Frank Miller's great influence was all over comics when I first started reading comics and I will always secretly wish comics were more like that.
Happy Christmas to you and your family Chuck. Thanks for the videos this year and wishing you all the best for the new year. Love from across the pond in the UK
I have a legitimate question that has bugged me for decades. Just reading through the first Birds of Prey with you and Gary Frank, now how does a project come about? There was no call for wanting a book for those characters at the time until you made it, did you go to DC to make it or were you approached to do it? Please clarify for one of your fans. BTW I think you and Mark Waid were the reason why I’m such a DC person now.
The garrot scene that really stuck in my head forever was more recent. The sequel to Talented Mr. Ripley, Ripley’s Game.
The first issue of a Batman I ever bought (started reading comics when I was 34) was Detective 700. I now have all 3 volumes of Knightfall, but I have not read them yet. I have read Contagion and Legacy, though, and enjoyed them enough to read again after Knightfall. First, I need to finish the Nightwing Omnibus.
I love my Steranko cover of Airboy 51. Still haven’t ever read an issue of Airboy, but I had to have that.
I had this album as a kid in the mid 60s. Total crack up. Very funny man.
Merry Christmas, Chuck!🎄
Hey there chuck . I noticed that although i spend alot of time thinking about my stories, plot points, characters, modify parts of it in my brain etc I'm not actually writing it all that often. When i commit the story to the page it's mostly fully formed but i wonder should i be writing more? Does the thinking count as writing? How do you do your writing ?and how often is it thinking about writing ?😁
In what comic does the Actuary debut?
I fondly remember Gearhead from The Batman cartoon of the 2000s. If I recall correctly, that was a key episode where the Batmobile was upgraded. No idea he was a Dixon original
I don't care for the "Showcase Presents" B/W reprints of color comics. I think books like Metal Men and Metamorpho, and even Justice League, lose something when all those bright colors are gone. It probably doesn't affect war and western comics as much. But I would guess that it's not so much the reprinting as the fact that they would RECOLOR all of them to print them, and thus have to pay someone to recolor those old books. (I'd be fine with it looking like my 1982 comics are bound as-is, but modern readers probably appreciate the better colors.)
Superhero comics generally need thought balloons for several reasons. The main ones are it helps you bond with the characters and it helps the writer understand the characters. Also, the US uses lower page counts than manga, American creators are not skilled enough, and solo superhero books generally are about loners. It's a big advantage of comics, so why not use them??? Manga should use them more. Manga digests almost feel like adaptations of animation instead of the reverse. Narration boxes are dry and destroy immersion. I soured on narration boxes with Brubaker who uses them as a crutch. Miller was one of the few who wrote good boxes, and he used how they are alienating. I refuse to read any more superhero comics without thought balloons. While not using thought balloons was interesting at first, and comics needed to advance, I think their loss severely damaged the genre. It's very refreshing to read Bronze Age superhero comics. (Chuck forgot to mention how Hama didn't use thought balloons, though that was after Miller began. It worked for G.I. Joe which has mystery characters and is more of a plot based group series. There is at least one early issue not written by Hama. It may be the only one with balloons.) I agree about the "Hero's Journey". Hollywood uses this to make lame characters, and it's been extremely overused. I tried to watch the new Snake Eyes movie, but it's atrocious. Part of this is because of the HJ framework. I like Storm Shadow in it. He's the only highlight. That actor is great, and he is a far more compelling character than fake, HJ Snake Eyes. The movie should have been about him. I kind of liked the colorized Akiras, but the original monochromes are much better. They have more impact and flow better. Superhero comics should be in color, even if it's bad color. A good finale for Punisher is he kills someone who is far more important than he thought who is connected to a vast global conspiracy. This sends nation states after him. (I would end Punisher by having him retire to raise the orphaned child of a cartel member.) I like his police friend in the Lundgren movie. That scene where he confronts Castle is great. (War Machine Punisher is a sweet idea.) Black Dahlia is a nuts novel. I liked it and couldn't stop reading it, but it's excessive. (For some reason, I brain dumped the movie.). LA Confidential is an awesome movie. I didn't read the novel though. Adam Warlock is a cool character. I liked his cerebral vibe. They should have ended the Spider-Man marriage by having MJ sacrifice herself for him after he decides to leave her to protect her. (They ended the baby anyway.) (Even if the hero doesn't succeed, his story should have some meaning.)
