BLK LBL Black Label integrated bipod hand guard for Sig Cross
A handguard for the Sig Cross that includes an intrgrated bipod is seriouly cool. I sitll don't know if I should call is BLK LBL or Black Label but whatever it is, they make a great product for the Cross and it really completes it as a general purpose rifle.

      Inside of 250, the Steyr is hand's down more handy. If limited to that range, I'd chose the Steyr. It is only when you start expecting longer range performance without destroying handiness that the Sig comes into play.

    Well…. I guess it comes down to what you want to use it for. The over travel issue is the only one I have a problem with though a bit more leverage on the mag release would be better. The bolt knob doesn’t bother me. Welder/ machinist hands. As a hunting rifle for my area it’s great as is. A really long shot around here is maybe 100yds with a few exceptions.

    Appreciate your input and discussions on Scout Rifles and their use, sensible n' good information. Both excellent cartridges and both have their place. Yes, 6.5 Creedmoor will shade the .308 beyond 800 yards. Might ask yourself: "Is that a requirement I really need a Scout Rifle to deliver?" Target or fun plinking out to lonnng distances, 800 and beyond, is asking a standard Scout Rifle to stretch beyond what it was designed to do. Nothing wrong with that, but if planning on 800 and beyond, I'd select a more specific tailored rifle for such precision performance. Which of course is fine, as then I'd have 2 rifles!!!! Further, aside from having a few cases of mil surplus 7.62x51mm, the use of .30 caliber cast bullets/handloads lends another avenue for plinking or woods foraging with my .308 Scout Rifle, extending it's utility into a small game gathering iron. Do not misunderstand here, I am a big fan of 6.5mm, using 4 Mannlicher-Schoenauer Model 1903 6.5x54mm carbines. As long as we're slinging lead, what's not to like!!

    • @cliffy109
      @cliffy109 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You are absolutely correct that this is not a great method for having the fastest draw stroke. It is a HUGE compromise. A strong side OWB is far superior for that. However, you seem to have missed the point that there are people who prioritize absolute concealment over everything else and for those people, this is a really good choice. In non-permissive settings, the choice is often between a compromised firing stroke or not carrying at all. Given that choice, one should use what they can. Good training should back that up.

    Hi Steve, thanks for the good objective video, as usual. I’m touching base to see if you’d still buy the same scope for your Sig Cross? I’m looking for a scope for a POF Revolution gas gun and am considering you vortex 3-18x. Its a very lightweight 308 and I really like that range of magnification for this special purpose rifle. Thanks!

    • @cliffy109
      @cliffy109 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Strike Eagle 3-18 is good. It isn't great. Sometimes, I found the image to just not be as crisp as I wanted, especially at the higher magnifiactions. It isn't horrible and for the money, still a very good choice. I now have the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18X52 with the illumiated PR1 reticle. The difference is stunning.

    • @735Secure
      @735Secure หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the insight. I’ve never been a fan of Vortex scopes, even their high-end models, due to their reputation for reliability issues-I don’t own a single one. My most recent purchase was a Trijicon Tenmile 4.5-30x56 with an illuminated Christmas tree reticle. The glass is excellent-probably not quite Zeiss or Swarovski level, but still very impressive. I love it. Like all Trijicons, it’s built like a tank, but it weighs 3 lbs! For this application, I’m looking for a lightweight DMR scope suitable for emergencies but likely will never see the light of an emergency and will primarily be used for class and for range use. I’d prefer a lightweight option. I’m seriously considering the Leupold MK4 with the PR2 (Christmas tree) reticle, but it’s unfortunately non-illuminated, and ideally, I’d like a scope that goes down to 3x. Another option I’m considering is the Trijicon Tenmile 3-18x44 with an illuminated Christmas tree reticle, which comes in under 2 lbs. Did you consider that model? Also, did the 18x top-end present any challenges during the 1K-yard training class you took? I’m based in VA and am thinking of taking the same class you recommended. Appreciate your help!

    • @735Secure
      @735Secure หลายเดือนก่อน

      @ in the current configuration, the stock semiauto 308 rifle is 7Lbs, with the after market Luth-AR stock it is 8 Lbs, another 3+ lbs for the current Trijicon puts it at 11+ Lbs and with the suppressor, about 11.8 Lbs. and that doesn’t include a tripod. A bit too much. With a 2 Lb scope I can shave 1 Lb off of it, but I’m not sure it’s worth the compromise. Any thoughts?

    • @cliffy109
      @cliffy109 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@735Secure Based on MANY people's suggestion I have looked at the 3-18 Trijicon but look at the total elevation available. It is only 17.45 mils. Even with a 20 MOA base, that's barely enough for real long range shots. Then you're at the extremes of the adjustment range as well. As for 18X, I find it works just fine out to 1000 and really even 1200. I haven't shot enough beyond that to say how that works but at the Bangsteel range, it is adequate.

    • @cliffy109
      @cliffy109 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@735Secure As I mentioned, the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-18X52 is 28 ounces but right now, there are not really lightweight choices for a good crossover scope. One thing I can suggest is a really good Vicker's style sling which makes carrying the extra weight a lot more pleasant.

    I was tempted to bail when you started making SIG's excuses for them. The safety's behavior is inconsistent and may manifest over time. That's a bug, not a feature. On the bolt knob and the trigger, I agree with you. The mag release is a mixed bag: it may be an irritation over the course of a practical rifle class, but it protects against accidental release in the field. I'll go with the latter, myself.

    I have a Ruger 10/22 Sporter and was looking for 1” slings as the Sporter comes with factory 1” swivels. While I can replace them, the model I have is a 75th anniversary edition and want to keep it as stock as possible but still add some upgrades (BX trigger and Ruger extended mag release for example). There aren’t many 1” slings without sewn-in hardware. I came across your video before I even knew that the swivels were 1”, and happened to come BACK to your video while continuing my research. I really like the Magpul RLS sling as it’s lightweight and can be used in a manner similar to a Rhodesian or 1907, but it’s only available in 1-¼”. There are the observations of not a hunter, just a paper target slayer. For some reason very few creators in the community have the courage to be fully honest about the products they review. Greetings from Germany. This week I shot for the first time military historic rifle competition prone with the hasty sling. The tension from the sling made the position much more stable. I kind of leaned into the tension. I did not push the rifle up with my hand as you have shown. Also, the fact that the sling is attached to the side and not the bottom of the stock made a negative tilting impact (rules don't allow changing the rifle setup or using any other then the original sling). I didn't compare standing position with the hasty sling (which is also not allowed by our rules), but prone it definitely makes a difference to me.

You can learn "intuitive" wind calls, which is the best way to judge the wind. It's true that wind conditions at long range can be different than they are at the firing line, normally the first wind call is going to be based on what the wind is doing at the shooter's position, that is, if no evidence of a switch of direction can be seen in the scope. A really good budget practice .22lr is the Savage Mk II FV-SR ... it's got a threaded muzzle, mid weight barrel, and sells for around 250 to 270 dollars.

    What would be the practical value of a 308 at 1000 yds? Seems like a purely academic exercise. What am I missing?

      What practical value? If by practical, you mean hunting, then not a lot, although if you're proficient at 1000, you're probably pretty good at 500. I like to think "practical" includes any number of 2A scenarios that includes defense of country and constitution. For that, the ability to engage a target beyond the range where that target can fight back seems self-evident.
