I spend most of my year as the multi-instrumentalist for Brit Floyd (woodwinds, guitars, basses, percussion, keyboards) but I play other instruments too! I record a lot of music that ends up in TV, Advertisements, Broadway, and other areas. Follow along for insights on what it’s like to be a touring musician and a studio musician while I navigate new and exciting parts of the music industry. You might find some new music, transcriptions, and also some gear reviews.
Fodera Emperor Deluxe (Custom) 5 String Bass
This is my favorite bass I've ever owned: a custom Fodera Emperor Deluxe 5 String. When I'm recording, this is the bass that I pick up the most. I've played some gigs with it too, where it has performed wonderfully.
This bass has a roasted Ash body, light flamed Koa top, 3pc maple neck, Macassar Ebony fingerboard, and is outfitted with the Fodera/Duncan Dual Coils and the custom preamp with the 3 band EQ. Fodera Newborn Gallery Link: fodera.com/pages/emperor-photo-gallery#emperor-deluxe-e54904d
About the sound examples: These sounds were recorded direct, into a Focusrite Clarett with minimal processing. I did this in order to present what I think is the most uncolored tone of the instrument. For those that are going to ask: These strings are Elixir Nanowebs, Nickel, 45-130 and they were a year and two months old at the time of recording.

These are my DW Jazz Series Bop Drums in the following specs: 6x14 Snare, 8x12 Tom, 14x14 Floor Tom, 14x18 Kick. I purchased them with the idea of having a really great jazz kit to record on. Great bass. But im not yet ready to sell my kidney yet lol.
This is definitely a difficult thing: They are majorly expensive. For me as a working pro, this felt like an expense that I became ok with over time. I have to say too: I haven't looked at another bass to purchase since getting this one!
@RyanSaranich Listen I have a very good friend who played with the Florida Suncoast Orchestra as a 1st chair Bass Violinist and the cost of his instrument was almost $80,000 Dollars

Oh, very cool. I've got alder on my P build, and really enjoyed the sounds- but I wish it were roasted. Regardless, those guys have a sense for picking great pieces of wood! What's your top wood?

Love my monarch classic P. I own vintage and custom shop Precision basses. The playability and construction is what I like. Yes it’s expensive, worth it in my opinion.
With you there! Lots of good P basses in all price ranges, but this one is the one for me.

Jazz Series is far and away my favorite kit DW make, and your kit sounds great!

On all three settings it's great, but when the tone is up full, that tone is gorgeous. It sounds like there's a bit of grit on it, but that must be the setup and how you dig in. Stunning tone.

Sadly, not inspired by Scott Devine, although I feel like this is something I have been going for in my setups for years. I dig that (very) slightly gritty sound.

Creating your ideas on to manuscript paper and maybe not being able to play what you’ve written is crazy to think that but being able to grow as a phenomenal musician you’re challenge yourself to play is so inspiring. You say ‘my writing in my head sometimes out plays my hands as a player’ is inspiring to know that you’re pushing and learning to become even more outstanding. Interested in your musical interpretation on sounds in the city. When it rains here in Toledo, I always listen to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Do you hear in color and does that translate into your musical notation at all?
I think of a lot of city sounds in stereo- kind of multi-dimensional. I hope this gets portrayed in my mix so that it feels that way, too. I do not hear in color, although I've spent time around people who do. It's really fascinating!