Shotgun first appeared in Daredevil by Nocenti and Romita Jr. in 1989. I remember him. DD had several new villains during that run.
Al Milgrom wrote a great love story between Peter Parker and Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) in Spectacular Spider-Man way back in the early 80s. Their relationship was fleshed out perfectly back then.
Bill Mantlo was the writer,Milgrom was doing the pencils on that run and indeed it was very solid.
Merry Christmas Chuck. Thanks for the great vids and comics.
Brandon Woodall; I wouldn’t worry too much either. Remember “Raiders of the Lost Ark”! That was essentially the same thing. Once the Ark was found it was revealed that no one could ever have used it for nefarious purposes. So Indy himself was essentially just entertainment. And Star Trek 5 with “What does God need with a Starship?”. Oh wait. Never mind about that one….
Brandon Woodall. My two cents on your story is that evil ultimately fails because it must so your story easily works if you have that theme in place. God/goodness is eternally triumphant. Good luck.
Moon Wing? The obvious mix was Night Knight. 😊
My personal opinion is that the most well rounded comics in the crowdfunding/super Indy sphere are Compass Comics. Art, story, production value, timeliness they do everything very well. You will get 3 acts in every book while other publishers linger on act 1 seemingly forever. Graham Nolan’s books are destination reading for me.
Graham and Aaron Lopresti are the best!
I think there should be a caveat that you don’t have to worry about the Hero’s Journey or the history of mythology if you can write as well as Chuck. But for beginners, I think that historical context for what worked traditionally can provide a template until you’re confident enough to veer off on your own. So long as you consider it as a suggestion and not a rigid set of rules
Yeah, I think that's what a lot of people don't understand about the hero's journey. Many assume Joseph Campbell was saying all stories are exactly like that, when he was, in fact, saying there is a type of story that is universal across various cultures throughout the history of the world. It's just one of many stories in a culture's mythology. And there's other character arcs with their own templates that this could apply to, such as the heroine's journey, the anti-hero's journey, or the villain's fall, to name a few.
I miss thought bubbles
In that run of Punisher Frank got the actual War Machine armor (Rhodey was temporarily dead) from Nick Fury Jr. and he was supposed to clean up a SHIELD mess in some fictional eastern European country. Frank managed to break it quickly and spent most of the arc out of the armor and trying to fix it. He eventually completes the mission and comes back to NY, causing havoc until the Avengers chase him down and a freshly resurrected Rhodey convinces him to hand over the armor.
Joseph Campbell just analyzed a pattern across cultural mythology. It's a functional template for storytelling, but clearly not the only way. "There's more than one way to skin a cat" as my grandfather would say.
My question is, why would your grandpa know how to skin a cat and what for?
@AceLM92 Y'know, he would never give me a straight answer...
@@Punished_SSP_Garrett guess he kept trade secrets in the trade
Fun vid as usual. James Elroy is really one of the masters of dialogue, that's why his books are so easy to translate into movies, the script is written already from characters interacting on the page. Have a Merry Christmas!
Floppies are not dead, they just went underground, where the best stuff was, is, and always will be.
I think many people don't like Namor because they're predisposed to not like "Aquaman" characters, so they just don't give either character a chance.
Well said, Chuck. I’m glad to be a part of your audience. I’ve learned a lot and I remain inspired 🙏🏻
What you said about Frank Miller goes for Alan Moore. Both are great creative minds, but they didn't create everything.
Not being able to see who's talking is a real turnoff. I'd watch if it wasn't just a disembodied voice.
I feel kind of bad for Marvel and DC comics now. I have been burned by them so much that I can’t spend the 5 dollars per issue to get disappointed again. The 2017(I think) spider 2099 series by Peter David was good and so was Dan slot’s Superior Spider-Man. Other than that I wait till they are at least 2 dollars before I try a new marvel or DC comic. Also John layman’s Batman run was good.
Scholastic sells 5 or 6 times as many comics per month as DC and Marvel combined, and it's been that way for probably close to two decades, so it's not like DC and Marvel haven't had ample time to adjust to the changing tastes of the market.
