The last few days have been rough for me but I got out and caught some shrimp. I'll share basic tips and techniques for locating, catching, and preparing the shrimp to eat.

Do you have a recreational saltwater hook and line fishing license?
Yes . But I do believe there's a cast net license that you can buy as well. Not sure if you need it for the shrimp.@SouthernFishNForage
@JoeHasGotToGo you only need the cast net license of you DON'T have a regular fishing license. Straight from the Virginia DWR website: "Description: To fish in saltwater with one cast net. Use of a cast net is allowed by SW recreational H&L licensees without buying an additional license. This cast net license should only be bought by individuals that do not hold or intend to buy a SW H&L license."
When was this, recent? I’ve heard of shrimp in the bay and creeks but never seen them.
Right now through November is the best time to find them!

Had a coworker give me some crappie fillets last week and I fried them up. DAMN they were good. Probably haven’t eaten crappie in 40 years. What river you fishing?
@JoeHasGotToGo this was the chickahominy river below the dam. An excellent fishery for crappie!
@@SouthernFishNForage ha!! Those crappie I ate last week came from the Chick. Not sure if it was the lake or river. Good size fillets. Back in the 80s I fished off the dam for crappie with dad. Probably the last time I crappie fished. Still have locks on that dam?
Something I've noticed is that below the dam the crappie seem to have worms. I stopped keeping them from the tidal portion of the river, above the dam seem ok.
"I caught these crabs last night" (jumpcut to crab snatching) made me giggle. A brilliant video as always, seeing you on my feed always brightens my day. The curry looks delicious too!

I am about 15 minutes from there. You should try the Lake on the end. Crane Lake. You can catch all the saltwater species in there due to chuckatuck creek flowing in it

@Daniel-kl7sj haven't made it that far north yet! Had to google that river haha. I do fish some rivers further north, rappahanock, etc, and the trout fishing is definitely heating up!

@@SouthernFishNForage I'm up in Ontario Canada, so there's certainly no shortage of lakes and rivers and creeks. I just need to figure out a few things like education before i can move out of the city and buy a rural property.

Awesome fishing! I like how you are being stealthy when fishing shallow water: gently putting down the net and fish on the boat deck, quietly releasing the fish back into the water, closing reel bail using your hand instead of clacking by using the reel handle, talking quietly while catching the fish, etc. Great job!

@villagermike208 Oyster toads are fine to eat, toadfish aka pufferfish can be toxic if prepared incorrectly.

Ginseng is something that has caught my interest, but I've never harvested it!
how many days after the hurricane did you go picking?
The day after, for about 3 days. I believe this was two days after Debbies effects on my area.
