I woukd have been in absolute bliss had there been an witchy Mr. Rogers back in my childhood 😊
I had been debating with myself for years on whether or not to buy Judika Illes book, 5000 Spells. I finally did after watching your video and I'm so glad I took the plunge. I have her Encyclopedia of Magic book and love it as well. She is such a good writer and skilled researcher. These are the sort of books you buy and leave for the next generations so that they are not lost in time.
I'm a big fan of your podcast as well I'm super excited that I found it,
I just got your book, and woooooow , good job Cory thank you so much for such an amazing full of information and goodies,, as a solo practitioner of 6 years, I reside in a very small town in the Bible belt, North Carolina, not many practitioners around, there is a very well-known practitioner Byron billiards, she has a few books as well, it's been hard for me to find a really good folk Magic based book, I have backwards witchcraft doctoring the devil local author, those are great books as well, any how I greatly appreciate your book, ty
I want to find more on Ontario Canada folklore and the St Lawrence Valley region
Good info! I'm a native Ozarkian and I'm writing a fantasy book based here and needed some info! Thanks!
Cool episode
1:09:00 Eight is a significant number in music: the notes in a scale are in a group of eight, called an octave. In an octave, the first note and the eighth have the same name, just the first is low and eighth is high. You could say that the musical octave has symbolism of increasing the energy of something. A low C note transforms to a high C note when you play the ascending C scale.
25:22 When I was at school, and we were playing a chasing game like Tag (which we called 'It' because the person who was chasing was called 'It') we could cross our fingers and say 'paxies'. This would mean we couldn't be tagged. I assume 'paxies' (pronounced 'pack-seas') was a corruption of the Latin "pax" meaning 'peace' or 'truce'.
Magyarul tanulok! My husband was born in Budapest and we’re planning a strip in two years. I’ve learned a lot in a short amount of time having a live in tutor. I’d definitely be at a disadvantage in the middle of Budapest, though😂
Always a good day when there is a upload on this channel. Had no idea a new book was coming out... just ordered my copy on Amazon, can't wait to read it! Update: it is highly disappointing.... NWW was infinitely better. Not worth $35 CAD.
Thank you for sharing this. It's funny... I just started a commonplace book today for my Spiritual journey and then this video came up on my TH-cam. You helped the process to make more sense. I will definitely keep jotting down what I find interesting and what I want to learn in Witchcraft. I hope to have quite the collection of books one day.
I thought Voodoo and Hoodoo were closed?
Favourite podcast by far! and Patreon was actually worth it lol Please don't ever stop uploading these 🙏
Could you possibly do an episode discussing the Houzle/red meal?
This has been a favorite podcast of mine for years now. 🖤 Love you fam!
Commenting from 1:34 in: I am finding the background music very distracting, as it is too loud compared to the voice! Please have mercy on those of us with ADHD and other focus challenges! Commenting from the finish: eventually it got somewhat better, or my focus was able to zoom in. Very interesting! I had never heard the mariner story, or those ending tips for endeavors that benefit from an eclipse!
Thank you for letting me know! I will definitely try to lower the volume even further in the future on any music!
Hi there, just wanted to say you’ve been a massive help in focusing my craft and my abilities. Love your book and podcast so much (much love to Laine as well)! I dipped my toe into this side of spirituality several times throughout my life and, honestly, if I had found you and Laine the first time around, I wouldn’t have had to come back to it later over feeling confined with things like Wicca (as that’s all I got my hands on at the time). You’re both amazing teachers and I’m truly grateful for your help.
Thankyou for making this book manifest Cory , my copy is in witch flight winging its way to me now 🙏🕯
Good video but I was laughing because I just kept thinking you’re whispering because you’re living in your mom’s house still you don’t want her to hear you talking about it
Thanks to both of you for making this episode :) ( Not related to this episode but I'm rereading NWW by Cory and and it's just as fantastic as I remember. Thanks Mr. Hutcheson! )
3:54 book recommendations start
23:02 this one
I'm glad you recommended Owen Davies' Grimoires because that was the first book that popped into my head when you mentioned that his History of Witchcraft was very European centered.
I associate apples with good health. "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." I also associate apples with enjoying the simple pleasures in life. I keep a small bowl of dried apple slices by my front door, on my kitchen window sill, and on my altar. I've also hung dried slices in my window with red hemp cord. I incorporate dried slices into my art, like into door wreaths. Apples are a great ally. 🍎
Absolutely loved listening and learning from this interview!
Thank you for uploading 🖤
Hello could you make a video about the red string charms or which book to look for please?
Umm Adam and Eve was the first thing to pop up in my mind!!
Paddy slades book is one of my favourites.
