      Those walls are speaking, both residents and staff are recording the important history and we are storing this for future use. The job of recording is huge and often troubled by the death of ex staff, families and residents. We have limited time.

    I am commenting in 2021, when the asylum was first built on the edge of a small village there were acres of farm land as part of the hospital to provide milk, meat, eggs, fruit and vegetables. When the hospital was improved/expanded in the 60’s most of the old hospital farm land was built on. The psychiatric hospital was a town within a town as the village gradually grew around it. The original Willow Court was mostly left intact, and makes up what is becoming a historic precinct. It is still only a small town, population about 7,000 surrounded by farms half an hour from the capital of Tasmania. It’s a true gem

  • @loriscook5231
    @loriscook5231 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very old fashioned interview now but a good record of psychiatric care in the past. I’m moving to New Norfolk soon, most of the buildings from the 60’s have been demolished. Some of those left have new lives, there is a child care/education centre, a large Men’s Shed drop in centre and small businesses on the East side site plus streets of new housing popping up. On the older Willow Court site nearby there are antique shops and a restaurant and appartments and plans to further reuse the older historic buildings. Because Willow Court is only a short walk to the main shopping street with large beautiful trees in parts of the old hospital grounds the ghost buildings will continue to live on on in the future.

My grandfather left lots of tales after working in the hospitals.. It's not as bad as people Think.. It's worse

      We also must remember that lots of medications that are used today were not available in the past, the only options were seclusion and restraint, both used as best practice at the time.

      Yeah, I don’t think she is talking only about the barbaric ‘treatments’. Not to mention some of the ‘treatments’ are on par with the condemned experiments done by nazis in WWII. We should focus on learning from this dark element of Tasmanian history, not defending it.
