I have shorten my stem on my gravel bike from 110mm to 65mm. So much better as I am getting older and riding in a more up right position. I shorten the stems on all my MTB also! I even installed a 65mm nitto stem on my 1981 Fuji Del Rey!
Agree. My mountain bike is a GT also and they live in the same bike rack. As I was looking at them one day and realizing how similar much of the geometry was, I decided to give it a shot.
I had an experience speaking to a distinguished order Italian gentleman years ago at a bike show in SOCAL. He was with.Masi bicycles, and they were promoting a custom frame build to me. I had told him that i had put a 100mm stem on my road bike, down from the 120mm stem to bring the reach more to my liking. What he demonstrated to me with a display bike having a very long stem was how the arc of the long stem brought the handlebar drops out and away from my knees in a turn avoiding contact with my hands. I told him that I had been experiencing that with my shortened stem. Thats one of the trade offs I'll live with (there are others).
Good point. I checked the distance from my knees to the bars for climbing, etc. and it’s fine. I’ve not noticed a problem with this yet, but I will check it out when this cold goes away.
From a old roadie perspective stem length has been more about getting the right reach. Too long and and neck and shoulders feel it. Too short and you feel cramped and can't stretch out comfortably. It's about finding that Goldilocks position on your bike. But none of that matters if you're happy with it. It's not stupid if you like it.
Thanks! I did the same thing on my mountain bike so I guess it’s my preference. Feels like I can put that front wheel exactly where I want it now.
How are the Zoom brakes working out for you? I bought the same bike and I'm watching your videos and getting some ideas. The brakes are a concern.
I put on some Jagwire cable and things have been fine. Honestly, my only complaint is sometimes that little pad clip rattles on the front brake, but functionally, they work well. Way better than what came on the bike, they seem to stop as well as anything else, but being mechanical, you feel it in the lever, unlike on my mountain bike.
@@thebikefam thank you
Looks good and if you like it all the better. I always liked short stems. Feels more confident.
My 56cm gravel bike came with a 100mm stem and I changed it out for a 130mm stem to match my 56cm road bike. A gravel bike is basically a road bike that can go off-road, and the ideal road bike position has you stretched out so your lungs are open and your back is flat. It's actually very comfortable once you get used to it. Keep riding and keep experimenting!
I've had to shorten my CX stem several times because a longer stem is great for steering stability and being aero, but the racing position makes my hands numb because the stack height of the bike is low and aggressive. Now I'm using a 30 degree riser @ 100mm, which is an effective 80mm stem. I might switch back to a lower rise, but even shorter stem, like a 17 degree rise at 90mm. Road and gravel bikes MAY have very different geometries depending on what you buy.
@@JanGoh-jb5ge Whatever works best! I'm a former road racer and got a Cervelo R5cx for gravel as the geometry is very similar to my Cervelo road bike. I can hop from one bike to the other and the fit is exactly the same.
I've got a 31mm on my dropbar Krampus (69.5 HA) and it's fine with 500mm wide bars. Rulezman nails it on this video - th-cam.com/video/oCi9LzaMm10/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=RULEZMANSUSPENSION
I had to shorten my stem due to me buying a 56 when maybe I should’ve gotten a 54. I can’t tell a difference in steering maybe because my focus is on hand numbness, sore butt and pain behind my knees.
Dang sorry man. I wasn’t a big fan of the factory seat, but the two I’ve tried after have been good. Took some adjusting to get them just right.
@ I have a 3D printed seat knock off of the SWorks mirror seat. It had good TH-cam reviews but it is definitely harder comparing the two.
I reduced the stem on my gravel bike a few steps (down from 100mm to 70mm) and considering a 60mm. Been happy so far but I wonder if needing a step that short might mean I should have gone a size down on my frame. Maybe it means I need to work on my flexibility so the reach isn't as problematic. No idea but food for thought.
Same thoughts. I read the bike should have been spec with a 60 mm stem, which is what felt pretty good to me. I’m not sure why I have the 80 mm out of the box. But the 35 so far I like best.
grifters all day , on my 20' 29' and 700c
I find myself riding this bike the most on ride outs lately because these tires are so good.
I tried this , was nice on descents and singletrack, less nice up hills
Gravelbikes have a longer wheelbase than a road bike, changing to a shorter stem doesn't make it more twitchy in my experience. My road bike has a 100m stem and is more twitchy than my gravel bike with a 60mm stem.
Thanks! I’ve had a lot of online bike fit “experts“ with a lot of opinions. I think this bike in particular is well suited for this stem. Thanks for watching and commenting!
watch your knees when you stand and climb
Thanks. Checked it, plenty of space.
I think if you like it and it keeps you comfortable on the bike after a few longer rides keep it as is. It is easy to switch back if not. Let us know how it goes.
Will do. Couple rides so far and it’s great. Going to try some new tires and take it down a hill, and report back.
A lil less reach and a lil less leverage for a gravel bike makes perfect sense for a more comfortable and responsive ride.
You couldn’t get something this cheap in Canada, that’s actually a great deal
Perfect weather for a ride too
Great video, keep going.😍
It’s not I ran bigger ones on my devotion and it whistled like a train every time I hit the brakes …. Now I run the smaller ones and stopping power is the best and sound is minimal
Rollin Deep 🇺🇸🤘😎🤘🇺🇸
I ride the same bike. First thing I swapped (had extra parts laying around) was the seat and post, and went to a 2.2 tire. But 2 years now only thing i aint touched is the wheels and cranks. Everything else has been upgraded, even a 36t sprocket and a 16t cassette
It’s a solid bike for sure. Thanks for commenting!