Gemma Gary notes that “It may perhaps be the Church, in its keenness to eradicate adherence to Pagan divinity by grafting and projecting it onto the diabolical, that has, unwittingly, most thoroughly preserved the potency, liberation and illumination of the “Old One’ and handed him back to the Witches as the ‘Devil’.”
Priests and Christian Theologians label any deity other than their One God as "The Devil", so for Christians Pan, Herne, Cernunnos etc, are mixed together as "The Devil".
Keep up the good work from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺 👏 👍
I thoroughly enjoyed this. You’re an Excellent Teacher, Very Engaging!! TY
Where do you find regional almanacs? All the ones I find are very general
The Devil of folklore in Spain is very similar to that of other areas of Europe, it's consistent. Too long to explain but He is for instance a figure appearing in some old Carnivals (very ancient rituals in the guise of folkloric dances or theatrical displays, the "Carnaval de Bielsa" is a good example) where horned beasts end up being appeased by a pretty virginal woman who symbolises spring, for instance. We have tales of people helped by the Devil or tricked by him, or he being tricked by a human. There's these two aspects: the formidable entity you can't outsmart, ancient, wise, powerful, fearsome, linked to Nature, storms, death, fertility, and the trickster figure that you can make fun of, so to say. I know that the Devil is very real, an entity that is part of this World. Many people can't handle that He might be real , it shatters their world, so to say, the scientific base on what our modern civilization is based. People love safety, rules, and stability. They fear the unknown, they panic if they don't know what to expect and the logic behind things is not quite "rational".
Gotta be diplomatic and cater to the simpletons.
Not me clicking this because of Bill Cipher.
this is fascinating thank you
I've just started looking at the traditions that the people I grew up with did in the light of folk magic rather then just quirks and it's fascinating. We had people who would buy your warts and people who would sing to trees etc etc..and all of this just went right over my head as a child. Now I'm blown away by how much work these people were putting into keeping our community safe and happy. I wish I had paid more attention and had some of these old folks to talk to because it's just wild to me that this whole culture was right there in my town being done all around me and I just didn't know it as that. All I knew was this is how we do things but no reason for why.
I bought my copy from a shop called The Speaking Tree in Glastonbury England
I think you made it very clear! There is more than one path and people need to remember that when reading a book BUT you stated that in your book.
I like to use rial road spikes to sort of anchor myself when I'm going to spirit flight, so that nothing snatched me preventing me from waking up.
I can't wait to see the regional videos. I love folklore (and myth and legend) from a historical and storytelling perspective. When you type "North American folklore' into Amazon or Goodreads or what have you, thousands of books show up and there's no way to know easily which ones are worthwhile. I find videos like yours invaluable to help me find ones that have real depth and insight and not just the same basics you can find anywhere.
Great list of books and I have some that you mentioned. I am in Canada and find myself buying books from Gemma Gary and so on. Thanks for sharing
As a beekeeper in the Ozarks, I have driven to a fellow beekeeper's house to tell them her father died while she was away. They are beautiful creatures that always keep your secrets. It is a peaceful hobby, you don't seem to have a lot of people just standing around in the way.
Great introduction. But I think the episode is not complete. It cuts abruptly in the end.
I just bought your book N.W.W and so far it's fantastic! I absolutely adore the fact that you give book recommendations for certain subjects , and I just wanted to say Thank you!
Excellent! I've got Randolph's book but could tell from the jump that it wouldn't be complete. I'm excited to check out Weston's book for a more detailed picture. Eagerly awaiting your latest work as well! I'm going to give several copies of it as gifts, too.
Cory, great video! I'm a huge fan of your podcast and writing. Native Ozarker here and I wanted to share seldom talked about history. The French, specifically Quebecois, had a huge influence on the Ozark region. St. Genevieve, Fort De Chartes and Kaskaskia were trading hubs between Canada, the Appalachians and New Orleans. Also, I love that you brought up the Pawpa tree. There is a specific dialect of French that was spoken in the southern Missouri Ozarks called Papaw French. It sounds a bit Cajun when heard. Sadly the language is dying. It was still the primary language spoken in certain isolated Ozark areas even into the 1960s. I have roots in these communities and have done some research and found that several Canadian folk stories survived into these communities. They've evolved to include or be replaced with regional animals, etc. There is a musician and Folklorist, Dennis Stoughmatt who speaks fluent Pawpaw French and is an encyclopedia of French folklore of the region. He has videos on TH-cam. Thanks so much for this video! You are spot on with your Ozark history and folk knowledge. Definitely lots of Scots Irish. I have plenty of those ancestors too. There are many around here descended from migrated Appalachians. Thank you for all the work you do! Great video!
Oh! Thank you for the tip on the French influences! I will definitely be looking more into that. I really appreciate the insider's view on that aspect of the Ozarks, too!
