my autumn hike from Berwick upon Tweed to Innerleithen. The old brain still remembers a surprising amount of what you filmed. Those descents where you cut between POV and drone footage were very effective.
@@thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233 thank you ☺️. It’s a lovely part of the country. Flatter and drier than the west. Sounds like a nice hike.
Another fantastic watch whilst sitting in the nice warm house 🤣🤣What make is the fattie please?

@@mtbfree4914 Miss my fattie. Had a Bergamont Deer Hunter. Looking at possibly getting another bike.
@ you can never have enough bikes (n+1) 😂. There’s always room for +1 bike. Came close to selling my bucksaw at one point but very glad I didn’t because it saved me on the SUW trip - I would have given up on a skinny tyres bike.
brilliant! Lovely to see that you finished! Again - I tried it and quit in the first 40-50 miles or so - well done you! I'll have to go back now I know it's hard but possible!! thanks for sharing!
@@richardlsharpe thanks. Now that I’ve completed it I don’t think I’d rush to do it again. Although I would do sections as day trips. Go on you can do it too 🚵♂️

I am still discovering these great videos of yours. Thank you for a lovely film. I had a little run up there on my Brompton in the summer and failed 🤣. I will have another go next time I am there on something less ridiculous. Have you completed this loop back to Garlieston?

Fabulous scenery, shame that the weather was bad, the rain you endured looked like you needed to build an Ark! As a very, very slow cyclist I am amazed at the speed you fly down those hills and narrow tracks. Thank you for a beautiful film, showing the wonderful scenery of Dumfries & Galloway and the Borders.
@@tonyplant2337 thank you for your lovely comments. I’d like to ride that section again in the dry it would be even better. I’m not as gung-ho and fast as I used to be- too many injuries! One more part to come. Hope to see you up this way again soon.

I’ve watched this and your second video on this route, and it looks tough going - I admire your mental and physical stamina to stick at it! Just wondered what frame bag you’re using on your Tallboy(?). Reason I ask is because I have the same bike in large, and have been looking for a frame bag to fit it. Is yours a custom made thing, or an off the shelf one?
@@bowglie thanks 🙏. It’s been a tough route, I’ve started so I may as well finish it 😂. The frame bag is made by lomo. Here’s the link - www.lomo.co.uk/products/bike-frame-dry-bag/ I got it on sale, it’s back up to full price now but still cheap compared to other manufacturers. It’s been great 👍. Cheers and happy riding 🚵♂️.

@@gordonbeattie6816 we will 😂. Thank you!
Thank you for a wonderful film. You must be so proud to have completed that section, what an epic adventure you had. The two days of sunshine compared to the last day in the rain and wind must have been a real challenge. I think I would have had a sense of humour failure with that barbed wire 🤣.
@@tonyplant2337 I think I’ll feel proud of myself once I’ve completed the whole route. Right now I’m hoping I can complete it! The hot days were almost as much of a challenge as the wet day because the hot days were almost too hot 🥵. I’m glad you liked it and thank you for watching 😀.
Those bog sections really have to be ridden to be experienced how tough they are to get through, fat bike certrainly comes in handy there I have plus tyres on ebike they do not too bad but still have to walk some sections of boggy terrain, kudos to those uphill climbs great scenery on ride great drone shots thanks for sharing! 😁🤙

Great video thank you. I have had terrible problems with my hope pistons seizing solid so bad the wheel won't go round. I have used the silicon grease and also dot fluid on a cotton bud. Even after that the pistons are seized solid. I have destroyed two sets of pistons now trying to push them back in. This is then an expensive bike shop repair each time. There pistons are extremely fragile and break very easily. What can you suggest ?
@@daviddean15 hi, when pushing the pistons back in be sure to apply pressure evenly to the pistons otherwise they will not push back into their bores (because they’re being pushed in very slightly crooked). You can also open the bleed valve on the caliper slightly (wrap a cloth around it to catch any fluid) and push the pistons in evenly. Although this may require that you bleed the brake afterwards. You can use a robust tyre lever to push the pistons back in - this is less likely to damage the pistons. Hope sell a rebuild kit and spare pistons. It’s easy enough to rebuild the brake yourself if you take your time. The brake will need bled after a rebuild. Hope this helps.
Very intresting to see the Southern Upland Way route, they boggy sections can be a bugger like you say hard to guess how swampy they are. When youre stopping for the night do you basically stay over in the bothies? Just curious how you plan this as would like to do some routes that may take a few days. Lovely drone footage on the days with good weather. That bracken and thick grass sections are tough to cut through. Enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing and looking forwawrd to next part 😁👍.
@@emtb-explorer thank you for your comments. I’ve either been doing day trips and getting dropped off at the start and collected at the end. On the legs that are further away my partner has supported me with our motorhome. I have stayed in some of the bothies many years ago on 2 day trips. Another option is that some of the towns have hostels so travelling light with just a change of clothes would work on some legs. Hope this helps 😃. Happy biking.

@@tonyplant2337 it was great to meet you recently- thank you for stopping to say hello 😃 I really appreciated it. Thank you for your encouraging comments too 🙌. Best wishes.
This is excellent!! - We've had the SUW on the bucket list for a few years but never seem to get the right combination of weather/time & fitness (mostly fitness to be honest!!) - I knew their would be steps on day 1 but they looked a nightmare... getting my 85lb packed fatty up there will be tramatic I suspect. I've done a few sections (Castle Kennedy to Clatteringshaws) as we're somewhat local to the area and from what I had done I thought the obstacles (anywhere you need to lift really) were fairly minimal - sounds like they are worse further on from your narrative - regardless looking forwards to the second installment! - ATB Tom
Hey Tom, thanks for your comments. I think you would need to take all bags off bike and carry seperately up the steps - they were very steep and also some big steps too. Many of the gates are full size and have a small 'walkers' gate built into them. However I found many of these type of gates were locked or wedged shut with a massive boulder meaning that I couldn't open the full size gate. It was often a struggle to lift my bike through the walkers gate as it was narrow and is designed to swing closed on its own. Had an epic day on leg 4 - almost broke me - change of bike definiately a good choice I think for future legs!
Sense of humour failure?? Haha you have to have one in the first place.
Maybe some work should be carried out on the trail. Some of the sections certainly looked very steep.
Yeah, it is more of a walkers trail however it does say on the SUW website that it is suitable for mtbs with the exceptions of the first bit along the coast at Portpatrick, and the last section along the coast at cocksburnpath.
The narration sounds like you are reciting something from a Janet and John book....very droll.
Well done you twa. Epic trip. Done about 95% of the route over the years since I retired! The track from Tomintoul down the River Avon is very very special. So glad I live in Scotland, we have endless quiet trails everywhere, and no problems wild camping outside the national parks.