There is a Popeye horror thriller movie coming
Really wish you would reconsider comic cons for Lexington, Kentucky or Tampa, Florida
Wow - you promoted Anti-White Kalergi Plan stuff way back then, did you? The Day of the Pillow is upon you boomer
Hi Mr Dixon, I checked out Jean Shepherd radio shows as you have mentioned in this episode. The first one I saw was the Christmas Eve 1971. Very interesting. The way a company celebrated Christmas back then was quite different from nowadays for sure.
Are you broadcasting the later episodes of ACD from a helicopter? I keep hearing a whirling sound in the background. Kinda like a turbo prop sound.
Hey Check, both Marvel and D.C. Comics need you back writing their flagship titles. It's you and the other classic comic book creators that continue to be the lifeblood of the comic book industry. There's only a handful of good new comic book creators now. Most of the writers nowadays could use a crash course on how to like comic books in order to become truly better comic book writers. I hopefully we are finally seeing the end of wokeness in all of the comic books.
wow - we went deep on this one - i feel your pain on the batman....
Thanks for answering my question, Chuck. I'm a fan of Miller, but it does bug me how a lot of people always seem to give him credit for stuff he didn't invent, just popularized
I would argue that it is immoral for Gotham not to kill the Joker. They have him in custody, they have evidence of his crimes, they have prosecutors and courts and an obligation to protect the public Batman is a volunteer operating on his own dime and under no obligation to end the Joker. That is the proper duty of the state.
I've always said this. At what point does a judge not rule to put him down? How many federal felonies had he not committed? Batman is not strictly a vigilante, but almost a liaison for the police to work with..
"The Long Ride Home" *still* a big fav after all these years and so many great yarns! Those Savage Tales stories are little Dixon gems.
Leaving the newsstand was the worst decision the comic industry ever made. In order to have a thriving direct market, you need a thriving general market that brings new readers in. Plus it took all the risk OFF of publishers. Comic stores can't send back unsold copies. They take the hit. The comic industry needs to put comics back in convenience stores. They're the only brick and mortar stores that are still growing and are completely unaffected by digital shopping. Everyone goes into convenience stores. And the risk will be back on the publisher, so they'll have to put out good content.
Chuck Dixon: the man who doesn't care about your political affiliations, but if he sees you get a comics history fact wrong will make a video to dispute what you said on an entirely different website than you mentioned it on.🤣
Waid is a nutjob but like Allen Moore, a TALENTED nutjob.
Agreed, though he's neither quite as talented nor as nutty as Moore.
I tend to think of Batman as a really committed volunteer type. He doesn't HAVE to do what he does, but he does it because he had a traumatic experience as a child and he doesn't want anyone else to have to go through that, and he objects to certain things in Gotham City and doesn't trust how stuff is run, so he puts on his costume and goes out to see if anyone needs help. He's absolutely not crazy or strange, he just lives in a heightened reality where doing something like that is a workable pastime.
I'm honestly surprised there's a HORSEMAN 2 coming. The comic seemed deliberately written to be a throwaway -- kind of like the end (or even midpoint) of a TV series where the writers said, "Okay, we can be canceled here, and the viewers shouldn't have much to complain about because we wrapped things up nicely." (You even wrapped up too much where one of your characters was concerned.) Likewise, many characters felt underdeveloped, as if you were following Jon Del Arroz's principle, "Don't invest too much in your first issue in case there isn't a second." (That's one reason I wasn't fond of HORSEMAN -- I kept wanting it to go deep, and it stubbornly refused.)
Mike, you thought The Last Jedi was a good film. You never explained to me why the Heros abandoning the enslaved children at the Casino was justified, even tho they had time to save the animals.
@garfieldsbizarreadventure5758 The animals could fend for themselves in the wild. Children not so much.
@garfieldsbizarreadventure5758 And how come you didn't see me on Eric's livestream yesterday? Am I blocked on his channel? I couldn't even post a SuperChat!
@@MichaelJPartyka Lol, so let the enslaved children suffer.

Is Elon Musk Batman without the costume?
I see Musk as more Tony Stark without the armor.
Looks like I'm buying some AW Hart Westerns in the near future. Your response to the X-Men question made me laugh. Thanks for responding, Chuck!
Re: Plateau Marketing - brilliant! Stan was onto something back in the day. The big two should have continued with this strategy. If they had, I think comics would be in a lot better shape today than they are.
The equivalent of “thought balloons” is used in novels all the time. Never had a problem with it.
That's a good point.