Great restore!!!
Thank you!
I'll take it! Yes please. My WTP Atlas 24 seems a little small for me.
Awesome vid! Just scored this bike for $975 on an online BF sale. About the same I paid in 1996 for a GT performer🤣 👍👍🇺🇸
Very nice!
You two are just awesome, love your videos. The bike looks super slick in all black with those white details.
Wow thanks!
Just put these in my 97 performer to finish out the build, always an excellent upgrade. Got ‘em on 3 builds
Awesome bike! Thanks for watching!
It IS nice paint, my BK is sparkly too. GT always used to have the best paint schemes. Not a fan of blue, but THAT blue is beautiful
Right on. Yes that blue was hard to pass up. Thanks!
Nice 👍
Hi. Can u tell me what color tyres these are please? & where to get them? I have the same big ripper, & need to get some sent all the way to New Zealand
Bozack is the model of tire, skin wall with light blue. I think there is also a darker blue, but I got the one I intended to receive. I bought them from Albe’s BMX, but I believe they are sold out now.
I run these on my 29er build as well an love them got mine from source for like 50$ each love the sealed high flange box look!
Yes these were a great upgrade. Thanks!
Were Can I buy the bike?
Citygrounds.com
You know what, they didn’t have blue when I looked.
What did u do with the old front gear? I need one. How much?
We've got one or two saved. Where you at?
@ San Antonio Tx. I’m trying to go back to stock for my son. Then gradually put upgrades back on so my son can evolve with this bike. I’m handing it down. Looking for other parts too shocks. Brake levers, calibers … everything basically. lol
Yeah email me, I should have a lot of stuff as we took it off both of our aggressor’s and saved most of it. You should be able to find my email on our page. I’m really pretty new with this.
@ all good me too earned a sub. I just started posting too.
have the same bike these are my upgrades SR Suntour GVX SQ Lab saddle Ergon seatpost (leaf springy one) Microshift Sword (1x) Paul Klampers (gift from my sister) Crankbrothers Synthesis Alloy rim (gift from my sister) Budget sealed bearing hub (6 pawls)
What would you say is/are the best upgrades you’ve done?
Nice job on the video! GT tried out that "new" style logo, and the feedback was overwhelmingly negative so a running change has been made back to the classic logo design ( I prefer the classic as well). Hopefully you are enjoying your bike!
Thanks Forrest! So far it’s great. I definitely like this logo better, it was a nice surprise. Thanks for the help!
What travel is your fork? The aggressor comes with a 100mm, can I upgrade it to 120mm?
I believe that Judy is a 120
And yes you can
Love that bike your on.❤
Thanks! It was pretty basic, but after all of the upgrades, I can’t tell you how much I like it too
Look at a Venzo saddle (seat) maybe a sram rival axs flat top chain. just a thought. fun bikes for sure..
Is those stems just as strong like let’s say an s&m shredneck? I’m having a hard time justifying $80 for a stem… seems like that GT should be plenty strong.
I wouldn’t be able to compare the two, but it seems plenty strong. I wouldn’t ride it otherwise!
Just happened upon your channel and quite glad I did. Great content, high quality! Keep up the great work and hopefully others will find you as I did.
Much appreciated!
Are yhe tires tge 65 PSI or 110 psi version?
Says 60psi on the sidewall.
@@thebikefam thanks, I'm really considering ordering it. Just want a few extras. High PSI tires and 28 tooth sprocket, maybe pegs, hubgaurds decide whether to swap my free coaster back and forth
Just got back into bikes recently with my 8 and 4 year old - both just learned to ride with no training wheels! I had a gt bump and Mach one as a kid. Seeing you and your son work on stuff together is great! Keep the longer vids coming - great channel! Thanks
Thank you! That’s awesome about the training wheels. I’m about to try a balance bike with my youngest. We’ll see how that goes.
@@thebikefam we also used a balance bike - they are great he had that till we came across a bike with training wheels and that seemed to be a good transition to really riding!!
Awesome!!!
Thanks!
Great video!!! Awesome to see the Family all into the Big BMX! Subscribed!!!
Hey thanks a lot, hope you enjoy!
good vid as always i might upgrade pedals next
Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’m sure if I mention it he’ll have a couple picked out before bed.
has he thought about getting a half link chain?
Actually, we meant to get one by now. Somehow I screwed that up, but we should get that done in the next couple weeks...
I don’t know what sizes of bikes for me to get I’m probably around 5’3 or 5’4 and I’m thirteen I want this bike but what size should I get?????
26” will work and fit if you get bigger. 29” should be ok too many of my sons friends are same size and have no issues.
Yoo tengo una Bicicleta GT California Aniquelada Antigua Y negra bien bonita
Nice!
I just got this bike and im 5’5 and im scared its gonna be too big
Our 5’7” friend days you’ll be fine. 😎
Just ordered my Grade last night. I’m curious if those sensors you installed work with Strava…I see the app Symbol on there info but I don’t see where I would pair it in Strava
We’re going to find out this weekend and I’ll post a video. I ordered another set for my mtb.
@@thebikefam nice thanks! As I said it would be interesting to see!
can you put pegs on this bike?
Yes he had them on for a while, but they got in the way he said so he removed them. I think they must be in some of our videos when the bike was first assembled
@@thebikefam alr thanks
